That is a little bit harsh, isn`t it? Personally I think both this and Mariette`s song to be in a bit of a league of their own in this year`s competition - but to say all the other songs suck, is taking it too far. As much as I neither am a fan of Rolandz left over song from the 50`s, or Martin Almgren`s gospel and country merger, I respect those who prefer those songs to my preferred ones of Ingrosso and Mariette. Despite I think history has proven modern pop songs with outstanding stage shows and/or choreography provides the best winning recipe for Sweden - anyone from Abba and Herreys, to Carola`s wind machines or Loreen`s dancer - not to mention Måns Zelmerløw`s drawn stage companion proves as much. And if we add third and seconds we can add both Eric Saade and Sanna Nielsen to that list too. It is when Sweden break with that proven success recipe things tend to go astray. Like with Anna Bergendal not even qualifying for the final in Oslo, or Malena Ernman`s opera disco not connecting well with the voters in the final in Moscow the year before.
It seems, looking at history, the Eurovision voters who tend to vote for Sweden expect more modern sounding music and great stage shows, compared to many of those who regularly votes for other countries. And when Sweden enters such an entry it usually ends up in the top 3 or top 5. Robin Stjernberg`s 7th being among the more poorer results Sweden has had over the last 10 years.
I am little worried this year could turn into a little bit of a repeat of 2010, when a Mika copy, a song called Keep on Walking and Eric Saade`s Manboy were among the pop songs that stole so many votes of each other, Anna Bergendal with her country ballad emerged the winner - and as I said earlier, didn`t even qualified for the final in Oslo. With songs like Rolandz` 50`s rockabilly and Martin Almgren`s excellently performed gospel and country merger, I fear there is a danger Benjamin Ingrosso, Mariette and the other pop songs will steal so many votes of each other, they will pave the way for either Rolandz or Martin Almgren as a clear winner. But that that success wont necessarily be repeated in Lisbon, because those voters who tend to loyally vote for modern sounding Swedish pop songs with both excellence in stage show and choreography, will not be thrilled with neither Roalndz nor Almgren.
