  • They went for it! I love how the Cyphers work so well in themselves but also clearly show the difference between each member's rap style.

*Let me briefly explain BTS rapline to you!*
*RM* is a poet. You can not change my mind. His lyricism reads, sounds and works like poetry: a few words have multiple meanings and derivate in multiple chains of thought. Every time you listen to them, you discover new details, new ideas, new insights. Even when he's being straightforward, there's still some some philosophy or revelation or a big question or an aesthetic behind them. A poem is full of passion, but every word is chosen carefully, with intention. They're puzzle pieces, every piece has a place to create the full picture. It's a form of ART. WORDS WITH INTENTION.
*SUGA's* lyricism is like "an arrow straight to the heart": you immediately understand the emotion he's trying to convey, you don't need to even know what he's saying to know "what you're supposed to FEEL". What he says is always interesting too, and it has layers too, but, from the first listen.... You usually feel that same way after listening to his song 1000 times. Even when the song is sociopolitical or when it displays an idea, your first impression is a STAB OF EMOTION forever tattooed in your memory.
*J HOPE's* lyricism is like a playground, an amusement park. A place where magical things happen, where you are encouraged to bend the rules. It's full of bright primal colors, you walk around with bounce in your steps and inevitably feel the childlike impulse of starting to dance around, or start imitating his onomatopoeias and alibis. There's a quirky creativity in his choice of analogies and a pure-hearted kindness in his message. Even when he expresses anger or sadness, there's this sense of DYNAMIC RHYTHM that is always moving, always unpredictable and ALIVE.
*EDIT: Some examples to illustrate my description:*
    *RM:*
    - "From the time everyone is born / Life is more beautiful because it uses death as the collateral payment." (Life)
-"I grew a flower that can't be bloomed / In a dream that can't come true." (FAKE LOVE)
-"Why do you keep trying to hide under your mask, / when even the scars made by your own mistakes mark your constellations." (Answer: Love Myself.)
    *SUGA:*
    - "If you think you're gonna crash, accelerate even harder, you idiot" (Intro: Nevermind)
"Hip hop came to me gently / Like a little child looks for his mother, /it naturally permeated into my life (...) If loving this culture was a sin, would have died hundreds of times." (Hip Hop Phile)
    - 'To be honest, I miss you, but I'll erase you now / Because doing so hurts me less than resenting(blaming) you" (Spring Day)
    *J HOPE:*
The standard of happiness is you, and you walk that path / I wish to fill up faith / Like a piece of cake that is simple and filling (...) I wish, could be a Piece Of Peace." (P.O.P)
"Oh, I'm on top of the beat beat, wiggle wiggling. jingle jingling/roll rolling, beagle beagling (...) This is just for tasting, still a snack / My rap is a Korean meal that fills your stomach." (Cypher pt. 3)
"My sin, the dog that bites and tears my resting self/ "Don't do that," although shout it out, every day I'm hung up on accomplishments." (Dis-ease)
-"It's just that for once I want to draw a different picture of my life / A canvas dream // Beyond the boundary over there, let's feel it / Like the hole Alice fell into, like the path leading to Hogwarts, it'll be a world of mirages (Daydream)

34:10 Supreme Boi acts like their hypeman... It's a common rap tradition to have like a host/hypeman to introduce u, or hype you. Jhope played that role in Cypher 2, since the main point of the cypher was to address the underground rappers who were coming after RM and Suga.

Interesting thing to note in Cypher 4. The use of the word "bae" can also be interpreted as "hoobae" or "sunbae" (Junior or Senior) which is widely used in Korea. Also, how cool is it that they created cypher 4 to get an entire stadium of thousands of ppl chant "I love myself" even before their Love Myself album era.

(Sorry if this comment is long I’m trying to add to it whilst watching the video)
6:44 His name when he was an underground rapper was Runch Randa :)
7:26 yes, jhope learnt to rap after he joined bts
11:11 yes that was supreme boi but I think it was supposed to say ‘deck’ 😂
11:27 supreme boi is one of the in house producers at big hit/ hybe. I think he was supposed to be in the group but once it was changed from a hip hop group to an idol group a lot of the original line up left (RM is the only in the group now that was apart of the original lineup) . I don’t think he hated them but I’m not 100% sure but there have been a few times that he has been very problematic.
27:01 if you ever want to check them out on or off camera, these cyphers sound even better live 💕
40:17 idk if the Hong Kong thing is common outside of Korea or not but I live in the uk and I’ve heard a few people say it 😂
Just some thing I though I would add:
    - they often say with their music, they don’t target anyone specifically or use any names but if you feel attacked or offended by the song then that on you
-Also,I love that you actually pay attention to the lyrics and appreciate their different styles/ strengths in rapping, especially the use of word play :)

Supreme Boi does not 'hate' the boys. He is literally very good friends with J-Hope. RM and Suga are also good friends with him, but we hear about him the most from J-Hope. J-Hope also had Supreme Boi on his mixtape on a song about 'their team', basically including Supreme Boi as part of the 'BTS team'.

I feel like Supreme Boi is a bit like BigHit producer Adora? Could have been an artist but preferred to stay in the background (less pressure)? Adora sings on some BTS tracks (for example "Seesaw") and has a wonderful voice. Her looks would have qualified her for an Idol too, but oviously she didn't want that for herself.

BTS didn't exist when j-hope started to rap. He moved to the BigHit dorms on December 2010. There were only rappers as trainees at that time, like Namjoon, Suga, Supreme Boi and others. Hoseok watched them having rap battles and he decided to learn by himself (with help but he took the decision to learn), so he could join to the rap battles too. The rest of the members joined in BH 1-2 years after. So, he raps way before he debuted with BTS.

11:03 lots of ppl misunderstands this because of the mistranslation in the lyric video. Supreme Boi is saying "Triptych" NOT "track dick" check the title of the song. Triptych is defined as a work of art in 3 parts. 😁 There's 3 rappers in BTS after all. Supreme Boi was the rapper that came in as first in the Hit It auditions that Suga came in 2nd in. He left the group after they changed it to a kpop idol group, but remained with Big Hit as a producer, where he still is today.

RM went by many names when he was in underground hip hop (Runch Randa) was his most popular one- side note: some of his early stuff is translated on YT under that name if you wanna check it out-so that line about “your top 5” he’s basically naming himself over and over.
And the “your dad” thing is a hip hop thing where rappers will say “you’re my son” as in I paved the way, I was the biggest in the scene, and now all of you are just copying my playbook (“following the leader”, call back to his earlier line “third generation leader, so imma lead ya”- which is also a reference to BTS being a 3rd generation Kpop group and sweeping all the rookie of the year awards)

Hallyu is "the Korean wave". Literal meaning could be "wave/flow of Korea" it's the word used to describe the increasing global popularity of South Korean culture. So they see it as "waves".
There are certain things that happen that increases the global popularity of South Korean culture and they describe those big increase in popularity as Hallyu. for example, famous movies like "my sassy girl", "parasite", "Train to Busan", The increasing popularity of kdramas, brands like Samsung and Hyundai(originated in SK), and also Artists like BTS who played a major part in the Hallyu wave.
So that's what Jhope is saying here that they will be the kids leading the 21st-century Hallyu. It's good to note that at the time when the song came out, it was still their goal. but now they have truly achieved it as they are the biggest thing leading Hallyu.

It's quite amazing how much confidence they had. Other old school songs like 'If I ruled the world', 'Attack on Bangtan' makes me question whether they had a vision that they'll get big one day, even though they had very low the chances of huge success in the competitive k-pop industry let alone the global music market.

    - In Cypher 3 RM's lines about only rapping with two or thre words... He uses that reference in Joke as well, with other words though.
    - You should definitely check out Joke as well. RM made Joke as a FU to other rappers dissing him for signing as an idol. They questioned his abilities to rap fast as if that was all that mattered. So he wrote Joke which is a mix of jibberish and brilliant wordplay to say that it's not just about speed, content is also important. It's like *chef's kiss*! Runch Randa was RM's stage name when he was an underground rapper....before he joined BigHit as trainee.
This was actually a comment I wrote in your Rise of Bangtan Ch.4 video - : Idk if you noticed, the guy who quit as BTS trainee (11even) is the same guy that RM went to see at the cafe (together with Supreme Boi - who is now one of the in-house producer at BigHit. He is also featured in Cypher Pt.2 & 3). Supreme Boi was also at the cafe where one of the guy said something about RM wearing makeup. I think this could be the reason why some Army are not so fond of Supreme Boi...cause he was one of the guys who criticize RM for becoming an idol.
In Cypher Pt.2, in Suga's verse, there's a line "go to hawaii..." is a direct hit at a Korean rapper, B-Free who was born in Hawaii. He was one of the rappers who trash talked RM and Yoongi for 'selling out' by becoming an idol and wearing makeup. Last year he was charged for assault against another rapper lol

I have no idea what kind of person he is privately, but the song where he literally raps about raping someone (just a little taste: „I‘m not your lover, I‘m your owner“) gives me a good indication. Tidbit info:
"When guys are smoking and girls are cheating"... not that there was any controversy around this line. But after War of Hormone, later when Joon perform this song he changed the lyrics from "when some smoke and some cheat" ( Joon never mention it why he changed this, but we assume 'when girls cheat' sound misogynistic, like it's a negative portrayal of girls and feed social stereotypes that girls usually cheat...not men. And after WOH, Joon made conscious effort to not to have misogynistic lyrics in their songs).
I appreciate him so much, he is a literal example of learning and growing from mistakes and becoming a better person.
    Character development 💜.

One of the things I like about BTS music is that all their songs need context to being fully understood. The album where they are from, the year they were written, who wrote the lyrics, etc are all important. Their music grows with them. The cyphers is their journey to understand that “haters gonna hate”, no matter what BTS do. That’s why the last cypher says “I love myself” and it’s in their Wings/You Never Walk Alone album followed up by their Love Myself series. It’s all connected!
About reading the lyrics while reacting, I think lyrics video/doolset is the best combo. Let’s remember that a translation is an interpretation and every translator have their style. It’s very important to read more than one point of view to have a broader understanding of the lyrics (This advice is not only for reactors but also for armys). But of course, this is your channel so you should do what you are most comfortable with. 💜 💜
In July, after I’m done with my exams, I’m going to listen to all their songs in order, reading several translations, something that I regret not doing when I became an army. It’s going to take a while but it’s going to be worthy. 💜

Supreme Boi was friends with Namjoon since middle school. He and Namjoon helped form a rap crew and several in this crew were part of BTS when it was still preparing to be a rap act but as they all left because of the restrictions. Many rapheads, especially into early gangster rap think of that Hip-hop rappers are supposed to be raw, honest, macho and anti-establishment. The restrictions and many rules of idols and kpop idol's highly produced image and music are looked down on so they criticized Namjoon who had been such a talent and star underground. I don't think they understood how he could be true to his music and be an Idol. Supreme Boi may not have understood Namjoon and acknowledged the conflict but he stayed friends unlike many of n the crew who cut him off and criticized RM. I think he also tried to mediate since he continued as part of the crew for quite a while.
He is more into the hip-hop lifestyle and that can be a scene of sexism, macho posturing, substance abuse and other problematic behavior. Even if you abstain, if your around it, trouble is just waiting for you. He is close the many in Bighit and a veteran producer there since he was a teenager. He is often the father of the grittier hip-hop tracks from Bighit. He was also involved in RM's mixed tapes (Tokyo) and Jhope's.

Well supreme Boi was supposed to be in BTS back when BTS was supposed to strictly be a group of rappers. So when Bang PD wanted to make it an idol group, 4 of the original members left and supreme Boi was one of them.
He ended up returning to BH as an in-house producer and has produced many BTS songs but he was intitially critical of the whole idol thing bc most rappers in Korea are critical of idols. An honestly, it’s understandable since he was preparing for one thing and it was suddenly changed.
Anyways, he produces their cyphers and he has a great relationship with the boys now

There is many controversies when it comes to Supreme Boi. So for some context he was trainee alongwith RM and was in the line up when BTS were to debut as Hip Hop Group. After the change to K-Pop Idol group, he left but remained with the company as In house Producer for BH Artist mainly BTS. Many songs are credited to him. However, apart from this he was a part of hip hop group Rockbottam which are controversial for their support in many things including drugs, drinking etc.
