Fish Rising Everywhere! Dry Fly Fishing - Cayuta Creek, NY

  • After seeing a ton of rising fish in the middle of the day on a drive by this well known southern tier trout stream (Cayuta Creek( decided I wanted to come back to do some dry fly fishing and filming. The stocked trout were actually a little fussy. They had obviously been targeted quite a bit and generally wanted a drag free drift and small fly. I got tons of refusals but as the day went on I get in a rhythm and landed quite a few trout and got a few on film as well!

It's amazing how the camera angle of the takes looks like it could be a 20 incher!
I used to live near dryden...should have checked that place out.

great video for a stocked river , I always smile with the smaller trout always rush and splash to take a fly where as the older bigger trout just slowly sip in down, the smash comes when they feel the hook😉

Another great video. I know Cayuta Creek - fish it when I visit my parents. In fact, the brown I'm holding in my profile picture came out of Cayuta - there are some big browns in that creek!

Hmmm there is a decent but cyclical fishery for salmon/browns/rainbows that can be cast to, I would recommend this guide on Seneca fingerlakesanglingzone.com/

It stays cool for the most part in my experience if flows are sufficient and nightime temps are low but can definitely warm up with low flows and high air temps. Probably best bet in spring and fall...

I never understood why nobody mention the name of waterway. its public area so what's the big deal???? ive been fishing Cayuta(sheppadrs) creek since 1965. What a great local stream for me. Trout population would do better if the pike didn't get in there from spring highwaters .

    • @deaddriftoutdoors2940
      @deaddriftoutdoors2940  Před 2 měsíci

Thanks so much. I rarely mention stream names unless (like this one) it is a well known public resource with stocked fish. As far as I can tell the pressure on this creek drops off after spring and there is more than enough water for everyone and plenty of stocked fish. I don't think my video is going to draw more crowds from far off places or ruin anything haha. Thanks for commenting!

Every river has that one local guy who is head over heels in love with it. Who is out there every chance he gets wading and studying the bugs and learning the lies and night fishing it to see just how big they get in there. The guy just quietly putting in the hours, the years. The guy who will someday know that river like the back of his hand (if he doesn't already).
Even the big name rivers have that guy. Some rivers might even have two or three of those guys. On my river, I am that guy. I'm the only guy. I know I'm the only guy because if there were another guy I'd have definitely met him by now.
My river is not the Cayuta. It easily could be though. There are plenty of similarities. If some CZcamsr did to my river what you just did the Cayuta, he'd sure better hope I never bumped into him there or anywhere else for that matter. In fact, you could burn my river less bad than this like with a road sign or easily recognizable landmark and I'd be pretty hot.
There's maybe a dozen or so rivers in NY that are so storied and famous that the locals who truly love them deep in their soul just have to put up with a certain degree of this stuff. The Cayuta ain't one of them.
And why? You gonna get that many more views than normal for naming it and posting the access map? Was it just laziness so you wouldn't have to worry about keeping landmarks out of the camera angles?
"Oh it's a well-known river and it's mostly just stocked fish." Yeah but there is one guy who might not have the time or money to travel around like you do and that river is what he's got and catching one of the precious few wild fish to be found in there brings him the sort of joy that other anglers in different circumstances could only get on a trip to Alaska or Mongolia or Patagonia or something.
And you just screwed that guy over for no good reason whatsoever.

So I make youtube videos of fishing content. You obviously watch them (you're welcome). I do try to respect the smaller wild trout fisheries and don't name them. This is a well known, well documented (every guide book) stocked trout stream. It is not a destination fishery. They stock this little creek with 11500 trout and I fished the most obvious stretch on the creek. I do not think my youtube video will change anything. I think its safe to say I don't think there will be hoards of people traveling from miles away to catch a bunch of 8-10" stocked trout. I saw at least 20 other people fishing. A few recognized me and were psyched I was filming on "their creek". I actually get people who contact me asking me to fish their home creeks.
It is difficult to find a balance between naming streams and not naming them. People get mad with both, I get nasty comments on how I never name streams, then I name one and I'm ruining some hypothetical guy's life (a little dramatic my friend). Either way I honestly think I strike a good balance. I seriously doubt this video will change anything on this creek. BTW I've never been to Patagonia or Mongolia lol, my farthest trip in the last 6 yrs was Lycoming County PA lol. I work a full time job and make these videos mostly for the nice feedback I get (sometimes I make enough money for gas money and lunch). I spend hours editing and organizing the footage (so I take offense to you calling me lazy).
Luckily the positive feedback outweighs the negative by a large margin or else I would just fish, but then you wouldn't have youtube fishing videos to watch and comment on. Hmmmmm

Jon this muddlerminnow guy sounds like a male Karen. I love your videos and think you do a great job being discreet with your locations. I’m 75 years old and don’t get out fishing as much as I used to so I enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work!

    Muddlerminnow, you are pathetic.
Jon does his homework and puts his time in making videos for people to enjoy.
He creates some of the finest productions on CZcams.
You are correct about one thing…”there is always that one guy”, and apparently you are it.

I rarely do but this creek is hardly a secret and certainly not a destination stream. I don't think I've spoiled it by any means but will take your feedback into consideration.
