I was fortunate enough to work with Vaughn and his brother Ronnie.
Growing up with their music from the Midnite days had a very big influence on me.
But to be in the presence of Vaughn (Akae Beka) and to talk to him 1 on 1 has been the most powerful and spiritual experience of my life.

Revisiting Midnite tonight from remembering the song "new life" after talking with my wife about our first child she is bearing, realizing what an impact this band had on me when I used to see them play live every month or two an listened to them daily. 15 years later it is feeling so good to hear them again. I think this is the medicine for me right now 🙏🏽

Listening to this today stirs so many emotions. Was such an upful night. I had so much fun mixing this show as we had so much analog gear at miners foundry outboard gear I knew well and knew we would accomplish the new sound of Akae Beka. I recalled someone during soundcheck telling me he had heard that the Akae Beka sound was a little different than Midnite and I smiled and asked how. He said it was a bit more jazzy and had a lot more effects. I said let me know your thoughts later tonight after the show and he did come by the desk later and asked if we were recording as he would love a copy. I said I was recording and would share it when I got a moment. I was gifted the video by a long time brother and fan of Midnite. So I added the mix to the video and gifted it to the world here on CZcams. So much gratitude for you Arch Angel. You changed my life in so many ways. Thank you for the many lessons you were a giant amongst us. Rastafari liveth.

this is one of the cleanest mixes I have heard of Akae Beka/midnite Live shows...
........A totality of a different feeling of Music yes I have listened to Reggae but Midnite its just different....Word Sound and Power
I was so saddened to hear about Vaughn's passing; a true loss for the music community and the world at large, and most importantly for all those whom he personally touched with the music and the message. I'm sure many on this concert might have been delighted to being treated to a spontaneous hang with Vaughn after the show and the way he loved to hold court on the street, sitting on the curb [or wherever] and just kickin' a vibe.
We met as young men in St. Croix - I was passing by with a group for about 11 days and we met during our last night there - and continued to grow our bond in DC when he and Ronnie moved here. The music took us on different paths and we saw each other less in the last 20 years. I built a family and was on the road for much of the time, as was he. He had that mission that he held so dear. No matter how much time went by we always connected like brothers and the distance always evaporated immediately. I'm proud to call him my friend. R.I.P. beautiful brother.

@@EmpressRosalindVBrown I produced and arranged a song he wrote - it was never released as it was not Roots Reggae and was more aligned with another side Vaughn had...where he wrote these singer-songwriter [almost anthemic] tunes. Some of them even had an R&B tinge to them - and undercurrent that ran even through his Reggae stuff....(there's definitely echoes of R&B in the history of Reggae, especially very early on. These two styles are cousins for sure). I don't want to just air-out Vaughn's tune without his permission, but I know he would love for the world to hear what we did. Through the years he would always remark, "That was a detailed piece of work!!", and I know he was very proud of that session we did at my friend's basement during the DC blizzard of 1996. Look to my CZcams channel. I may try and reach out to his family somehow and see if we let it go....Thank you for your reply!!

Those who felt the music came from all over to witness the incredible energy and sound that emanated from his voice. I and I consider myself blessed to have stood in front of a true lion. Hmmm. This is my mix. I did the sound for this show. The console DID get unplugged because the Foundry still doesn't have a proper twist-locking power supply cable to the Front Of House. Maybe I should sponsor installing it myself. This isn't the first time this has happened...You can hear me adjusting the delay settings when the delay comes back on in it's saved setting. I digress...) I have MANY Midnite mixes from the first time they played the west coast at Sierra Nevada World Music Festival when it was in Angel's Camp,California, and I was the production manager and main stage ("Valley Stage") engineer. They played on the Village stage, which is the smaller one of the 2. Shaggy was on the main with about 35 people in front of him and there was about 4000 people in front of Midnite in an area that comfortably holds half of that. No disrespect to Shaggy, there was just that much of a buzz to see this band we had heard so much about. Thanks to Warren Smith for booking this kind of talent. I was very blessed to have done MANY Midnite and Akea Beka and Deserie shows over the years from my home town of Nevada City to the Belly Up, Aspen Colorado, Ragamuffins Festival at the Bill Graham Civic in SF, the Legends Of Reggae Festival at the Cruise Ship Pavilion in San Diego, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival at both Angels' Camp and Booneville, and of course, Reggae On The River, where I am the engineer for years. I am heart broken over Vaughn's passing. One of my favorite people in the Universe and a true brother. I guess I will have to post some of the files I have for the world to enjoy. Of note: Renegade Productions at River Ranch with the original line up, 2004, Tahoe Biltmore, 2005 with one of my favorite songs, Great Zimbabwe Walls, Truckee Amphitheater, 2005, The Independent, SF, 2005, with a great dissertation of David and Golliath in that version of Jah Is Holy. Some of these will be played on KVMR this Friday, 10/8 at 8:30 PST, (which you can get on the live feed online). Watch for those in the next few days, including this one without the camera sound mixed in for the crowd noise. Jah Bless Vaughn Benjamin. You will be missed my brother.
