- John Denver singing Country Roads at the opening of Mountaineer Field September 6, 1980. This is the introduction and full song as recorded by WVAQ with Jack Fleming as announcer.

It literally took the personal efforts of Governor Rockefeller to get John Denver there to sing at the opening of the New Mountaineer field. He was out on tour, and he felt he could not fit it into the schedule. They sent a West Virgina State Helicopter to pick him up, set down next to the stadium, he sang an amazing rendition of the song in front 50+ thousand fans, waved to the crowd, and got back in the chopper and winged off to continue his tour. It was just an amazing thing to watch. I will never forget it!
+abner doubleday so lucky! must have been unforgettable
so talented so missed
abner doubleday you are so lucky to have been there, it must have been wonderful
Henry John Deutchendorf jr, you'll always be the best.....RIP
What did that cost the taxpayers? Notice the crowd booed Rockefeller. Deservingly so!
@@diosseacontigo8822 Because I'm so sure that you give a crap.
Dios Sea Contigo they are college students. It would be odd if they didn’t boo a politician introduced at a sporting event. It’s what college students do. It’s just part of life.
I love how John makes the crowd behave: "Be nice." Love it!
Yeah that part makes me chuckle, too. 😅
I was there. Sophomore in the first game at new Mountaineer Field. Sent chills down my spine. Still does.
***** Be nice! LOL
Markpc1 So was I, on the field with the marching band. John Denver was friendly to all the kids. Very cool. He'll certainly be missed.
so was I ...silk
I was in grad school at WVU then. I loved Jack Fleming's play calling too. He had a great football voice for the Steelers and WVU.
Ryan Comstock Nice job prick
As a Kentuckian I have always been jealous of WV's state song..damn its so powerful
Blasphemy brother, we have a good one. Think senior day at Rupp, and My old Ky Home. Minus the slavery reference that has been written out of course
Bro what? You guys host one of the most beloved national sporting events every year and you open it with your state song.
Care you and WV to join back to Virginia?
I'm from Louisiana. I'm doubly jealous, because of the song, and the fact that y'all both have beautiful mountains. Time for me to take some "Country Roads!"
@@lordsnivyofnottingham2948 Nah, we’re good but thank you for the invite to return to our roots.
I was a freshman....never, ever seen anything like it in my life! Flown in, hops out of helicopter...crowd GOES WILD! I won't soon forget my days at WVU and this being a huge highlight!

I was there that day being my first game to see when I was there from fall 1980 to Dec. 1985, receiving a BS in Forestry, Wood Science, and my MBA. Good Times!

Richard Jones why did they boo that governor?
@@ChrisLee-xq9le He was corrupt.
@@jamesbraun9842 makes perfect sense. Do you happen to know his name by chance?
I was there. Freshman and my first football game. Pretty damn cool.
I am alumni, same with my Daddy and Both my Grand parents and Great Grand Parents so We all sing this song all the time, Montani sempre libre
Theres something spiritual with this song, as much as a hymnal song.

I was there! I was a Freshman at WVU💙💛💙💛
I only wish someone would have taken an entire video of the event. Especially being so tragic to lose such a talent at such an early age.
@@mparks580 he didn’t die right after this
Mountaineers are the nicest people there is.
@PS 400 ...hmm...I've lived in WV my entire life and have never done meth or pills. I take an aspirin occasionally, but I don't love them. I'm guessing the state you're from has a sterling reputation?
@PS 400 ...a country is also a "state", so doesn't make a bit of difference does it?
Grew up in Central NY, moved to Maryland where I still reside. Landed a job that gives me WV as territory. Absolutely majestic from panhandle (song was written about that part of the state) to Ohio/Kentucky borders. People are incredible. Just awesome.
@Kenneth Cutler Wrong state
Best song about one of our most beautiful states. WVU had the best football team in the country in 2007 led by QB Pat White from my home state's, Daphne HS near Mobile. (just didn't prove it on the field losing to South Florida and Pitt) and I heard this song a lot during that season on the TV usually before the national anthem. During the 2010 Big East Tournament hearing that song when Bob Huggins' team was cutting the nets down in Madison Square Garden on the way to the Final Four was quite special. I had them in my bracket to win it all but Caron Butler got hurt and they lost to Duke in Indy. I'm heading up the 81, the 77 and the 79 one day to this part of America. I wished they were in the SEC instead of Missouri but that's life and politics.
Pat White really should have made it in the NFL
That was a good team beat my dawgs in the sugar bowl in Atl. They got up on us big in the first half. We were pretty good that year and made a big come back in the second half. However, the mountaineers executed a flawless fake punt in the final minutes and held on. If I’m not mistaken that was around the time all of those miners were trapped in that coal mine. They played country roads after the game in the old Georgia dome.
Thank you so much for the upload! Go WVU!
one day after my birthday at the game - TRULY THANK GOD!!
Stay tuned folks. I am going to post the video that Brad Paisley did when he came back and sang the song a couple years ago.
I don't think you can find it. I pulled it from the ABC CMA Awards special and it is AWESOME. I'll unveil it when we start this new football season.
John denver "Be nice" lol
LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Amazing.
want to be born 9/5/1974 and get to every WVU FOOTBALL GAME??? HMMM - Never FEAR MOUNTAINEERS! THE LORD IS NEAR!
'
Jay made this happen through crazy circumstances and the crowd booed him. So ridiculous.
I know right!
Good on John Denver for saying "be nice" though.
Almost heaven/West virginia
place I belong/West virginia
Go eers
So i take it that people from West Virginia like this song? Would that be accurate?
MelancoliaI People born and raised here have it in our genes...its in our blood...and wvu football
It's the WVU anthem, and I believe one of the state anthems (there are 3) as well
Like totally
we’re born knowing the lyrics 😂
Not too sure. Can't tell from this but at least I know they don't hate it. Can't see it becoming anything like an anthem for that stadium or state.
That stadium concert is so loud!!!
I wish John Denver should have a concert in The Island Of Sodor.
Is that the old stadium in downtown Morgantown or is that the one from the big hospital
It was the opening of the NEW stadium across from the hospital.

I have it on good authority that the official name isn't West Virginia....it's West BY GOD Virginia
Did anyone hear the story that John Denver said to the press on this day (or any other time) that this song was about "western Virginia"?
Actually it was about Maryland...but. Read this. www.wideopencountry.com/john-denver-take-me-home-country-roads-this-state/
kkona
And just like that, 500 meteors hit the stadium.
Fun fact .. He’s from New Mexico . Not WV 👌
Why was the governor and his wife booed??
He was in a tough race against popular former Governor Arch Moore. He was seen as extremely wealthy and not representative of West Virginia. He ended being one of the greatest advocates ever for West Virginia.
It was Jay Rockefeller of those Rockefeller’s. His uncle was Nelson Rockefeller.
Dixie might be hiding their heritage, but Appalachia will do no such thing!
Crappie soundtrack of one of the best versions of this great song.
Yet we’re lucky we have it at all…
I was there.
