    In Today's video Dr. Becky discusses the best ways to help someone who has a Gambling Addiction. The impact of a gambling addiction on the person involved, and on their family, can be considerable. Unsurprisingly, problem gamblers often have financial problems, and they are also are likely to experience affective issues, such as depression or anxiety, relationship breakdown, and a loss of trust. Many gambling addicts loose a romantic partner, a job, and more, because of their addiction. Many also suffer from a range of co-morbidities, which can include alcohol or other substance abuse, personality disorders, and recurrent suicidal ideation.
    Steps to help someone with Gambling Addiction;
    1. Monitor Gambling outgoings (profit vs. loss)
    2. Set Gambling Rules
    3. Explore their beliefs (without imposing your own)
    4. Make appropriate suggestions instead of criticising their beliefs

    really appreciate this deep dive from a holisitc/cbt/trad therapy angle...vs pure addiction psychology. the part about attitudes towards money being a root of gambling addiction hit home for me. a huge part of me does think money is the root of all evil. I have no respect for it and never have, it's always run thru my fingers even before i got into gambling. something i really need to work on. thank you

      No, it is absolutely not. Please read some scientific publications in this topic.
      The truth is that FOR SOME PEOPLE abstinence is the best and easiest way to overcome any addiction. We don’t know yet exactly what personality traits determines this.
      Moreover, if someone wants change but is against abstinence and believe in his or her ability of control, what should a therapist do. Saying “No, you are an ill person who can’t control your own emotions so you mustn’t try it” is the worst idea.

      @@kmarci1000 harm reduction/tapering worked for me in drug and alcohol addiction on the road to abstinence. i am currently able to drink in moderation and like this therapist says i think being able to control it does empower me. but i'm in the place where i'm honest about it with myself and everyone around me and if that were to ever change i would have to do abstinence. it's also dependent on overall health, especially mental. i don't think moderation or controlled whatever would work for someone in crisis/stressed out state. i'm skeptical it can work with gambling tho, especially early on. the rush is too quick and strong. when i think harm reduction/MAT/replacement therapy for gambling i think bingo or playing without money or something lol. video games

    But what to do when the person uses the fact that it’s an addiction as an excuse for some of their behaviour? Like, “you can’t blame me or be angry with me because it’s not my fault I’m addicted.” My sister in law robbed her elderly father blind for 6 months before we realized what was happening and put a stop to it (we live far so we couldn’t see what was going on). Now she’s low key blaming us because supposedly we knew about her problem and we should have been on top of it. I mean, is that an excuse for almost throwing her father out in the street? Is it our fault? I’m ready to have compassion if I see a true admission of the problem and her taking responsibility for it. But as long as she’s telling us it’s our fault and she’s giving us like 1000s reasons and excuses for her behaviour, I’m sorry, I just cannot take it.

      speaking as an addict (in long-term recovery from substances, gambling is a new one i'm working on lol) accountability is the biggest gift you can give an addict. consequences, rules...don't let her gaslight you and deflect all blame and responsibility. you think you're being kind and understanding but it is hurting her to not hold her accountable for her bullshit. protect yourselves. "I’m ready to have compassion if I see a true admission of the problem and her taking responsibility for it" exactly.
      hope she's doing better...but this is the worst addiction i've ever lived with. there's a feeling i'll always be fighting it...drugs and alcohol have been easier for me bc as long as i'm not around them it's easy. gambling is one click away. can't run away from the psychological problems and vices that make me want to do it. so your SIL needs to deal with these and it seems like being a brat (addicts are brats) is part of the issue. i also think brain chemistry during and after (not long-term, i think it can be repaired) addiction lends itself to selfishness and deflection. so you HAVE to not put up with her bs. you're doing her and her brain a favor

    In Massachusetts, the State keeps approving more gambling options and making more scratch tickets, Keno every 2 minutes now, etc. But all they offer is an "800" number for help. There are no mental health counselors at all for gamblers. I feel it disgusting how gambling is promoted by the State for profit at the expense of people who have developed faulty thinking thanks to them (it's progressive) or prey on people who already have faulty thinking. How does one get CBT/DBT out there to help gamblers. GA is the only option in MA yet there are meetings far and few in between. Do you have any ideas to help gamblers in Massachusetts?

    • @tinaferr
      @tinaferr Před rokem +1

      but methadone can help on the road to total sobriety, it can be a stepping stone, part of a taper. also methadone is a good option for something who wouldn't ever quit heroin otherwise...it's a drug but you don't have all the social ills that go along with heroin, the lifestyle. i think a better parallel to methadone and heroin would be mimicking the gambling neurochemicals with something like bingo or idk...just gambling with no or tiny amounts of money. video games. getting your fix without it hurting you. i'm skeptical of gambling tho bc the urge gets worse the more you win or lose.

      Hello, i do suffer with gambling addiction because of bad choices and greed. however, cryptocurrency investment and or trading is not like gambling when you gamble you have a 49% chance of winning while the casino has a 51% chance of winning, their game is rigged. trading on the other hand what u should do is go into a more solid project with real use cases, to my comparison if you go into Tron with a 70% loss all you need to do is wait until the price of Tron goes up, that's not how gambling work, its all or nothing. I would move away from leverage trading and only do spot trading and just set a small goal of 1% profit per day do not be greedy. Avoid new projects, and set stop loss and avoid trading on dex, go with cex where u can set stop loss.

    @willsmith-tz5py Před rokem

    Tbh if somebody seeks help. Things in most cases must be pretty bad. So abstinence must be the answer in most cases. I think it’s totally naive to think controlled gambling is the answer. The reality is that gambling is a very unprofitable way of spending your way. Gambling companies because of their increased costs are dramatically reducing returns and giving worse odds to punters. Gamblers have an expectation of returns from their bets. For example 10 years ago if you bet say 100 a day on a variety of bets you would expect to get at least £80 back now you only get about £60. As a result you unconsciously bet more and more to get that £80 return. Seductively with promotion companies lure you into thinking that if you bet note you will win. It is so dangerous. Also gambling is mostly a sad solitary way of spending your time. If say gambling didn’t exist there would be so many people spending more time being sociable, productive and friendly in society. Believe me there is the silent majority who would prefer not to have gambling has a hobby. These therapists should wise up and realise this.
