Built Vs Bought RWD DRIFT CARS- MST RMX 2.0 VS Sakura D4

  • Is it better to build or buy a rwd RC drift car? In this video we find out. They are both brushless, they both look great, but is it better to go RTR? While Ready to Run might not have as much street cred as a custom build, its certainly easy for beginners. Just add a lipo and you're good to start rd drifting. If you enjoy wrenching as much as sliding, the Sakura is a great platform and much more budget friendly than the likes of Yokomo. Just add the touring car body of your choice along with all the electronics and set up the car the way you want.

    I love building. I bought an HSP chassis (used on offer up) RDR without battery. For $120. Then I bought scale interior parts I converted it to RWD and bought an Amazon HSP chassis (flat) and transferred all the components. Then I bought a yoko gyro. $77 And some rims $26 and tires $16 then I had some plastic lying around I cut them and put them on to help with steering angle. Messed with the placement of all my components. Bought an R34 body painted it and a light kit. $375.98 later it’s exactly how I wanted it to be. I’m getting the hang of drifting it. I’m having lots of fun and I’m becoming addicted to this hobby 😅🎉

      I did the same thing.. then I adjusted the camber, and messed with the gyro slowly until I was content. It honestly took couple of tries and give ups.. I gave up on it like 3x.. but then I was like man it's got to work and I dialed it in good enough for my amateur status... Hope you didn't give up on it . I grabbed the futaba gyro

    I'm not a builder, but have always thought it would be cool to try at some point. Both vehicles look great. There's nothing to he sad about with your custom build if you enjoyed building it. If nothing else, it will be a great platform to really learn about what parts and tunes are good for drifting. You probably learn much more from a "failed" custom build than a pre-built car. At least you have the two to compare against each other so you can tweak your custom build.

    I know what you did. You cheaped out on the servo, and possibly your gyro, as well. Also, what worked best for me, was having the steering speed turned down to where it feels more realistic, the steering dual rate turned down to where you're about 75-85% of full lock, and the gyro sensitivity set to about 53-58%, depending on the surface. Try to invest in a sensored motor and esc, like a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120, and Quicrun 10.5t. Also, definitely get some Yokomo DR-C, or DR-A tires. They work wonders.

    I had the D4 once and it was a pain to tune for drifting over all I really didn’t like it and had to sell it and get the yokomo yd-2s it drift amazing and it was a little more easy to tune than the d4 what I recommend for the d4 is more angle I’m the front and harder tires so it doesn’t grip so much so it can slide around and makes sure to have a sensor motor and esc if you get the sweet point tune for the d4 it would be amazing too! i disagree, the d4 is one of the worst rwd platforms out there and it makes me cringe when people somehow still recommend them over the massively superior d5. the amount of money and tuning required for a d4 is not worth it, especially since it'll never reach the performance of a box stock rmx no matter what you do to it. just avoid them at all cost lmao

    Actually the mst rmx 2.0 is a pretty good rtr chassis out of the box, not that a built chassis is bad but the Sakura d4 is a tricky chassis to tune. From what I heard the Sakura d4 is terrible out of the box and needs a lot of tuning to get right so it's bad for beginners but okay for pros and experienced drivers. I could recommend you the Sakura D5 or D5mr instead since I had a fun experience with it while I was still a little new to this advanced drifting stuff and it's one of the cheapest drift chassis out there. (make sure it's the d5v2 or d5mr) or if u want a good chassis that's extremely versatile go for the reveD RDX but it's pricier than the d5. Yokomo yd2 series is better than the d5 and has tuning potential but it's around the rdx level but the RDX has a prefixed tune as turnbuckles are locked when out of the box but very versatile anyways. It really just depends on what chassis you bought and stuff and whether it's a good chassis or a bad chassis, any chassis can be good with a lot of tuning. (I know this comment is really long but hopefully this can at least let u know about rc drift chassis a little more in general)

Not to mention the electronics that come in it are absolute garbage so the very first thing you will be upgrading will be the Gyro and servo. So in the long run the MST is going to cost you three times more than just building a kit.

    The problem of your custom build is the gyro and servo combo...Just buy a Futaba GYD450 gyro and a ReveD RS-ST servo,your car will drastically improve in handling and maintaining beautiful drifts..

    I feel your pain with the D4 bro, in prettymuch the same place with mine, bit less cash into it but just as bad handling even after hours of fiddling and watching tips n tuning vids, wheel spacers to stop the front binding up, bit less rear toe, and why the hell is the chassis too long to fit any body properly? rear wheels all shoved back in the wheel arches, I mean cmon..

    this looks like an I am 4mins in that the MST was dialed in. the D4 isn't also a fair comparison to the RMX 2.0 in the sense the D4 is a previous Gen behind the RMX in this case

    • @awsstudios
      @awsstudios Před rokem

      second issue your using a spectrum in this test.

    • @awsstudios
      @awsstudios Před rokem

      another issue I am seeing is you haven't tuned the chassis. D4's need to be dialed in extensively and really have alot of adjustability that make the tuning of the car a big part of it. you should have gotten a D5 and dialed that in tbh, especially when you already are using budget electronics it would at least make tuning easier and while it would be not as adjustable it would at least make more sense to compare to a Rmx especially at the price point.

    • @awsstudios
      @awsstudios Před rokem

      also looking into drifting this isn't a particularly easy hobby at definitely a hard and sharp learning curve. like your probably don't even realize it but your RMX is Waaaaaaaaaaayy out of wack from the looks of it your steering in the front is janky and needs to be walked in as the front needs to be able to lead the rear. RC drifting is a culmination of alot of aspects in drifting and unless you have people who can properly tune your chassis and teach you you will be in a difficult rut and have a very bad day. this shouldn't discourage someone though it is alot like skating where you kinda need to really keep pushing the boundaries of what you don't know further and futher away as you learn more and more and while it has a aggressive learning curve it just means this isn't a hobby for everyone and thats pretty cool.

  • @MakPHL
    @MakPHL Před 2 lety

    Few major things id say is that. You didnt get a legit sakura d4. You got a fully alloyed out chinese copy. While this looks great the out box set up is TERRIBLE.
    Another big thing would be gyro placement. Try moving it to the back and see if that helps catching the drifts.
    For tires id try using the ones from the mst.
    Maybe mess with battery placement or atleast just hold it down.

    Pretty sure its just tires bro, those tires obviously had traction issues, you could see the car fail to steer at all on a few attempts and just plow straight on forward.

    • @10thScaleGarage

      I agree, but for some reason I feel like the tires are too soft??? They certainly feel softer than the tires on my MST or any of the tires on my AWD drifters.

    Learn how set up and tune the kit. If you're a complete beginner, go to a hobby shop let them tune your kit then do a comparison video, it's more entertaining and informative that way than just make a comparison without utter knowledge of what you're doing.
