Geo dome with only one triangle frame.

  • Someone asked me the other day if it was possible to build a dome that only had one size triangle frame, it is possible but I had to cheat a bit and design a dome with two mirror image triangle frames. They are technically the same size so I reckon it counts. The sphere has 120 frames which I think is the maximum you can have with only one frame shape. A 2v dome has 40 triangle frames of two types, this dome has 60 frames all the same. If you want plans for this drop a comment below.

"Only one triangle frame". Key to a manufactured solution! Domes as a mass-produced Housing solution require a low math variational solution. Dodecahedrons are all the same 'plate'. When edge length exceed 5' the 'v's kick in and everything starts multiplying, vertex angles, edge angles, edge lengths, requiring every new size to have a complete face-by-face mathematical solution. This is a barrier to mass produced geodesic dome spaces.

There is one other way to get a door into that dome. In the arrangement that lets you cut it straight in half, just build straight rectangular walls to lift the whole thing up by the height of the door. You could then have essentially a cylindrical wall around the base and a dome roof.

You can stellate a dodekahedron quite easily. Just snap a A4-paper in half diagonally. That's EXACTLY half of the triangle you need. Make two to make a triangle. Make 5 triangles into a pentagon and create a dodecahedron: there you are.. VERY easy to make a model this way. You can also use an A5 (half a4) or A7 (Quarter of A4) if you don't have enough A4 paper. You need 30 triangles. It's basically what he is showing. But I did the measurement math for you, so you don't have to.

Doing research before build a dome home. This or a 2V dome with extra supporting members in each panel. By what you have shown a standard 4 by 8 foot sheet of plywood could be cut diagonally to cover the frame.

It's possible to make a one triangle geodesic dome using the class II subdivision on a V2 frequency dome in a different way. Its an adaptation of the basic triacon that is presented on the video called "full triacon". It is made with the same triangle used in the video, but it's mirrored on the longer side of the right angle to make one face of the triacon (just like the "door" made in the last part of the video). With only two diferent sides it's a very simple dome to make, and the base can be made by cuting these triangles in half (witch is the same as using the original triangle). So it would have a total of 32 triangles (or 30, since it's 28 full and 4 halfs). It's good for small domes, maybe less than 8 meters diameter, but for big domes the triangle becomes too big, witch can be very hard to handle. You can use the calculator on acidome.ru to get the angles to project one using frq. 2, class II, and I think in this case the "cross" symetry works better. (Link: acidome.ru/lab/calc/#1/2_Class_II_Piped_D100_2V_R2_beams_50x25 ).
