Dry Fly Fishing for Brown Trout! (Creek Fishing)

- Dry Fly fishing with big terrestrials for brown trout is easily one of the most exciting types of fly fishing you can do. Seeing a big wild brown trout come up and take a hopper off of the surface is almost unmatched... even streamer fishing occasionally takes a back seat. In this video Andrew took out a hopper and hit a small local creek in hopes of catching some wild brown trout... and he wasn't disappointed! He even caught his biggest ever fish out of the creek coming in at 20 inches. Hope you enjoy the video!

What a wall hanger of a brown, but thank goodness you let it go, as do we. Another great video, thanks bro.
Yessir! We always catch and release the wild one! Thanks for watching!
Using big stimulators or hoppers is my favorite way to fly fish, trout absolutely hammer them and like you said you don’t need a perfect drift, it’s so much fun!
It is easily one of the most fun ways to fish! Thanks for watching!
You guys have one of the BEST fresh water channels available. Nice job.
Thank you!! Glad you like the videos!
Awesome cicada action! I love how aggressive they are towards cicadas. They definitely do not sip it in gracefully like most other bugs. Very fun to watch!
I know! They definitely tend to explode on the fly rather than sip, which is startling at times. Thanks for watching!
Trout fishing is my favorite. I enjoy your videos,. Wishing I was up north, fishing with u. Thnx
Glad you like the videos!! Thanks for watching!
Dry Fly action, on the hopper. Love it! Great switch up. That one brown was incredible. Great you stuck with him and he was willing to play again after missing him. That was a great fish. Fun to get them on a streamer and all, but a whole different feeling watching them take on top and knowing your can't horse because tippet isn't 1X or 2X. Keep up the great work!
Yeah it's a different ball game for sure!! But a fun one. Thanks for watching!
Wow - beautifully photographed and produced! Another awesome adventure - thank you!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked the video!
Holly cow man!😂😭😭😭 that was one crazy dry fly vid, keep up the great work! Really enjoyed this one!
Thanks man!! Glad you liked it!
Love the video. I just caught 2 brown trout yesterday with dry flies on the Northern branch of the Lamoille River in Belvidere Vermont. So much fun
That's a wonderful video.
I'll come and watch it often.
Thank you!
Very nice man. Beautiful browns
Great job fishing, wonderful fish! Looks like you connected with them pretty good!
Yessir! It was a great afternoon on the water
Best fishing channel I know thanks
Thank you!!
Great video. Love the music.
Thank you!!
Great video! Nice browns! Best part is I now know I'm not the only guy who gets line tangled in anything and everything. That was funny including that. WTG!
Thank you!! I think everybody gets tangled at least a little bit, I usually leave it out but it is fun to include it every now and again! Thanks for watching!
Love the videos keep up,the good work
Appreciate it!
If that was me, it would go something like:
Cast, stuck in a tree...
Cast, stuck in a tree....
Cast, stuck in a tree...
Cast, stuck in a tree..behind....
HAHA that definitely gets better as you fish.. although we still get stuck in plenty of trees! Thanks for watching
Dorset Dumpling you have watched my videos? That sounds just like me 😂😂😂
Haha! Casting on point!
You wouldn't believe how many fish I catch by mostly using bow and arrow casts in these situations. Definitely give the cast a try, if you hit a lot of trees.
Great content as always. That was quite the fish on any river or creek, let alone one that size. Sometimes a little persistence pays off big dividends. Oftentimes, if you miss one like that, you might as well move on, and others they surprise you and will hit again. Loved the tips at the end as well. 👍 Thanks, keep them coming, and God bless! 👍👊🏼🇺🇸
Yeah seeing a nice fish and staying on it can sometimes just be a waste of time! If it is a really nice fish sometimes we'll give them around 15 minutes or so to reset (although that doesn't always work). Thanks for watching!
@@hardmanfishing Yeppers, it doesn't always work, but it's always worth a try! 👍🇺🇸
Awesome, Awesome brown trout. Proud of you. I'm glad and privileged to watch you hone your skills. Come see us in Cherokee NC.
Thank you!! We've definitely improved a ton over the past couple of years!
@@hardmanfishing yes, you both definitely have. 👍👍👍😎🐟🎣
Nice catch, I’ve come close to that 20” mark but haven’t hit it yet here where I am.
That tip at the end is also key! I’ve seen many times flies bouncing on the surface of the water and trout go airborne for them. Keep up the awesome content!
Yep exactly! If you pay attention to how the bugs land on the water you'll see how they struggle at first to fly away. Imitating that erratic action is key!
great fly fishing ~
Thank you!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just picked up my first fly rod (at age 50) and I've been practicing for few days on my dirt road. I believe I'm ready to get out there. Great work man. Nice Browns!
Thank you! I wish you the best of luck when you get out there and fly fish for the first time!
Hope you stuck with it. Years ago I converted to 95% fly fishing only. All types of species.
After years, I finally got myself a small stream setup. Nothing too fancy. Spent a couple bucks, but didn’t go crazy. Grabbed a 5’9” slow 3wt, a decent 3/4 reel and some SA 3wt line. I’ve been using 5wt fast action for a while so I’m excited to slow things down a bit. In Michigan there are just so many little steams and creeks to explore. I’m anxious to get this experience.
Good luck out there man! I wish you the best of luck!
Good tips.
Love your videos guys you've become my favorite trout-fishing channel. If you ever wanted to come fish Virginia cripple Creek in Woodlawn Virginiais a special permit areas like eight or nine dollars a day they stock it three to four times a week through the summer also But too crowded during the weekend for me sometimes crowded during the week but it's five or six miles of stock stream an 2 miles of native brookstream be a good summertime place for y'all to try out some stock trout with heavy pressure it's near Galax Virginia you can find it on the internet
Yessir I've heard of it!! I've never been down to fish it though. But thanks for the compliment! And I'm glad you like the videos!
Soo cool
Thanks!
nice video bro
you guys should have so many more subs!! your vids are incredible!!
Thank you!!
Great vid, you have yourself a stream there...those fish are impressive to me for a small freestone stream. Even that huge one (21"?) looked like a wild fish.
Is this in PA? Jw, didnt think cicadas were coming here till next year.
Nope this is further south! And thanks for watching!
Great stuff! When I saw the title I wondered if you were fishing the Cicida hatch.
Yessir! Have to capitalize on it while we can!
Risen fly hell yeah🤘🏻
Lugar lindo.
Mantap boss 👍👍👍🙏
That stretch where u fished the cicada hatch looks like Deep Creek near Bryson City, NC. That 2nd trout looked to be a rainbow. I rarely see a brown trout jump like that. They stay down mostly.
I caught a brown on a bumblebee fly couple days ago.
That is awesome!!
Nice fish! You could have definitely put a ton more pressure on him with that glass rod even with 6/7x tippet.
What are those boots you are wearing there? They look ideal for trudging around in those conditions
Nice vid! It would be cool if ya used an arrow to show near your fly to we can know where to expect the rise.
I could've done that I guess, I'll keep that in mind for next video. Anyway thanks for watching!
Role cast on tiny streams, straight up Or straight downstream. Or just toss underhanded like I sometimes do🙄😁
I'm back been fishing lately smoking them 🐟
That's awesome man!!
You should let your drag do the job... I don’t know why you’re holding your fly line... I left the fish is pretty small..
What rod specs do you usually use for these creeks? Like rod size and weight?
Hey man. What type of hopper were you fishing?
Awesome man that was fun to watch. Can I ask what the net is called? It's beautiful I want one
It is a catch cam net! Look them up they're awesome nets! Thanks for watching
@@hardmanfishing Awesome I appreciate it, thank you aswell
Today I had a small brown take a real big Chubby Chernobyl
That's awesome!
hey man i am new to fly fishing and i am a bit confused by all the types of line could you explain the main ones you use and why
Well there is fly line, leader, and tippet. Fly line is the bright yellow line and you can either get it in floating or sinking (if you're new just go with floating). Leader is the line between the fly line and the first fly (if you're new and want leader I'd suggest just buying an already made leader). Tippet is the line between your leader and flies. It is usually super thin and nearly invisible so that the fish don't see it.
I noticed you guys use the flies and fly rods a BUNCH....is that because of the water flow in the creeks you're fishing? Or is it because of either preference or spinners/lures wouldn't work as well?🤔 (Still dig the video tho, please don't get me wrong, just wonderin kinda thing.)
Well to be honest spinning rod fishing just got a bit dull. I mean we know we can go out and catch a handful of fish on a spinner but at some point we just like something different. There are also different styles of fishing within fly fishing (dry flies, streamers, nymphing) which all offer their unique challenges. We also enjoy the idea of trying to match the hatch and figure out what fish are eating (such as cicadas in this video) which adds another Layer to the fishing experience. At the end of the day though we love both, and have some spinner fishing videos coming! We just have been enjoying fly fishing a lot recently.
@@hardmanfishing oh, gotcha.....I can understand NOT wanting to do the "same old thing" over and over. Thanks for the info and look forward to the next episodes. ✌😎
What rod are you using? Beautiful thing
Risen Fly ITB 7 foot 6 inch wt
What are your best hopper colors/brands/and Designs??
Honestly man as long as it is made out of foam so it doesn't sink I don't have a particular "favorite" hopper design or brand.
Is that Risen rod and reel? If so what weight is it? Thank you for the video
Yessir! It is a risen ITB 3 wt with a armor reel.
Can’t believe your not playing him from the reel
hey man just wondering what length of a leader you use and tippet
General rule of thumb is use a leader as long as your rod. But honestly where I fish you usually don't need that. I'd say the leader is around 6 feet. The tippet was 4x
Hey bro why is your brother doing most of the fishing you’re school is out isn’t it are is it a work thing don’t know why I’m so curious just wondering because I know what ever it is you would like to be fishing love your video I really like it when you guys fish them streams with spinning gear I really don’t like fishing with a fly rod in that’s probably because I can’t fish with a fly rod but I do a lot of inline spinner fishing rooter tails in joe flys but anyways keep up the great work stay safe out there GOD BLESS
Yeah I have a full time job now and my brother is in School. Although it enables us to make some cooler trips it doesn't allow me to fish nearly as much. Glad you like the videos!
What stream?
What fly was he using?
Grasshopper
ScycoSnake thanks
In what state are you fishing in this video and what state do you base out of please.
What kind of shoes are those? Are they some type of wading shoe?
They're some sort of Hogman shoes I believe, but I wouldn't recommend them.
Hodgman**
Where can I find that net
Somewhere in WV?
You will learn to keep those fish on the reel so there’s no chance of line catching on the handle
You're lucky. Way too many mistakes were made. Lucked out....
Kinda sad how much trash is in the stream at the beginning though.
I agree, I assume it is from people dumping it off of the roadway above.
@@hardmanfishing yeah people just do not think sometimes. If they saw the creek maybe they would think a little more...
don't want u to burn a hole... but generally speaking... where in the world are you fishing:
West Virginia
I am not interested about watching anyone catching fish but just give me the location.🤔
