I think the mother was just like pearl when she was younger. She owned all of those pretty dresses for a reason. Her mother, pearl, Maxine, they are all are just extensions of one another except each woman is willing to go further than the previous. The mother probably had dreams that were halted by the father’s conditions and entertained thoughts of killing him (which is why she so easily jumped to that in the argument). She never went through with it and became bitter as a result. Pearl knew he and her mother stood in her way but unlike her mom was willing to kill them. She just didn’t have the perseverance so when she failed once she gave up. Her dreams relied heavily on being saved. Maxine has the will to do whatever it takes and the perseverance to make her dreams come true. Like she said in maxxxine, she was willing to save herself.

As a Christian I want to answer the question you posed when you asked why some people like Christians act like sex is bad. I can't speak for other people, but based on my understanding of God's intent for mankind, sex is not a bad thing but it must be done within the confines of marriage. God designed it as a gift for us to experience the highest form of physical pleasure with a person we love and are committed to. It was not designed to be done as casual as society likes to make it to be.
