That band was not too good at comping a pop act. What was this? Every single member of the band being allowed a solo at one point???? Poor Benjamin Ingrosso having to try to sing to this. In the end he clearly gave up, and performed it like he usually would, and that worked. But that band...!

I don't think you know what you're talking about mate. The Band is actually pretty good in trying to accompany him, It actually a fresh spin on the song, and they don't do no solos, they actually do musical interventions a lot which in my opinion give something very funky fresh vibe to it and actually sing it as a pack of choirs of pack of brass instrument. The song itself it a pretty hard song if you see something different in his act, but I actually love both his performance (and especially the song) and the band. Not trying to hate on you, peace!

@@krissg9123 Phrase it however you like, mate - but the fact of the matter is they played the song quite different to the original version, which means they didn`t play the song as the audience expected it to be played. I am not claiming the musicians can not play - only that in this case too many of them were playing, and therefore the singing and the back up crashed a little. Had they given some of the sections of the orchestra a little rest, so the back up hadn`t stolen all the focus, this could have been a great interpretation of the song, at the same time as the performance would have been closer to the original version. Some time less is more. You don`t need a full orchestra to give the song a little twist, without at the same time changing the performance completely from what the audience is expecting cause they know the song already. This was too much. Part of it would have worked excellent, if that alone had been the comp. When everything was piled on top of each other the back up stole all the focus, and therefore crashed a little with vocal performance. The latter being the same as it always has been, and how the audience expected it to be.
Short version: Benjamin was singing a pop song - the band was playing big band, and unfortunately those two clashed a little, compared to what it could have been if some sections of the band had had a break, and others alone had had the task of providing Ingrosso with back up. Instead what this was, sound on top of sound, drowning what was special and unique.
That is my opinion, and I am sticking to it.
But I`ll grant you one thing. They were not all trying to play solo, in the sense that they played different tunes each one of them. But they were not playing the tune as close to the original as myself and many others expected. And as I said, it is my claim the performance would have been improved by some sections of the orchestra being toned down a little, so other sections/solo performances which better matched the vocal performance and the original version of the song, would have become more prominent, but at the same time having backed up - and not competed with - the vocal performance.
You can disagree if you like, but I think it is important to present the audience with what they expect to hear, and maybe have been looking forward to hear. Therefore it, in my opinion, is important back up arrangements are played as close to the original version of the song as is possible. This wasn`t.

@@Tvjunkieful12 I completly get you my friend, everybody has his own opinion, as a Vocal Singer myself I would love to sing on a song acommpanied like that, knowing and loving the original song, and I think he went into this with his own acord making his song the way he likes it, atleast I hope so, it a good performance nonetheless, but I also think that the orchestra was trying to "hide" the fact that he's singing on backing track so people woulnd't realize that it not completly a live act and i'm refering to the instrumental, but I also think that was his choice to keep his own track. Cheers. Have a good day.

Kriss G You might be right in that guess. And since Ingrosso sings the song exactly as the original, he probably had an instrumental version of the original in his ear, in addition to his own singing, so he had his back up straight into his ear. That is my guess, anyway, cause I think he would have done his vocals a little more big band style, had he had the orchestra as back up, and not the original. And not the least if he had rehearsed the song with the orchestra. To me this seems like he has gotten there the same day, expecting to do the song as he always does it on tv. But because the orchestra has rehearsed the song from the notes, the two versions clash ever so slightly when being performed together. For tv appearences most often playback or singback is being used to save time and to obtain the best result, since pop stars sometimes can do several tv shows in several countries the same day, and therefore don't have time to arrive early enough for proper soundchecks. Sometimes even have to mime to a recording. I don't think Ingrosso was miming here, do you? I think he was singing, but as he is used to perform Dance you off. But since the orchestra had rehearsed it differently, it ended up clashing a little. That was my impression anyway. I even suspect the conductor of not having heard the original version of the song, only having seen the notes for it. Or that the singer the orchestra used as Ingrosso's stand in during rehearsals, performed the song a lot less as popsong than what Ingrosso does. That is the only explanation I can find to why a song so heavily focused around the singer and the choreography has been given such a quantative musical back up. Brass instruments and disco dance, I find a very unusual combination. And the song is called Dance you off - not Blow you away. Therefore I feel this back up version robs the song of it's core: music, dance and lyrics working together creating a full story. Dance you off is a very sexy song. There is a lot to be said about a brass section, but sexy is not among them - at least not related to disco vibes of the smooth and sensual kind. Therefore I still feel this version to be wrong, in my ears. But not because I think the orchestra is not a top notch orchestra, but because I feel their arrangement for this song doesn't reflect the true nature of the song.
It is nothing wrong with it per se, it just doesn't accurately underlines the mood and lyrics of a disco retro popsong called Dance you off. It is similar to having Fred Astaire tap dancing to a song Michael Jackson would have moonwalked to. It wouldn't really work. Even though Astaire was one of the best tap dancers ever.
I can understand why you, as a singer yourself, would have loved to have as many, and high quality, musicians like this behind you when performing. But I also think, had you had a hit song you performed over and over, and you were to perform it on live tv, you would have preferred the orchestra had adapted themselves to your style of performing and the true identity of the song, instead of making their own interpretation and version.
Thank you for a fun and interesting exchange of views, my friend. Happy Easter!:-)

@@Tvjunkieful12 I would be really surprised if this was not directly planned with Ingrosso himself. Everything seemed planned, even the backing tracks have been edited to fit this specific performance (especially noticable in verse 2 and the following chorus). I absolutely loved it, and I would definitely expect him to do something like this when he has a different band setup and performing on a concept that's not his own. The use of brass to enhance certain melody parts was, to me, exceptional pop backing arrangement. I don't think any party here had any intention of doing the song "as usual". The song doesn't really have any "band" elements, other than synths, bass and electric drums, so using synths and percussion from the track and enhance it with a band version (with some very tasty licks and dynamics) is a perfect choice by the arranger.
And I can't find a better word to describe brass section than "sexy", so we don't see eye to eye on that one ;)
