I have a question I have a Focusright 2i2 fist gen Auido interface I am using a Auido technica atr 2100 over XLR I have to turn the gain way up to get the sound loud enough should I just get a condencer mic?
@@BadKarma714 It's totally normal to use a lot of gain with dynamic microphones. Because these typ of mics have a low sensitivity you need to amplify their signal considerably before recording it. Nothing to worry about ;)
Nice job Andrew - great fundamental topic! One note for those not already aware of a nuance with the Zoom H series of recorders and recording line level signals: The Zoom H series take line level via 1/4". If you do that instead of XLR, you won't have to use the pad to drop the level and you'll bypass the H5's mic preamp which is probably good in this case - best not to go through multiple gain-attenuation stages if you can avoid it.

If anyone's trying to place the music between 3:00 and 4:30, it's the music from the Omni Show podcast! I recognised it and couldn't stop searching through CZcams channels and podcasts until I found it! Great video by the way. Keeping clean levels and not introducing amp noise is key.
Q2 Japan - The mixing board’s job is to turn microphone level signals into line level signals which the amplifiers then turn into speaker level signals! The mixer uses the tone, panning, and level controls to blend the voices and instruments together. Mixing boards have auxiliary or aux sends which allow you to send copies of the signal to other places. For example you might send a snare drum or a vocal to a reverb or delay unit. That is called parallel processing because you’ll use the original sound as well as the processed sound mixed together (they will both go to the main mix). The mixer may also use aux sends as various monitor or stage mixes or they may be in ear monitor (IEM) mixes. Depending on the size and features of the mixing board it may have 0 Aux’s up to maybe 20 or so. It’s common for a 24 - 32 channel board to have maybe 6 or 8 aux sends and possibly more. In live sound it’s common to send a mono aux for an effect and to return into the mixer in stereo. This keeps your aux sends from being used up and reduces how many knobs you have to pay attention to. When I mix my Aux Sends usually look something like 1-4 Monitors (set to Pre-Fader sends) 5 might be Reverb and 6 might be Delay. Those aux sends that are used for effects are typically set to (Post-Fader). The difference in Pre-Fader & Post-Fader sends is the pre fade ignores the position of the fader while the post fade takes the fader into account. This way your effects can remain proportional as you are making adjustments to the singer’s vocal mic fader for instance. Well there’s your crash course and I realize your comment was from like a year ago! Feel free to ask for any clarification!

Thank you very much! This is a really important topic! Especially when the cameraman always wants audio on camera (or you only have a mixer) and you have to switch between pro cameras and dlsr/dslm. Unfortunately I had this situation quite often because some cameramen want to rent out their old audio equipment (living in Germany) which gives me a headache because I somehow have to make it work on set with equipment that is not suitable for this task.
I've always said it, audio is more important than video. Good quality is what you want in both of course but you can have lower quality video and it wont matter near as much as it does with audio. That aside, Thanks for video I learned something!
A bit hard to understand. Can you tell me, what to do if I connect deity d3 pro with a zoom h1n? What should be the gain for talking head videos of microphones put on overhead?
How do I know if my reviver is a line or mic signal? For example the rode wireless go 2 or dji connected to my DSLR. Do you leave the receiver at zero dB and adjust just the transmitter and camera gain to obtain adequate levels? Thanks mate.
