  • Lumix has finally announced that the GH6 will support BRAW recording to a Blackmagic Video Assist and that got me excited to rethink my rig and see what's possible. The result, however, was quite unexpected!

    Nice vid. I am glad I found your channel. I shoot with GH6 and am always looking how to best rig it. I experiment a lot! Ha ha… blessings

      Thanks man! Yeah it's a deep rabbit hole isn't it. I've recently tried out the BRAW and it actually seems really good so it would be awesome to use. Might need to trade in my 7" for 5" model, although the HDMI lag still gets me. Cheers,

    While I agree with all your assessments of having the right tool for the right job, and keeping the GH6 more minimized. I would think for production situations where having 2 cameras recording in a more flexible format, like BRAW, might have an advantage at times. Particularly when it comes to color matching the two cameras in post. Again not knocking keeping the GH6 in a run & gun setup 90% of the time, but given you are using the Pocket for certain types of shoots implies you do content in that workflow as well. In my opinion testing the GH6 out and seeing if it could at lest function as a second RAW shooter if not just as a backup camera, if the need arises, would make sense. Particularly as you already have the parts.
    On a slightly different thought. If the Video Assist 7" is to heavy, and that is number 1 reason you switched, and don't seem to be using the 7" then wouldn't in make sense to sell it and get a 5" video assist? I do realize the 5" doesn't have the XLR inputs, but perhaps from a weight standpoint it would be a better option. Anyhow just my 2 cents.

      Cheers man, you make some really good points. I do use it as a B cam for the BMPCC sometimes and it works well. I don't see BRAW as a necessity for this though, especially with internal Prores available. They match quite well if you do a custom WB on both. Definitely awesome that the GH6 is so flexible though, it really is a swiss army knife, just add an external recorder and you have that RAW capability available.
      I have thought of selling the the 7" for a 5" which would make the rig work really well. The main thing that I'm still hesitant about is the HDMI lag. With no XLR ins you have to use the cameras audio ins which means you need audio over HDMI which increases the lag. Makes manual focus on the fly difficult as you can move past the focus point before you see it in focus.
      I've since done some BRAW tests with the GH6 though and it does look bloody good. Definitely going to keep experimenting. Nothing I said in this video is set in stone, it's all just a camera journey!
      Cheers!

    It is interesting that you do not operate the GH6 via a dummy battery. Is there a special explanation for this?

    • @jonpaultucker
      @jonpaultucker  Před rokem +2

      The GH6 was designed to take power delivery via USB C. If you have a battery or power bank capable of delivering 9V 3A I think it's the best solution. I'm sure a dummy battery would work as well. Thanks for watching.

    Are you another fellow Aussie?
    Great video man! Just curious about what the handle you have that accommodates the xlr adapter? That seems extremely helpful!

    • @jonpaultucker
      @jonpaultucker  Před rokem

      Yeah mate, based in Melbourne. How about you? The handle is the "SmallRig Top Handle for Sony XLR-K1M / K2M / K3M and Panasonic DMW-XLR1 Adapter 3082" . It works well but even at the lowest height setting with no XLR adapter on it's taller than I'd like. A traditional handle height feels better but if you need to use the XLR adapter it's the only real option and does the job.

      @@jonpaultucker oh nice! Always great to see an Australian on here, especially in video gear talk haha! I’m also Melbourne based as well :)
      Yeah cool, I may have pick that up and keep it in my bag for the few times I need to run the adaptor for a boom set up or something and can swap back to a normal top handle when I’m just running my 2.4ghz wireless mic system instead.
      Thanks for the info!

    I came here because I made the update to 2.3 on my GH6 and wanted to check out possibilities on BRAW now.
    Nothin about that have I seen. On a video with the title "GH6 BRAW update".

      @jonpaultucker  Před rokem

      It's called "Rig Talk", I talked about camera rigs and how the BRAW update influenced the rig. If you want to check out the possibilities of BRAW then go shoot some.
