This song reminds me of my first love. She was my classmate and we were good friends. I wasn’t “supposed” to love her because we weren’t in that kind of a relationship and she probably didn’t have similar feelings for me, she just looked at me as a friend, but I was so delusional at the time that I didn’t want to notice that. This song will always remind me of being a teenager, sat in my friend's family's house, and she taught me to play this song. Her parents were uber hippies and they had so many guitars. They always let our group of friends hang out in their house, they were like our second parents. I miss all those people a lot.
It was played at my brothers funeral...The song just perfectly expresses how my brother felt with other people and sometimes even with me, specialy in his last year. Can't believe it's already 13 years since he died...But I still love this song.

At least we have 5 records worth of great material and unreleased tracks (marmalade, outer space/fortress). Honestly, SOAD has enough old unrealsed material that they could put out a whole record. Pretty recently I had another one of those nights. The dark, lonely and suicidal nights. I’m not gonna get into what exactly happened that night but I ended up falling asleep. I woke up that night at 3 am to this song playing. It was truly surreal. I thought about everything between my own well-being, past relationships, the future. All of it. Hearing Serj and Daron voice was kind of like a weird comforting thing. Like there was someone there trying to comfort me.

In the early 2000s, I moved to a big city to get better education, while my parents stayed on the countryside. I lived with an older cousin. There I started to listen to System of a Down and seeing some of their videos on a local music TV channel. I was initially hooked by their "Toxicity" album. Occasionally, my parents would come to visit. One of those times, I asked them to take me to a local shop where I could get the latest release, "Steal This Album". I didn't know ANY songs of the album, but at those times you would blindly buy the CDs of your favorite bands. After that, while we were coming home, my father stopped the car to buy something else on another store. It was supposed to be quick, but he started to take time to come back, and my mother got bored (at the time nobody had a cell phone). Then she asked me to play my brand new CD. A chill went down my spine, cause she was a conservative and would be rather unpleased to know that her son was now into this kind of heavy, political music. She would probably start talking non-stop about "bad influences" and all that. Since I didn't know any of the songs, I checked the track list on the back of the CD and decided to take my chances and play this song called "Roulette" (instead of "Fuck The System", "Nuguns", "Boom!" and "A.D.D.", you know?). I was already bracing myself for some hellish power chord coming of the speakers when this GEM of a song started playing. I had never listened to a SOAD acoustic number and was stunned by the sheer beauty of the song (vocals, guitars, lyrics). My mother and I didn't say a word during those 03:22 minutes, mezmerized (ha!) by that mellow ballad. Seconds later my father came back during the first notes of that crazy bass riff from "Streamline", and I quickly turned the car stereo off. Only in 2011, when my mother saw a SOAD show broadcasted live (I was at the audience, that's why), she found they were a heavy band, not a soft one 😅 This is still one of the top System of a Down songs for me.

Having come home from work, I turned on my computer and put on Steal This Album for the very first time (having only thoroughly enjoyed Toxicity, Mesmerize and Hypnotize previously). Cooked dinner while Spotify was running and this song came up after Thetawaves. Instantly I rushed over to the computer, paused it and yelled to myself "Where have I heard this before?!?!"
Frantically I started trying to think of genres and hum the melody (hoping to find out and not have it stuck in my mind without knowing until half a year later) thinking of the style it fit, and after a couple of times I realised that Children Of Bodom, my all-time favourite metal band (because it was the first) had sampled this melody in "Are You Dead Yet?" (2005).
I'm mindblown, that's sick!

This album was so good. Finding it again after all of these years, I remember why I gravitated towards them in the first place.
