About year ago I got XT600E from friend that had drove it multiple times from Finland to southern European countries. It still had "only" about 40tkm's on clock, but had been left unused for like closer to 10 years, but luckily in warm storage. After sorting tons of carburator issues and horribly stuck brakes (I actually had to remove calibers to ride it 20km's to home, unforgettable trip), replacing wheel bearings etc. it's now in pretty damn solid state again and I've began to fall in love with this bike. It's simple, I really like the oil cooling as there's no radiators at all to be afraid at. Good low end torque in tougher terrain. Only thing I wish it had like 10hp's more to push that rear out in fast gravel road riding. T7 I think is going to be my next never bike purchase. But I don't think I'm able to sell that XT anymore. Nice little tractor 🥰
I would recommend waiting a bit, the Kove 450 rally might be what you want as an upgrade from the xt600, but first it ha to prove itself in consumer reports. The xt 600 is an awesome bike in Finland, especially on those neglected forrest roads!
It still boggles the mind that the DR650 is available to this day in the US, yet in their infinite wisdom, Suzuki never saw fit to sell the DR Big in the USA.
Yeah, that's very weird! Also weird that they canned the DR Big after only a few years.

Got a ‘91 BMW Dakar a few years ago…7k miles for $3.7k …fuel injected…65-70 mpg. Just finished Continental Divide trail w/o a hiccup. A bit heavy and 5 speed box only real liabilities…very comfy seat. Easy to ride with a few mods like crash bars, wider pegs, etc.

I love the pictures. I'm in the USA. I have never seen an XTZ660 or a DR Big. I had a 1989 XT600, it was a great bike. My buddy has a DR650, they are good bikes. I had an XR600 for years, it was an awesome dirt bike. I have never ridden the XRL650 but would like to.

I just followed your links to the DRZ400 material, and thought I'd say that I have a rather large and inexperienced friend that got the 400 and I was very impressed with how capable it was in deep woods single track, for a bike that comes with electric start, a street title and a low maintenance schedule. I actually considered looking for one after he went all weekend with us (on off-road bikes) and then road it home, 2 hours away. That push button start is the cats purr, when waiting for a group to negotiate a tough section on a blistering hot day. I know most new bikes have it. But most used bikes don't

I did Cape Town to Nairobi on my old BMW1150GS years ago and yes a great tourer but NOT an easy bike to pick up when you drop it in sand or one of those HUGE potholes in Zimbabwe/Malawi....so changed it for a XT600e...what a nimble bike ,small bike,BIG heart....loads of fun until it was stolen in Malawi....I found myself "bike-less",stuck in the middle of Africa....only to find a KLR gen1,BIG tank for sale,UGLY bike but I bought it only to be blown away by its handling and I am short legged guy,....one of those who has to put the stand out ,climb on the bike then set off....I absolutely loved that KLR and did an incredible trip from Northern Namibia to Nacala in northern Mozambique with NO problems at all.My mates said that I am nuts to travel SOLO through the desert and dirt roads but the KLR was incredible and I would highly recommend this bike.....I am now living in Spain and have been looking for a KLR650 but NADA...so I settled for my second choice ,2002 XT600e with good service history and 43k on the clock ,in my late 60's now but when I ride my XT ,I feel 30 again.

Look into the BMW g650gs Sertao 2012 to 2016 . The Sertao is a new version of the Darar .The sertao get 70 mpg fuel injected , its got the bigger 21 inch spoke wheels . ABS on or off , heated grips standard and a very comfortable seat . You can find them with low miles for between 4,000 to 6,500 dollars . I really like mine . I'm 64 this year and I can take it anywhere I want to go . Like you said in the video the tank is under the seat and the center of gravity is low and its easy to handle off road .

Glad you mentioned the Funduro, being a short bloke (5'7") I find them great. I'm on my second one now with 42,000 mile, I've ridden on the Wales section of the TET and some of Devon and on the Taffy Dakar (now Taffy DWRG due to copy right laws). I wish I was tall enough for the DR Big.
I should have never sold the Funduro. It was a lovely bike and so comfortable on and off-road. Might actually get one again one day. I checked out the Taffy Dakar, sounds like fun! Yeah, a tall bike can be a pain... I have to tip-toe on my XR650L. The ground clearance is great though. Can't you lower the DR750Big? Still a heavy bike, a guess
@@GreaseAndGravel Yep, I liked the one I had for a while, though the fact that it can't stand low rev was too much for me. As far as comfort go, it was perfect. Now that I'm out of the city, I might get one again ! Besides, the Rotax engine is indestructible, you have to go at it with a c chainsaw !
have owned an xt600e for 6 years, cant comment for its long distance ability as ive used it as a workhorse, and can say that the engine is very long living, it will out live the cycle parts by a long way, its no rocket ship, as for the cycle parts keep the swing arm bearings and brake calipers well sorted for starters as they can sieze, also plenty of frame rust under the seat area. leccy starters can also die from time to time as with the solenoid, solenoids are same as fazer 600 so can be got cheap. ive got arthritis in the knees and the xt is no problem to ride for that.

XT660R’s are worth a look , water cooled & fuel injected with the Cam-shafts running properly on roller bearings instead of most in this group with Cams running directly on the cylinder heads, usually the achilles heals of most big singles.
Oh yes, definitely! None of my friends had them at the time, so the XT660Z was the closest. Same great engine! Cheers
Great video. One thing I'll add against the f650 dakar (have had and still have a few) is the pitifully thin wiring that is starting to crumble at this point in age on most of them. Spares are also hard to find and expensive. Upgrade the suspension however and they're fairly unstoppable.
Hi. 38,000 miles on a gen 2 KLR. Crashed several times. I've spent $0 replacing panels. They zip tie together just like a gen 1 bike. They are better than a gen 1 in every useable way except weight. I've ridden mine all over the US loaded with camping gear food and tools and being an 08, it did burn oil until I did a 685 top end. Now it doesn't burn a drop and runs like a top. The worst thing it does is the speedo needle wobbles. I've crashed it in 5 states with nary a whimper.

Thank you for this video, currently I find myself looking for a light and nimble dual sport that also could do sometimes a 50km commute to work. I've did a 35.000km trip(Malaysia to Netherlands) on a klx150 which was great but also lacks a lot of power. I've owned the funduro but the 19" front tire to small and bike itself to heavy for proper trail riding. Also owned the Vstrom 650 which is even heavier and did enjoy it on trail riding until I dropped the bike a few times it was such a pain to pick it up. Now i'm looking at a xt600e but it is a shame the suspension is not adjustable.. the other picks that you show the xr650 looks awesome but is not much available in the south of Spain. Anyway going to have a look at the list you put together, thanks a lot and will subscribe!

hey Whereiswiljen , I also have the xt600e , I installed new new suspension set from Hyperpro ! front and rear springs. you can also adjust the strentgh. make the bike better in so many ways , and also capable of carrying have luggage.. can highly recommend this upgrade !

I've always wanted to own a DR650 but never did. The DR750 was amazing, but old.
I had 2 KTM 640 LC4s and my friend has a duke 649 LC4 right now, so I have some experience with that engine. I would say it is the quickest thumper of the 650 class from that area in stock form, but it vibrates a lot at high rpms (30km at 140 km/h indicated on the highway and I needed a break) and the engines are quite delicate mechanically. Even though I had much fun with the LC4, I would recommend looking somewhere else if you want something trustworthy.
I have a 2004 F650GS. I love it. It’s getting a bit old now and some switches require disassembly and cleaning of the contacts. Follow the maintenance schedule and it just keeps going. General maintenance is a bit more fussy than a Japanese bike, but that doesn’t bother me. Low seat. Excellent fuel range. With the right tires it does back roads easily. Good on the highway as well.
The F650GS Dakar is still one of my all time favourite bikes and I'd get on one and ride through Africa tomorrow if I had the time and money.

The KLR650 is definitely one of the most popular and my personal favorite. Even though it has been discontinued, the release of the latest Yamaha T7, and Triumph Triger 900, have push more second hand KLRs into the wild to be scooped up. Great video man. Thanks for sharing.

@@GreaseAndGravel the spring tension is an issue. But I've been told the breakage was corrected on the 2012 models. It's on my radar regardless.

@@GreaseAndGravel ask someone to show you a failure!? It's more of an internet issue, lol. On the 2022 new model klr, Kawasaki didn't even fix issue because there's not enough evidence of an issue if you will. I've had a klr for 9 years and as reliable as a hammer!!!
@@paulcondie2520 As far as I know, the original doo's issue was that it was spot-welded... but since 2008 it was a one-piece part. My Gen1 didn't have a spring in it when I replaced the doo after only 3000 miles
Just a small side note about the Funduro. The blue one on the photos seems to be an ST, a kind of more 'street oriented' version of the Funduro wich in fact was a bit lower and used an 18" front wheel instead of the 19" equiped on the standard F650
Hey, you are quite right! This one was imported from Japan by the previous owner. Back then I didn't realize there was a difference between the ST and the F650. I see the front fender is also a bit different. Thanks for spotting that and letting me know!
How about the NX 650? basically the XR650L but just a bit more power, I think, and a fairing to compliment. Acerbis makes 23L tanks and most of XR 650L spare parts bolt straight on. like the XR you need to watch the oil level but that's pretty much it along with basic maintanance.
I know this video is over a year old but I've owned a klr650 and a v-strom dl1000 and now a xr650l. Hands down i enjoy the Honda off-road. It is an easy keeper that is way more capable on tight trails than I am. I love the smile factor of the XR650L.
Yep, it is a lot of fun to ride! The KLR is just more versatile if you can only have one bike
The Honda is just a street legal dirt bike so would make sense.
An Xt660R would have been a very natural competitor to have in this video, I'm surprised it's not even mentioned... It's lighter, more powerfull, fuel injected, better brakes and more reliable than a KLR. Plus it doesn't burn oil ;)
Good point! Unfortunately, I have not owned one before and have no friends that have. The XT660Z is pretty close though (albeit more expensive and heavier)

The XT handled better hands down but I guess it's a personal thing...
Individual weight, length, etc is probably a huge factor to take into account comparing these bikes..

I have 2 90' XT600E's. One has 13,000 and other has 25,000. Its my daily ridden bike. Absolutely love it. I have a few more modern bikes but always love to take the yamaha out. Anyone know where to get new pladtics for one of these?
I have owned several KLR650s 1st gen and 2nd gen. And I have owned a DR650. I liked all of them about the same. Which ever you can get the best deal on! 👍🏻🙏🏻😀
i think the xt660z is a pretty good and complete travel bike. i would only change the exhaust for weight reasons because it has that giant silencer under the rear fender and its very heavy and very high up
i personally own a DR650SE from 2000 and i just pulled the engine for the first time at 90.000km because the gearbox is making weird noises. otherwise its the best riding buddy ive ever had and easiest bike ive ever worked on. it doesnt sip a single drop of oil and no matter what happened it always brought me back home (e.g. once i burned my clutch when i tried to do a burnout and i still was able to ride 100km home with a top speed of 35km/h)
stock its not such a great bike but its very easy and cheap to modify for the long trip or whatever you want to do.
bulletproof engine, very good air cooling (even in 38°C riding hard all the time it doesnt overheat if you got a derestricted exhaust), strong frame, big aftermarket.
i could talk hours about the DR. to make it short: i did 2 years of research what would be the best bike for a world trip and ended up buying a DR650
im working at KTM as a mechanic and would never buy one if reliability is important. its not that there are no reliable KTMs but most of them are unreliable and you will never know if the one you buy is the one bike they didnt build on a monday. old KTMs are very unreliable and unrefined and new ones have too much tech and technical problems for long trips so i would stay away from them.
for weekend trips no problem, great, fun bikes but they are not made to eat miles. also depending on where you are it might be hard to source certain parts or you have to wait months to get them. never really had that problem with japanese bikes

Again I know this is a long time after the original post but may be helpful. I own a 2010 DR650SE and have ridden KLR's, T7, 1090 Adventure R, F800GS, etc. Between the KLR and DR the one thing I could never get totally comfortable with was the feel of the front end. I've ridden two, one was well used the other brand new with about 300km on the Odometer, they both felt like the front end wanted to wash out and were slower and more cumbersome than the DR650. I would say the DR is better in the dirt and in the twisties (on road in the tight stuff I was faster on the DR than my Triumph Sprint 955i, running 50/50 tyres on the DR). The KLR is better/more comfortable on the road, you really sit in the KLR like an armchair.

I own a BMW G650GS Sertão, the newer version of Dakar. I really like the machine, it's strong, economic and easy maintenance. It has a water pump seal factory problem, you have to change the seals each 30.000kms but nothing too expensive.
Mine is a 2013 with 66.000 on the mileage. Other problem for off-road riding is when it falls falls the false tank on ground. Not to good falling on it! hahha

Sertao for me. The water pump is indeed the weak point on all bmw 650s, but easily fixed and not as bad as as people say. I've had 4 bmw 650s I have heed bars on mine with mosko bags mounted to them. Saves paint (er plastic) in a dirt nap.
Worth considering is the DRZ400 Suzuki. Lotsa power, good in the off-road, and it's been around awhile! Pack light and leave the wife at home and you'll have an awesome travel bike. Needs a bigger tank; several are available. Seat is about as wide as a 2x4 and about as comfortable, so take lots of breaks!

Hi from SA & thanks for the question. There is not much difference ito power, but both are super reliable. KLR is liquid cooled and only has one carb. XT has a dual carb setup, which I personally don’t like (potentially more to worry about). I loved my KLR C model, but my friend loved his XT600E. I’d take both for a spin and let the overall condition guide my choice. Both are awesome, reliable bikes. One thing: find out whether the KLR’s doohikey has been upgraded. Cheers

Lighter, Smaller, less powerfull but very manageable. Achiless heel is only E start. It's hard to push start. One can install kick from earlier XT's

Late answer but XT's oil cooling is quite good benefit too. No radiators to crash in terrain.
KTM 690 Enduro without a doubt. The G650 X Challenge is also a much better contender than the F650.
You mentioned about the kawasaki Klr650 doohichey most do. But you forgot to tell people about the two guide plates made out of steel with a plastic guide. Usually when the counter balancer chain gets loose due to worn parts, you also have to inspect the guides( the plastic piece, the steel part.)This is not a good location to have a piece of steel to break. Also the counter balancer chain can stretch to the point that if you have a doohichey installed, will it will not take all the slack off the chain, causing the chain to flap on the guide causing premature wearing on the guides
. My point, don't just install a doohichey, check the guides, check the chain for stretching, replace parts as necessary to avoid future problems.
100% I never knew what it looks like in there until a mechanic friend of mine showed me and explained about the plastic/rubber on the sprockets
Well done. Bikes are subjective I suppose. Seating and swear by 80/30 tires, My first bike was a Honda xl 650 and a taxi crosses my path and flew thi to a utility pole. Broke my helmet in 2 and in hospital for 5 weeks. Toronto Honda staff and mechanics saw it Monday mor I g and all agreed that who ever was riding this, died. It saved me. Winner of the Baja 19 out of 20 races and no wonder why. Never thought I could recover but got on the bike again as they say but this time with a BMW and have appreciated their network through Mexico, Costa Roca, East and West Coast; have my old smile on my face since riding and thank Honda for that.

All the BMW 650 Dakar, Funduro,X are Rotax powered which equals well engineered reliability and are faultless, the Yamaha 660s are the best all around, the KLR Gen2 was brought out to be a all-rounder and the fairing gives less drag/less fuel use on the road, but yes fix the doohickey always!!, all dealers lie about them to this day and it's still not fixed!!, as is the oil control ring position at assembly, that's what burns the oil!!, I have a 2013, and use quality oil and coolant my oil use is minimal.
The GS 650 was to quick to for me but the looks of the Dakar was so nice I still love it but it's hard to get a good one, mine had almost 90. 000 kilometers, really good, it started to pop out of 1st gear, so I sold it, also the wiring is really bad, watch out for the 2000/2003 model, now the xr600e that I have is way better

Yeah, my friend and his wife toured a large part of Namibia with us on their trust old XT600E. Great bike! If I get a BMW again, I'd go for the old carb'd Funduro again. It was a great bike.

Does nothing great but everything good. You can ride it single track it to riding it loaded up cross country. Not sure most of the bikes on this list are that versatile.

I'm late to the video but you asked about the DR650. First of all, I think you got the KLR and DAKAR weights turned around, wet weights: KLR650 456lb - DAKAR650 425lb = DAKAR 31lb lighter. Now for the DR650 (pre '96) 366lbs = 90lb lighter! I owned a 2013 KLR650 very briefly. After dropping it twice I decided that lowering would be wasted on me. Bye bye KLR! The non-running DAKAR that I bought has an even taller (aftermarket Saddleman) seat. I have yet to get the info on a lower or OEM seat, or the info on lowering the suspension. I have a '95 DR650 which I can barely ride. I was a dummy and bought it on impulse confusing it with the '96 and newer that can be easily lowered. IMO, the DR650 and f/g650gs appear to be the best choices. The DRZ400SM with DP tires seems to be another very good option, except that I, too, am very frugal.
I’ve only rode a XR650L.... but I got to say it’s a beast of a bike & can take me anywhere....I’m just not good enough to ride it anywhere ☹️
I own an XR650L now and I agree, it will go anywhere these bikes will go and further... I am also definitely the limiting factor 😅 At least as we get more experienced, the bike will still be capable.
With enough seat time you will get there..rock the XR!

The best second-hand adventure bike is the bike you can afford that is available in your market.
I bought an F650GS 800 twin with 100,00K and it's been the best adventure bike I've ever owned.
It came with crash bars, luggage racks, bar risers, headlight protector, driving lights, skid plate, Barkbusters, Scottoiler, spare air and oil filters, new brakes, new chain, recent service, decent tyres.
Paid NZD$4,750 - equivalent to USD$2,900
There are probably more capable off-road bikes, but for me this is the best because it's the bike I could afford and the one I bought.

The DR650 & KlR650 are super popular in Australia 🇦🇺, personally I have not owned either but have a lot of mates that do . Basically the DR is better off road - probably more like your XT500 and the KLR better on road . A mate has a 640 KTM and yes has had some reliably issues. I actually own a SWM 650 Superdual 2017 model it’s got 17,000kns on it now but I have had some issues with it and actually looking at getting a XT660 R ( as I’m short and it’s lighter than the Z Darker version. Also considering the Aprilla Pegaso 650 ( the newer one it also runs the XT660 engine ( but only 19 inch front wheel ) but forks are the same dimantor as the SWM so if I put the front forks and wheel on it would give me a 21 inch front wheel and 210 mm of front travel instead of 170 . Plus the Aprilla is only 170kg wet . But the dash can play up the them , iv had one before.
Thanks for the info from Australia! The 660 XT motor is awesome (love the EFI!). If I can find a good second-hand one I'd buy an XT660Z today (the 660R needs some farkles before longer trips), but people aren't getting rid of them.
I saw you had a DRZ400... would you get one again? Does it feel a lot lighter than the 650s? And the SWM... I don't know those at all. How was it? And what issues did you have? I see they are available here in SA too.
@@GreaseAndGravel Hi yes the DRZ 400E are a fantastic reliable old bike , they are getting pretty dated now . I would replace one with a SWM RS 500 ( better everything ) but not sure 🤔 of VERY long term reliability ? , all Italian bikes have there quarks. My Superdual has been a fantastic bike ( more like an enduro than a ADV bike ) also long term uncertain 🤨. All depends on what you what to do . Check out my Utube channel were I’m riding for around 17 minutes and talk about the bike. Bike is out of action at present due to a dealer stuff up in servicing the bike ( long story ) I’m just looking at an XT to hold me over until my Superdual is repaired

Hi Kobus! Any of the Japanese 650s or a BMW 650 should be a good buy. Condition of the bike is probably more important than the brand. At R30k, you'll have to shop around a bit... but it is possible. Let me know what you get!

I owned a 2018 KTM 690 Adventure. I was not crazy about it. The possibility does exist that I maybe had too high expectations of it, but I sold it within a year. The vibration on the handlebar was torture and the seat was incredibly hard. The first gear was too tall (or fast) for single trail riding, and the sixth gear was too short for open road or highway speeds. The engine would be screaming when you get to 130km/h and it was taxing to ride. Did not enjoy it. The power to weight ratio is good and it accelerates like a bat out of hell, but as an adventure bike, you'd have to spend about R30k to R40k on it to fix a lot of issues. Not worth it

Hi@@MrChristoKruger . My vriend het 'n 2003 XT600e gehad (op die foto in hierdie video se thumbnail). Hy weeg meer as 100kg en hy en sy vrou het saam met ons getoer (met bagasie) vir twee weke deur Namibie. Ons het nie gejaag nie, maar hy kon maklik 100kph ry. Dit is 'n uitstekende fiets.
