  • Have you ever wanted to purchase lumber online, but was afraid of the quality? It can be worrisome if you don’t hand select your lumber; however, there are some really good companies that provide mail-order lumber that are reliable and trustworthy. I generally use slabs, milled by chainsaw milling enthusiasts in the local area, but in this case I purchased lumber online from Bell Forest Products. I’ve used them in the past and was happy with what they sent me. So recently, Instead of cutting down a slab, I ordered 20 board feet of walnut from them. It cost me about $9bf. Which is typical in my area for good material.
This video shows me unboxing the lumber I received from Bell Forest Products. I have no affiliation with Bell Forest Products and paid for all my lumber. I’m hoping that this video helps you to decide if you want to purchase lumber online.

Woodmizer sawmill owner here. Actual costs (not counting my time to log/saw/stack/dry/etc) are about a nickel a board foot to saw lumber off my farm, another nickel to dry it in my kiln, (1,000bdft dehumidifer type) species doesn't matter. So I have 10 cents/bf in the lumber I use in my shop......walnut, cherry, ash, red/white oak, poplar.

They finally cut down the two black walnut trees in the park. I got some pretty good size limbs from it. 6-10 inches in diameter and 6 burls about 8-10 inches in diameter. I have a lot of milling to do. The trunks went to a friend of mine for his mill. He said when he cuts it he's gonna bring me a few slabs.

@@gottabighit1 Sorry all, just popped up on my notifications. Roddis Lumber sells BW for 8.00. Paxton Lumber and Dakota Premium Hardwoods quoted in the 6.50 range, BUT I dont think you pick your pieces. Roddis Lumber brings the entire stack down off the rack with a forklift and you pick what you want, the forklift driver measures it and writes it on a piece of paper you take back inside and pay for it. Alamo hardwoods is great if you need some exotic extinct type of wood. But everyday walnut, that is not the place to buy it. Also Roddis is S3S so little waste on what you buy.

you always have to go to the exotic supplier and dig yourself to find what will work. Most of the employees at lumber places are just there for a job and have no idea of what to look for and are not woodworkers.

@@NewtonMakes o yes I have done this for just about 50 years and have multiple business accounts that get me product at no less than half the full blown retail market cost as I buy well over 5000 bf per year. Doing this over the years has put me in a VIP so to speak status with the local exotic dealers. It is really sad to see so many online places rake people over the coals and whats worse is the buyers dont even know it as I see the import costs across the exotic playing field and know the mark up.

its too ez for me to call place an order, drive 5 or 15 miles and pick up almost any kind of wood i'm looking for, some stores are retail and I get to pick out my lumber, one I have to pay more to dig out and the last they pull it for me I do not get to pick but they have never let me down.
If I want slabs we have a local sawer or a bunch of them, I can buy alabs off the show floor they are not cheap.
I like to buy rough cut, but if you have a 300lb board 15" wide I can't plane it they can so its worth paying them to do that.
I've yet to buy one. cost too much.
I looked on that webpage seems retail. I don't pay retail prices for wood, and if your selling projects you should not either.
