R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. One of the first alternative rock bands, R.E.M. was noted for Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style, Stipe's distinctive vocal quality and obscure lyrics, Mills's melodic basslines and backing vocals, and Berry's tight, economical style of drumming. R.E.M. released its first single-"Radio Free Europe"-in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the group released its critically acclaimed debut album, Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio. Following years of underground success, R.E.M. achieved a mainstream hit in 1987 with the single "The One I Love". The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to espouse political and environmental concerns while playing large arenas worldwide. - Zábava
"Cement truck?? C'MON!!" OK, I officially love this guy already.
A truly wonderful band with a superb back catalogue of music. To just call them songs is doing them a disservice. Stipe, Buck, Mills & Berry.
Cliff Burton loved this band.
Back then 86 rem, they were just getting going and cliffs girlfriend at the time was gonna see them in CA on Sept 26 1986 cliffs last day he couldn't wait to talk to his girlfriend about how the show went. Anyhow they ended up cancelling cause of rain and they didn't want to get electrocuted.... cliff never got a chance to talk with her again he died not long after they spoke...sad. But yeah cliff loved REM. nobody in there area liked them but cliff turned the other guys onto them they might of been a band before metallica but in 86 they still had awhile to go
Arron P. Awesome.. Remember seeing Metallica at Monsters of Rock in 86 at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. One of Cliffs last shows. Also from Athens & saw R.E.M. before Murmer came out. Those were the days when the music scene was booming in Athens
It was cool and funky...awesome Scott. Love REM and I learn something new every time you do videos on great bands! Thanks!!!
Wow, just Wow! Glad I found Scott on Tape and your R.E.M. tours!
So freaking awesome!! I had a feeling an REM video was coming from some of the clues in the last live stream. What a great video about a really great band.
GREAT VIDEO, Scott.
I love REM! Ever since High School! So many great memories. Document was huge for me. Also, Out of Time was the soundtrack of 1991, and falling in love. Thank you for your videos, Scott!
Thank you for watching Mary!
I love REM and have since I first saw them on MTV! Losing My Religion is still a favorite song. These locations are very cool. I always heard they were from a college town but never knew where they were from! So thank you for showing me!
You’re welcome my sweet Jana! It’s why I’m always taking about Athens on the live chats haha. I love it there. I really hope I get to go back this year.

Amazing video. Thank you! super cool stuff! It's just incredible to see the actual locations that I read about and was fascinated with in high school and beyond. R.E.M. is like my American Beatles - they just rocked my world and still do. What an incredible body of music.I briefly lived in South Carolina and drove to Athens twice and loved it, but I didn't take any video. Great to see these locations again!
Hey, I'm a R.E.M. fan since 1994 and I'm from Germany. This was so awesome to watch. Thank you so much for this! :) I imagined Athens to be much more sleepy, but this looks quite busy and loud.
I love how a band who has a song called Losing My Religion is affiliated with a place that has a steeple... LOL! This was cool Scott... As usual... Take it easy and see you later!
Losing My Religion is an old fashioned way to express that you are on your last nerve. ❤

Great video, Scott! You missed my favorite song as you listed a bunch. Everybody hurts!!!! Although, you know how there are certain songs that carry such meaning for you? That's one of mine, if you see 👀👀 me watching the video, best to head in the other direction. Despite that, it's still an amazing song!!
Very cool!

I played 40 Watt a couple times, Caledonia. Globe is owned by Stipe.
It so sad rem broke up. They were a good band.
Hey Scott when are you coming to Tx?
I would be in 7th heaven in Wuxtry Record's. Never got into R.E.M myself, but this was a kick ass video sweetie. And I'll put air in your tires anytime! Peace...
The church where they played their very 1st gig in '80 is gone I believe. last time I was there was 2004. All that was left then was the steeple. And 15 min in it's still there! yes! I took a pic of it,but lost it like a dummy, Is Lo yo yo stuff still there? It's the record store right next to the 40 watt.
"I'm not giving out the address" /stands next to Chick Music, which will surely be on Google Maps.
LMFAO you're a trip dude. :)
Olivia Newton John passed away August 8, 2022 how cancer .
Since they did a movie on queen and Elton John. They should do a movie on R.E.M😃
