He also sings - very briefly - in “Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison”. Wrt “Thunder Road”, however, a lot of people mistakenly believe that he sings the title song that is heard during the opening credits of the film. That is not his voice.

I've always considered his Max Cady role in "Cape Fear" to be his best work: he played Cady so evil it was palpable. I saw the film when it was first released in 1962; I was probably 10 or 11 at the time. The scene where he confronts Nancy Bowden (actress Lori Martin) across a ping-pong table is chilling; all Mitchum had to do was look at her, take in a large breath, and let it out: pure evil (and without having to spend endless hours lifting weights): he had it in his eyes, his physique and his body language. But the scene in the hotel room with the woman Cady picks up in a bar is one of the most chilling scenes ever filmed, even though the film (1962) was made before the relaxed standards of a few years later. In a wordless demonstration of absolute power, Mitchum's "Cady" communicates to the women exactly what he has in store for her. Today's extreme violence on film can't do it better.
The remake (DeNiro, Nick Nolte, et al) is a very different film: some extreme violence; DeNiro's over-the-top portrayal of Cady; and the Bowden family consisting of three very unlikeable people, including the idiot daughter, masterfully played by the underrated Juliette Lewis). It's a totally watchable film -- including the cameo appearances of Mitchum and Gregory Peck -- but it's not much like the original, and DeNiro's take on Cady, IMHO, cannot match the under-played job of Mitchum's original.
    Thanks for posting this video!

@plasticweapon It's possible that she had the same philosophy as Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, whose husband Edward VII was a philanderer for the ages. (Edward once commented to Lillie Langtry, as he gave her a spectacular diamond-and-emerald necklace: "You know, I've spent enough on you to build a battleship." " And you've spent enough IN me to float one.", Lillie riposted.) Alexandra once commented to her sister: "Bertie may stray regularly; but I am always headquarters. When he needs advice, or comfort, or anything of that sort, it's me that he comes to." The Queen's lack of bitterness was reflected in.her decision, when Edward was on.his deathbed in 1910., to invite his two principal mistresses -- Alice Keppel and Lillie -- to be at his side as he died. Now THAT'S an understanding wife!

I was around 6 years old when my older brother who was 13 way back when, began to talk about Robert Mitchum. We are from the Caribbean so it was a big deal. My brother wrote and asked him for a signed photograph and he got it. Don’t don’t ask me about the details, I don’t know. But he got the photo and lit a fire in my heart about this great actor. Many of us are born into hardship. Mitchum navigated its channels and came out just fine. So many of us do worse. His memory still kindles a fire within me and I’m over 70. Gosh, don’t we all need heroes to look up to so we could just do things right. Nowadays you have to look real hard to find them. God bless you everyone.

It's those actors who programmed humanity's subconcious to smoke. If you start noticing, how smoking was used on all movies, from the era you mentioned, until now, you'll find out what I'm talking about. It's a huge conversation, that requirles, a good ammount of knowledge, otherwise, if just one member, of this conversation, doesn;t have any kind of knowledge about this, then the conversation will either end in seconds, or if the individual, want's to learn, then it may last for days, if not forever. Why that long, well, smoking, will bring out all the parts, that constract the chaos we see today. It's simple though, they jsut turn people to the Devil, trying to sent to Hell, as many people as they can. Who? That's the 1st thing anybody should learn. So if woman are much more tough and strong it only follows it will eventually lead to softer more feminine men. You just cant have two chiefs in the tribe. It just doesn't work. There has to be a leader. And the leader needs to be stronger and show the most strength. I believe God made men to lead. But feminism says no. Very enjoyable video with great quotes, thanks for posting.
An actor friend of mine worked alongside Mitchum and Robert Lansing on an episode of the old Equalizer show. When Mitchum had to go to the restroom once, he stood up and said to them, "Well, gotta go drain the lizard." Cracks me up every time I think of it. Good ole witty Bob Mitchum! And he gives good offhand acting advice thru the quotes you included.

He became loved and my favorite actor when I was 12. A man's man--made Rogue's Gallery. Have made it my business to see nearly all his films. My husband ate breakfast with him at a popular country restaurant in the early 80's when he was filming nearby. (Only because he recognized him and had to convey to Bob how much I loved him...."I know she'd give anything to be here now instead of me." And, yes, I have his autograph on a napkin!!!!) I read that he worked hard to come off as naturally as he did--had a real dedication to acting once he realized this would be his life. Yes, he was known for his barroom brawls--and got kicked out of a Canadian hotel for tearing up the place. He was what he was...and thank goodness for his existence!!!! I have a special birthday cake made for him every year to celebrate his Aug. 6th birthday. So happy this video found me!!!!! Thank you, Age of Vintage!!

In 1949, as a teenager, my Dad joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. His nickname was ‘Mitch’, as he looked SO MUCH like Robert Mitchum! As a result, I always LOVED watching Mitchum onscreen!

Really enjoyed this. Thank you. Would recommend that Mitchum fans read "Baby, I Don't Give A Damn". Excellent biography.

Liam neeson reminds me of him. He could have been his dignified son. Sean Penn's son looklikes him too.

Liam Neeson is a good comparison. Too bad Liam ruined his career by choosing so many dogs for movies in which to star. "Taken" is still one of my faves.

@@johna.4334 The schindler's list will always be his greatest part. He deserved the oscar. He's a good actor and his career is ok. He should play castro really.
