    My Dad when he ran more, he got into the maximalist shoes and felt the Hoka shoes helped him run better and not overstride as even though the Hoka shoes most of the models are the weight of a men's average stability shoe size 9, at 11 ounces, the design is such that they keep him from overstriding or understriding due to physics of how the models move in the air for him.

      @@matsholvoet I also know of runners who run minimal just not super minimal with the vivabarefoot brand or one model of North Face/similar styles as they needed some grip and minimal cushioning. Though the North Face is better than most super minimal running shoes.

    I think the education around barefoot shoes and being barefoot in general is more important than the shoes themselves. If the way you move is bad, then you won't get the full benefits of barefoot shoes, and you could end up hurting yourself more. I overpronate, and I knew that if I stopped wearing supportive shoes, then all of my pain would come back. I learned what I needed to change on CZcams and I haven't worn supportive shoes in almost 5 months now. It's a long and tedious transition and I'm not nearly there yet, maybe around a year I'll be good, but it's been worth it. It seriously changed my life. If even walking in barefoot shoes is a challenge, then running in barefoot shoes should also be handled with extreme care. It's definitely not going to happen overnight, but with enough time and attention to detail, you could probably run as long as you want in barefoot shoes.

      Right it is like me, I can't race in the max cushion super shoes, if I had to get shoes other than the racing flats of several models of Asics GS Racers second to last or last model as well as one model of final DS Runners/Trainers as my racing model, I would be getting some of the Nike 5k/10k model in newest upper update for all road racing up to About 30--35 miles or 50k to 40k.

    Thanks for this discussion! One of the big problems for runners with barefoot shoes is if they don't correct the inefficient heel-striking gait that raised & cushioned heels habituate them to. Light heel-first landing is natural at slower or moderate walk, but not for faster walk or running.
    I would say, if a person wants some extra comfort & cushion for runs when they're pushing their limits a bit, don't go for a traditional shoe with tapered toe and lifted heel. There are natural foot-shaped, level shoes like Altra that have a couple models with more cushion.

    • @matsholvoet
      @matsholvoet  Před 5 měsíci

      Barefoot shoes def need a lot of getting used to. Some are nice to run in though like the altras. Thanks for the comment 🙏 do you often run in barefoot shoes?

    • @childcrone
      @childcrone Před 5 měsíci

      @@matsholvoet Not 'real' runs yet. I often throw in a few brief jogs on my walks, as the urge strikes and it feels good. I have been thinking for a while of starting into running. My walking habit has been sporadic, so consistency with that is what I'm working on now. I'm 62, so gonna take the time it takes.
      I've been on a learning journey into natural foot function and 'barefoot shoes' for 5-6 years and have no interest in working my feet in anything with a tapered toe or propped up heels & arches.

    I have incredibly flat feet. I lived with pain in my arches throughout my life. Until I discovered barefoot shoes and gave them a try.
    I now use barefoot shoes to do everything, except running, as I feel I'm not prepared yet. But I like running in Altras (zero drop, large toe space).

    Hey Mats, my 2 cents. It needs to be stressed that transitioning to barefoot shoes needs to be painfully slow, let alone running. Topic of running in barefoot shoes should be therefore differently approached. Also, any issues with running form have a bigger impact in barefoot shoes.

    • @matsholvoet
      @matsholvoet  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes i totally agree that it takes a very long time to grow strong feet.
      Don’t you think that running technique/form alters when running barefoot anyway?
      And do you run barefoot?

    • @ChristopheStrobbe
      @ChristopheStrobbe Před 6 měsíci

      How quickly you can transition to barefoot shoes depends on what you wore in the past. I went barefoot at home for many years before I came across barefoot shoes. I started wearing them for entire days from the start and never had any issues.
      However, I haven't used them for running yet. (For some time, I used the Nike Free Run for running short distances. It's not a real barefoot shoe because it has a 6mm drop and a narrow toebox but it has a very flexible sole, just like minimal shoes. I never had issues with that either.)

  • @caseysmith544
    @caseysmith544 Před 6 měsíci

    The one thing I wish most shoes did was have a more natural toe-box shape so when running I can splay my toes for better support but still with the standard shoe design, so not Altra or at least in that case I would have to glue in some heel cushioning, not a ton below the shoes sock liner and the heel cushion should be on the firmer side to be more like a cushion midsole. I like running on all surfaces in currently older model of Brooks Cascadia as a more firm midsole of a trail shoe though to a point along with the rock guard seems to work best for everyday. Then in Road Racing and speed work/running to the track shoes, old ASICS DS Racer 8 and a few backup 9 with the holes pre plugged with Shoe Goo. I might have to buy some cheap medium thickness insoles for the ASICS Gel DS Racer 9 and eventually use a pair of Gel DS Trainer 23 that is almost the same in weight as the lightly modified ASICS Gel DS Racer 8 are used as I find a classic racing flat type shoe works better for my running style then a super shoe. I mean if I ran in real Super shoes the Nike Streakfly is what I would get as I do not need all the cushioning of a thick sole super shoe but more then what New Balance does for a minimal racing flat super shoe made to race up to 5k only.

    • @matsholvoet
      @matsholvoet  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes a good trainer where we can splay our toes freely would be nice 😄 altra does make shoes with more cushioning but I don’t know if they still have the wide toe box since I haven’t tried em.
      If you found shoes you are happy running in then you have all you need 🤩
      (The max cushion super shoes do work for me in terms of speed)

    As @YawingBeard said, Barefoot shoes shouldn't just be swapped in for your regular runners. For me they are clearly a training tool, to get stronger and potentially reveal weaknesses. If I'm going for performance I want all the help I can get, in a race for example. Kinda like a weightlifting belt. To build my core I don't wear one in regular training, but if I'm going for a new PR I want the extra support.

    • @matsholvoet
      @matsholvoet  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes I totally agree. They can be a fantastic option but one to really build slowly. I like the resemblance you made with the running belt (should have put that in my video 😂)

      For some people the Minimal shoes or at least some kind of more built up cross country flat/no spikes that has some very minimal cushion with full rubber works for them as a daily running shoe. Just do not get the runners that wear only VivoBarefoot shoes to start talking about the company, they will never shut up about it, kind of how before the lawsuits the Five Finger Vibram people insisted these shoes or very similar five finger barefoot shoes were the only way to go to truly be barefoot.

      Me too! I didn't even know what plantar fasciitis was until it was too late! My cousin does ultras and really likes them (I don't think he does Ultras in Barefoot shoes though).
      I have flat, wide feet and I'm more muscular than my cousin, I tend to need the heel cushion and arch support or my entire body will be wrecked if I'm putting miles on my feet. Wide shoes and wide toe boxes are nice around town though.
      But I live in California, so I never fully bought into barefoot shoes when I already wear flip-flops half of the year. And I can buy 4 decent pairs for the price of most barefoot shoes people recommend.
