  • We compare the Rode Blimp Windshield to the Micolive Blimp Windshield. The Micolive Blimp Windshield from DF Digital Foto is a much cheaper option at half the price of the Rode blimp. The Rode Blimp Windshield and Rycote Shock Mount Suspension System for Shotgun Microphones has been a tried and true filmmaking tool for years but it’s not affordable for everyone. The Micolive Microphone Windshield Blimp is nearly identical to the Rode in shape and form. Through all of our audio tests, we found that it performs just as well and is a great alternative. It works perfectly with the Rode NTG1, NTG2, NTG3 and NTG4.

    Excellent review ... well delivered. I just got into sound recording today ...as I bought Zoom H5, Rode Go Wireless and headset ... Can you imagine I had made a Blimp Suspension Windshield System all by myself 25 years ago while working on wildlife films.

      thanks! That's awesome, sounds like you got some great audio recording gear. That's crazy that you made your own windshield back in the day, very impressive!

    Blimps look so freaking professional. Whenever I see BTS of sets and there's a blimp, I think to myself 'it must be a high budget production.' It's popular to say gear doesn't matter, but when you are charging money for a project, it doesn't hurt to impress with professional gear. Plus, you have to cut out the ambient noise.

    • @chadwin

      Marcos Rocha 100% agree! Certain pieces of gear absolutely matter and make your work so much better. Looking more professional to the client is always a win IMO.

    So, the thin XLR cable that scares you so much is a better feature in Rode's Blimp, also present in Rycote's models. It helps decouple handling noise from the grip or pole. Also I wonder about the durability of the suspension systems. Rycote's Lyre system (real thing adopted by Rode) is very robust.

    Hi, why were you not recording that sound directly in your camera? Whats the use of that external recorder? What will happen if you use Shotgun mic with blip and dead cat and record the sound into the camera without using ZOOM recorder ?
    is it only because of gain control ? or there is any other facilities ? Gain can be controlled from Camera too .

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před 4 lety

      Lony's Works in this situation in particular I used the Zoom because it has multiple XLR inputs so I could record both mics at once. But yes, you can definitely plug the mic directly into your camera and get audio and levels control, as long as you have an XLR input or adapters to plug into your camera

    • @DrLony
      @DrLony Před 4 lety +1

      @@chadwin I know I can but my question is , does it create any difference on sound quality for external recorder? or the quality is same ? as we know we can control the gain level from recorder and also from camera too. will the quality be same ?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před 4 lety +1

      Lony's Works the sound quality will be very similar yes, but you may see a small quality increase by using the Zoom, because it has better audio drivers than the camera, also it records in high quality WAV instead of compressed MP4 files. To the naked ear though, you prob won’t hear a massive difference

    • @antoineholliday7631
      @antoineholliday7631 Před 3 lety +1

      @@DrLony Cameras usually have terrible preamplifiers! External recorders are generally better. By "terrible preamps" I mean the noisy buzzing/hissing sound you hear in almost all audio recordings. Sure, you can attempt to remove the noisy sound in post. However, the more noise you try to remove, the more distorted it's going to sound. On top of all the other noise that you may have to remove.

    Nicely done, but I was really hoping to hear a side by side comparison with the wombat/dead cats on them too. I've watched a couple videos where the dead cat on the Micolive windscreen muffles the sound a little more than I am comfortable with, and I was hoping to hear the Rode dead cat right next to it for comparison. Otherwise, nice comparison. Thank you.

    Perhaps the thin, flexible cable section is Rode's attempt to reduce the cable's transmission of handling vibration/sound. It seems intentional. Rode designs well.

    Good video, nice review. I do not know in the US but in Europe the Rode blimp dose come with the dead wombat included and the price is about 215 to 220 euro witch is about 245 to 250 usd. I know because we bought on today for the "office" But yea... if they do the same job and they look the same, cheaper is better ... so Micolive. I wonder if I can find Micolive in Europe ?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před 4 lety

      Oh that's good that the blimp comes with the dead wombat there! Yeah, from my personal tests and experience, the micolive works just as well and is cheaper, so it's a good way to save some money if you can find one!
