    I have to say as someone who has flown lots of drones I disagree with the idea of starting with low price toy drones. The higher end drones are so much easier to fly. Better stabilization, lower latency, longer range, better safety features, more power to handle wind. All those things can allow for new pilots to easily practice.

      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety

      Thanks - much appreciated! Indeed, though, you can crop in pretty easily to reduce the FOV slightly. Alternatively as soon as you add a bit of speed, the props disappear. Not at all ideal for slow filming (without cropping), but fine for anything with some movement.

    Love this drone. Yes, I've had a slew of self built and RFT drones, but there is no comparison. This is a polished and amazing product worth every penny, at least for me. Even for a beginner, you'll really have to try hard to crash this in normal mode. Yes, if you try hard enough you will, but just like driving a car, don't take unnecessary chances. When you consider you are getting a set of $600 goggles and a $200 controller, the drone is really not so expensive.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      Sadly, still unlocked in manual mode yet. The update on launch day only added sport mode. But in sport mode it’s pretty similar to airplane stick. But yeah, really looking forward to seeing how they implement manual mode. Could be a game changer.

    • @RindoRob
      @RindoRob Před 3 lety

      @@Dcrainmaker one step closer! Yeah I really think a manual mode FPV like this would that type of joystick controller could be a game changer in terms of "fly feel".
      Btw, did you notice the simulator feeling pretty similar to real life flying? I'm wondering if you get used to the simulator and obstacle proximity if you will be pretty good at gauging your distance between obstacles or if there is still some learning curve going into the real life thing.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      @@RindoRob I'm still a bit mixed on the simulator closeness in manual mode. I think it's close, but I also think for whatever reason I tend to suck at flying in simulators more than real life. • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Robert! Indeed, the portability isn't super ideal. Somewhat funny story: Typically I never use the DJI bags/cases that come in the Fly More kits. Yet this time was literally the first time ever I was like "Huh, a case would actually be useful", due to the awkward nature of it. But no case came with it. Great review. I really think they've missed the mark with this one as it fills a gap that nobody wants to be in. It's not a good cinematic drone, not a racing drone, not as versatile as a cinematic gopro setup on a fpv drone, and MOST importantly it's not durable enough. Almost every review seen so far the reviewers (who are seasoned pilots) have snapped the arms off, and expensive arms they are. Fortunately DJI are kings of evolutionary design, and without a doubt their next FPV offering will be gold.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +3

      I agree they may have landed sorta in the middle, but I don't think it's too bad. I think this does appeal to people who were considering a higher end Cinewhoop, but didn't really want to deal with all the 'baggage' of FPV (batteries namely, but also some DIY aspects)...and of course, have more money. Whereas, I think the gap is mostly around lack of features people expect from a DJI drone in 2020/2021 around intelligent flight modes - especially kinda silly stuff like the common orbit or dronie style shots that people part b-roll from.

  • @Ondatra

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety

      Identical to any other quad, once you’ve unlocked the secondary manual mod, so for a roll both sticks to the outside, and then throttle accordingly.
      Technically you can also swap to two other modes, (mode 1/2/3), but I prefer minimizing the ways I can kill something on one sitting.

      They've actually gotten better in the last year or two with drones getting modest firmware updates, but nothing major. However, on the FPV goggle side they do oddly have a slightly bigger history of sending updates (like the 50Mbps update) than they do on the consumer devices.

    Ray let me tell you I have been into racing/freestyle drones way before I got into fitness (and hence following you) and you did an amazing job in this review and in the flying. Personally this drone is not for me as you mentioned way heavier than I expect and way way way weaker as I am used to crashing doing 90 mph and be able to recover my drone and fly again with pretty much just a new set of props.

    The most amazing thing about drones and the speed that tech advances is that by the time we get to Skydio 6, it will like be as fast as this and will fly pretty much flawlessly 100% on it's own.

    Great overview. I'm guessing the new remote works with existing DJI air units?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety

      Hmm, that's actually an interesting question. There's lots of quirks right now in compatibility. For example, in audience mode the DJI FPV v1 goggles won't connect yet to it. And other things like the Smart Controller don't use OccuSync 3.0. For the Air Units, I didn't see explicit mention of those one way or the other. They obviously connect with the FPV v2 goggles, which are clearly O3, so I'd presume there's some backwards compatibility in the controller too. Anyway, all ask...

    Ray, you suggested that, at this price, it would make a poor choice for a first fpv drone for a beginner. So, without spending extra money on a cheaper drone first, would practicing on DJI's Virtual Flight App. make anyone skillful enough? Any thoughts? Thanks for the great review!

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +4

      I think so. If you practiced fully in there (with a real control), to the point of using manual mode for probably 15-20 hours or so and got comfortable with controlled manual flight, then I think you could make the switch. Otherwise, I'd start off with things like pre-built Whoop drones (such as the toy racer one), and then build up from there.

      As a professional FPV pilot, I’ve learned that doing around 30-40 hours on the simulator(Liftoff) with the DJI FPV Remote allowed me to comfortably transfer over to flying the real thing. The simulator is almost exactly like the real thing. If you can fly and land in the simulator, you’d be set for the real deal.

  • @ellisstate
    @ellisstate Před 3 lety +1

    I can see how version II if this would have a basic front facing camera, and then a 360 main camera.
    Basically pilot the drone without worrying too much about framing the shot, then go back and set the focus points in post.
    Then you could essentially solve all the smart shot issues without having to put all sorts of avoidance sensors that quite frankly ruin the whole experience of squeezing through tight spots.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      Indeed. Semi similar to what Insta360 was proposing with their DJI Mavic mod system. I’m not sure if they ever ended up shipping that, but cool concept in theory. I think execution really needed to be internal like you said though.

    • @ellisstate
      @ellisstate Před 3 lety

      @@Dcrainmaker theoretically, you could put (4) lenses on each side and go completely without any kind of gimbal at all. Build the lenses directly into the frame, or even by the motors on each arm.
