The Beatles press conference Adelaide 1964

  • It starts with raw film footage of the Beatles arriving at the airport (no audio) and then continues with the press conference itself (with audio!) Ringo is absent due to tonsilitis so Jimmie Nichol has stepped in to play drums. Apologies for the bits where it goes weird. This is from a U-Matic tape which appears to be a copy of a master tape (2 inch??) containing a transfer of the original 16mm film. The person who did the dub from 2 inch to U-Matic has fast-forwarded through some parts (grrr!) so I've slowed down the footage to normal speed as best I can in those areas. It's not perfect however, and the audio quality suffered, so I've inserted audio from another source in those spots. The reel ends with an somewhat eerie comment by John. They would have had the fate of JFK in mind during the discussion.
    UPDATE I have uploaded a new edit with more than two minutes of extra footage thanks to CZcams channel vk3ase!..

      @biancatellington85 Před 5 lety +4

      Galericulus I could not agree with you more! Watching some of those old interviews is cringy and uncomfortable because of the stupid questions. And after only a couple of years, the Beatles attitudes toward these press conferences became so negative, but do you blame them? If you haven’t seen it, look up Paul’s response to being questioned about writing songs about lesbians and prostitutes 🤣. Probably my favorite snarky response ever.

      Not always. In 1972 they kept asking Black Sabbath only about their name, and then only about marijuana; NOTHING about their music, recording, etc. But here, they were excellent, especially the question about how much they rehearse new material. Paul's answer was only valid for recording, but in Barry Miles book The Beatles - a diary: an intimate day by day history, Barry reveals always at least two days rehearsals before every tour.

He's asked a question about composing, and is briefly interrupted by John, and then the same reporter moves on to another question to John without waiting for the answer to his previoius question that Paul was formulating. The Beatles had to have a healthy dose of tolerance for stupid members of the press.

    A few fun facts, Adelaide gave the Beatles the biggest greeting of their entire career with over 300,000 people turning out, around half the city's population at the time...Also the Adelaide concert was never originally planned and only happened because local DJ Bob Francis organised a petition demanding the Beatles come and play. The Beatles (the 3 of them) look like stars here and Jimmy Nicole is their temporary drummer but not really part of the club like Ringo. To his credit the guy never cashed in and wrote a book. Ringo is missed and the circle is not complete. Also they were well aware of the Kennedy assassination at the time and had more than passing concerns of being shot. This would get even worse during 1966.

    Jimmy seems like a decent guy and a good sport. Shy and modest, he seems happy to remain in the background unless he is asked a direct question. But he also appears to be enjoying his very brief time in the spotlight. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like to be plucked seemingly out of nowhere (although he was known around Liverpool as a respected session man) and flown halfway around the world to take the stage with the biggest act in the world. On stage, he was clearly nervous that he'd miss a beat or get something wrong, but he knew the songs and did a very competent job keeping the beat until Ringo was well enough to rejoin the group.

    Great original footage of the Fab Four's Adelaide leg of their only Australian tour, what is so shockingly ironic is at the very end of this footage a reporter at the press conference says to John Lennon.. "You're very aware of what's happening around you now?, and John Lennon ironically replies.. "You ought to be cos you might get shot??" , sadly 16 years later that's exactly what happened to him in New York, unbelievable irony!

    this was VG i enjoyed it - thank you and i thumbed it up! you notice that if it had been any one of the other 3 instead of ringo missing that the show would have been cancelled or postponed. i fear ringo will end up being the last living beatle and noo telling what he may say then? clearly ringo's contributions or even presence isn't required for the show to go on.

TV stations may have the original films or video copies or they may be in the hands of private collectors. National film & sound archive?

    - the crowed of 300,000 people awaiting their arrival in Adelaide, South Australia was the LARGEST anywhere in the entire world;
    -John’s Aunt Mimi, who had relatives in Adelaide, took one look at the crowd, from the plane (she was travelling and planned on seeing her relatives), took one look at the crowd and upon seeing the amount of people, decided to stay on the plane and head straight to Sydney.
    Who are those relatives? Are they still alive? ANYBODY?

    Jimmy: How does it feel to be thrust into The Beatles? Well you know "It's the end" and Do you think Brian Epstein will wave his magic wand and include you as a 5th Beatle or a stand in for Ringo permanently? . He answered that like he was scared to say. Poor Jimmy he should have took the "fill in" as just that and nothing more. I wish he would have said "I'm just here for 8 shows then I'm done. Take it for what it is and Nothing more. I think he was hoping like we all would be but that just made the whole scene that much more devastating for Jimmy.

      During their boat ride through the Amsterdam Canals, they saw a guy wearing some kind of dark blue cape. They liked it so much, they wanted to have one like that. Mal Evans got off the boat and bought the cape from the guy. But since they all wanted to have one, they had copies made in Hong Kong (their next stop). They wore them when they arrived in Sydney, but during their ride on an open truck from the airport to the hotel, the rain washed off the dark blue coulor.
