You and Me: Ice (1984) - FULL EPISODE

- So who remembers You and Me? Set on a market stall with puppets Cosmo and Dibs and humans including Gary Wilmot and Indira Joshi, apparently the manifesto was to inform, educate, entertain, and see the world from a child’s point of view - but never patronise the young audience. I think it succeeded. We used to watch this at school way back when, but it's only more recently when I've seen a few through adult eyes that I realise one of the major themes of the show is diversity and inclusivity - from the obvious such as gender and skin colour right through to relatively minor regional differences (e.g. accents) and those with disabilities. It genuinely was a programme well ahead of its time.
None of which really applies to this particular episode, though, which I gather was first broadcast on Thursday, 18th October, 1984. This is a vaguely sciencey one about ice and water, based as it is on a hot summer's day. Running the market stall is Michael Balfour, whose impressive IMDB goes right back to 1938, and he delivers a well-crafted lesson about wet hats and speaking up. We're also treated to a piece on skating, while the animated story read to us is Meg at Sea, the whole thing bookended by a theme tune recorded by none other than UB40. Nice and gentle kids' TV, all in all.
I'm trying to figure out if the lady who plays Cosmo is Frances Kay the writer, or a different Frances Kay. Any ideas? Dibs, on the other hand, is an easy one: that's Francis Wright, the guy who was The Head on Art Attack, the Psammead in Five Children and It, and Colin the Bat in Grotbags. He's done loads, from Spitting Image to Labyrinth to Sooty, and is one of the foremost puppeteers of a televisual generation, even though he'll never be a household name. Extremely talented chap, nonetheless.
Grateful thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

Take me back to those pure and innocent days! Never forgotten that theme tune in all these years.
They were great days - although I didn't think so at the time - but what I'd give to get them back now!
It's sung by UB40
@@deenadam7793 It certainly sounds like it.
@@TheRealBookofJoshuait is - watch the credits at the end
It is like a blow to the stomach when I watch things like this. The nostalgia is so powerful. It makes me think that having digital memories is not good for some humans if they regret the mistakes they made during life. At least our ancestors only had Selective memories and words in books. We can literally confirm how much better life was by watching it on a screen.

Back when children’s tv actually taught you valuable things to learn. I learnt more from these than I did at school
Many modern kids' shows are educational.
ohhhh where have the years gone.....wish I had a time machine back to the 80s
So true. I'd thumbs-up your comment a million times if I could!
Me two
Wouldn’t it be nice to go home again!
If you ever find a time machine, let us know. We will come back with you #80s
Too right. Enough technology to enhance life but not dominate it. The peak of humanity
Just reminds me bing off school sick watching these episodes in pure comfort.
Loved this! Everytime I was off school sick, I’d watch the schools programmes on 2 and channel 4 😊👏
Do you remember Portland bill and cockleshell bay, the flumps, pigeon street. Jam sandwiches and a quattro fizzy drink. Good days !
I'm 37 and was born in 1984 . They don't make kids television programs like they used to. I too used to love being off of school sick watching these programs. I also remember only being able to get lucozade in a glass bottle from the chemist.
Hehe me too 😊
Wow! These are a real blast from the past! I used to watch these at school when I was 5 - I'm 40 now!
Miss being a kid and my childhood days.
Oh it was a good day at school in the 80's when they rolled out the TV and put on You and Me.
Those of a certain generation 100% relate; the current generation has absolutely no idea what you mean by _"rolled out_ the TV".
@@VideotapeFTW For that, and so much more, I pity them.
I always used to love it - so did all my mates! Great days! If only they'd come back!
I just randomly remembered this show; we used to watch it in primary school!
On a wooden TV with big plastic buttons that had been wheeled in on a big stand? Me, too. ;-)
@@VideotapeFTW So did my mates and I! We used to watch it in the music room. We loved it. What wonderful days!
Why don't they make kiddie programmes like this anymore? My 4 year old just sat here mesmerised, so did I.
They do but they're all on CBBC or CITV. You're just not looking on the right TV channels.
Because they don’t want us to learn
😂 "they"
They just playing the game, just remember the world chose it's path it's got nothing to do with me and some things can never be reversed
I remember as a kid thinking Cosmo and Dibs’ market was the same as Del Boy’s in Only Fools and Horses!
You’re not too far off actually. The market was based on Shepherd’s Bush Market.
The first series of twenty programmes was begun at the BBC's Lime Grove Studios, part of which overlooked Shepherd's Bush Market. It was completed at BBC Television Centre in Wood Lane, which became the show's regular home for all but the last series. Additional puppet characters joined Cosmo and Dibs for the final two seasons, and the street market disappeared in favour of a brightly coloured domestic setting.
Im shedding a tear over the passing of Astro and Brian this evening. Ill never forget you guys.
I CZcamsd it because I still sing the into... I’m in my 40’s now 😂
Love the reggae theme tune.
I just thought about this and googled it, because I was thinking about how to say 'you and me', against 'you and I' LOL, this is a mega-blast from the past. I used to sit cross-legged in the TV room on floor having to watch this compulsory tv show. But it was fun to just chill for a while instead of in the classroom doing boring school stuff.
So long ago now, faded memories.. but that tune.. wow. I remember it.
It was good that UB4O took time out to record the theme tune.
I like to imagine it took them longer to nail this than whatever album they were working on at the time for some reason.
I loved that theme tune
This is so old school... they were probably still scratching on at the time!
was it UB40 ?????????
😂
This takes me back to my childhood. I'd completely forgotten about this programme.
Haven’t seen this since 1992. Didn’t know ub40 did the theme song. And I just found out this song inspired oasis she’s electric - cos I’ll be you and you’ll be me, lots and lots for us to see, lots and lots for us to do
Kids were better behaved back then 😊
I was a kid then and a parent now... I disagree! Plus ça change.
Definitely. Today's Secondary school children in the bus need to be chucked out of the bus because of their behaviour
Umm... No
They looked like kids, not clones straight out of a JD catalogue
Culture was better back in 80s and 90s not perfect but better
Loved this tv show as a kid!
Fun Fact: UB40 performed this for the show. You'll notice parts of it sounds like Cherry Oh Baby.
Loved this as a kid .
This was where I first heard the story the tiger who came tea - used to love this
"It's all slippery..." "...And rock hard !" Boy, did innuendos go over your head as a kid !
Childhood corrupted lol!
Thx for uploading this! I used to love this ha ha still do love the intro by ub40
You're very welcome. :-)
I used to love this as a kid!! So nostalgic
Teaching real stuff like ice which i later used in life for gin and tonic
Great show and theme tune the good old days
Michael (Mr B.) Balfour was only a presenter in around 1984 but I'm sure his episodes were being repeated later. I also saw Mike Grady (Ken in Citizen Smith/Barry in Last of The Summer Wine) in the credits, I can remember him well as a presenter. I watched You and Me until 1987 when I decided I was too old. I remember my brother watching the later episodes in 1988-89 where they replaced Henry the Kangaroo with Sherbett the Robot and I remember the programme never looked as good when they were in the house which was when Baxter and Spike joined.
Lots of memories watching this. I showed it to my 5 and 6 year old. They were captivated!
2:00 lol at 4 years old I certainly wasn't thinking "that's what she said" 😂
When I was very young, I found it entrancing that it was set outdoors. I really don't know why.
I suppose it is a little unusual. Odd, the things that strike a chord for no reason in particular. :-)
I loved the theme cause it’s reggae and also pigeon street. Thanks for posting.....
The nostalgia! I loved this show and Pigeon Street! I wish they made kids shows like these nowadays; they were so engaging!
Pigeon street was very "right on" for 1981-ish.
Oh memories
Brings it all flooding back, doesn't it? :-)
Nice to see a wee home vid of princess di and the two young princes
Awosome memories nothing today can beat that time old is gold missssss my childhood
This is what you end up watching when you`re classes have gone online because of a deadly virus. Simpler times.
Omfg! Thank you so much!!!
UB40 theme tune! ❤ loved this programme as a kid!!
Thanks for the upload, I used to love this!
You're very welcome! (And all credit to Lee for the recording.)
Thank you for uploading this, if really is interesting. If I had kids I'd save these old gems to see what they thought :)
This was how I remembered and still do, that you and me = us, you and I = we, thanks to the theme tune!
I wonder where the puppets of Cosmo and Dibs are now.
I remember the name of this show, the intro song, and the puppet characters. I don't however remember it being set in a market, or the names of any of the characters! My pre-1986 memory is a bit fuzzy like that...
Had no idea UB40 did the theme...
1st time seeing this since 1987 ! (I think !) MEG & MOG ! !
Lol my childhood how I miss
Omg I used to live watching this, i must have only been 4 or 5 at the time.
I used to watch this, i was born in 1982
Me too.i was born in 1980.
@@redrebel4540 good times
@@Adam-ir4ck ☺️ I was born in 1978, and my younger brother was born in 1980; we loved this show when we were little! I loved the days when we got to watch it at school, and little 4-year-old me would vibe to the theme song lol!
@@redrebel4540 That means that you're turning 42 this year if you haven't already! It's my younger brother's birthday today, and he's a 1980 baby too; happy Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy year to both of you!
id love to see some you and me clips from late 80s early 90s when i used to watch it.
I'm afraid all I've got is from this era - sorry...
no thats fine, i ws just making a general comment haha there is actually one i found on youtube from that time. it was set in a house instead of a marketplace.
There's an unaired out-take where Gary Wimot fluffs his lines and Dibbs calls him a wanker ! :D :D
Yes, that's Francis Wright (Colin the Bat from Grotbags, The Head from Art Attack, and loads more) being his mischievous self!
Thursday 18th October 1984
Brilliant
Best days of life. Just didnt realise it. Life was easy then
When kids programmes were educational and great.
Best Kids show ever !
Cosmo & dibs... Dynamic duo...
Memories! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Amazing how the fridge works outside!
Please could you close the door, Mr B?
I loved Meg and Mog! I think my niece and nephew have Meg and Mog books now
It's good to know that these things cross generations. :-)
They were my fave bit when I watched t hem as a kid! Thanks for upload VideotapeFTW
Dont forget owl!!
HOw long were they waiting for that ice cream at the end? it turned to night and he still hadnt returned!!!
“Here’s some that I………I put in this morning” this guy ain’t getting sued by Blue Peter for nobody
I loved You and Me, along with Cockleshell Bay, Pigeon Street, Why Don't You?
Very cool!
What?! UB40 did the theme music, but I only thought of them for Red, Red Wine.
It's a reggae arrangement of the older You and Me theme.
2:00 it's all slippery and rock hard
😏
YES!
so true.....maybe one day ☺
Oasis -She’s electric
Still love the into song
hasty ? i would of pissed myself if he spoke to me like that when i was a kid
icecubes.
And a special thank you to Aswad for performing the theme tune.
It's actually UB40. :-)
Now I know why I wanted to eat peaches when I watched this
loved this and Words and Pictures, with the magic pen
Yeah, me too. You know, I never figured out for definite exactly how they did that magic pencil - I mean, I've got a few theories, but I've never been 100% certain...
During the Cosmo and Dibs era of You and Me the main cast would perform a song relevant to the episode.
Cosmo and Dibbs Came quite late to this show .. What happened to Duncan the Dragon and Crow and Alice ( A gerbil/hamster ) ?
Zig and Zag!
Norma from ‘shameless’ Cosmo’s voice !
You And Me was the template for Eastenders..
Great programme and loved this when I was 3, Do you have the intro or any episodes for 80's kids show:Erasmus Microman............Last time I saw anything on Erasmus Microman was on a programme on ITV called: You Saw Them Here First back in 2014 with actor Nick Pickard talking about his career
I'm afraid I don't think I do, no. Sorry. If I manage to stumble across anything, I'll definitely upload it.
@@VideotapeFTW Erasmus Microman content is *extremely* rare these days.
Does anyone know that UB40 got paid a few quid to do the theme song for this show! Before they were GIANTS!
What _are_ Cosmo and Dibbs? Non-copyright infringing Muppets?
A non-copyright infringing Muppet is just a puppet, isn't it?
Did UB40 do the theme tune for this??
They did indeed, yes.
what's cheryl cole doin on here ?
Where ever to? Stuey Sandhurst!
Born in 82’ Where you at 40 yr Olds???
Coz I’ll be you and you’ll be me, there’s lots and lots for us to see, there’s lots and lots for us to do! She is electric, can I be electric too?
Oh hello! The Mancs in the house!
Revenge of Billy the Kid!
But don’t worry dibs cosmos back
*Look Around You* - Ice
Yeah, I've been watching that on the iPlayer recently, too. ;-)
Mr B,can I have a flake and raspberry sauce?
Can anyone answer my question Was it this show that Haed have A episode when they were talking about scary noises
❗Just to confirm but were the puppets meant to be lionesses?
I don't think they're meant to be any species in particular - just that one's male and one's female, one's lighter in colour and the other's darker, and one's got a very strong regional accent. Diversity and inclusivity, you see.
Cosmo was on comic relief no with dibs that’s sad
Very jaunty rasta beat.
Classes theme tune
I heard it was Azwad that did the theme tune?
It sounds a bit like them, but this is UB40.
what year did Spike and Baxter first appear in You and Me?
Not sure, but it was later than this episode. I'm sure someone else can help.
Has somebody got an episode of you and me from 1993 to 95?
Hi do u have any you and me episodes from the 90s?
I'm afraid not, no - just the 80s. Sorry!
No problem m8😃😃😃
only wish i knew how lol
