    The V2 Ascaso DUO Steel seems like a home run, PID, preinfusion, unlimited steam, more power and customizability than the original but where does this machine compromise? The comprehensive review for the Ascaso Duo espresso machine is here.
    In this video, I'll walk you through the strengths and soft spots of this machine and help you decide if this is the best for your kitchen and your coffee.
    As of right now the Duo Plus model is EU only, as is the steam handle upgrade kit.

    I sort of unknowingly bought this. I knew I wanted an Ascaso machine for a few years and I finally bit the bullet. When it came around Christmas last year I noticed it looked a bit different from what I remembered and I didn’t realize until watching this video that it was the v2😂 I absolutely love it. I’ve been a barista for seven years so bringing all that experience and preference to a home machine can be intimidating especially when you spend as much as you do on one. This did not disappoint. I had tempered expectations and I was ready to loosen my standards on what my espresso would taste like but this really didn’t let me down in any area. It feels great to use. Looks great. I love showing it off when we have people over. And best of all I have the best coffee every morning, afternoon, and night thanks to this amazing machine. Ascaso really cares about the products they make and I’m thankful for my machine every day.

    FYI: Please note that this 20Amp issue is only because you are 110v in the US. The EU which uses 220-240v a single standard outlet is more than sufficient. EG: Max 'single' outlet in UK is 13Amps_hense 13a x 230v = 2990 watts max. In US 20a x 110v = 2200 watts so the normal 15Amp outlets would not provide the sufficient capacity at max 1650 watts. The ASCASO DUO reqs approx 2100 watts to run both thermocoils.
    This is also true why electric kettles are more popular over here (in UK) due to their fast boil times/higher power reqs. It would take x2 the time to boil in the US even using a 20A outlet as most kettles are 2000-3000-ish watts draw.

    One thing I really enjoy and nobody talk about is the fact that you can change the steam temperature. Lower temperature equal less power, and this is pretty useful when you want to steam a little amount of milk in a small pitcher. For exemple I steam 60ml of milk in a 200ml pitcher for a cortado and I don't have to spill milk everywhere. That's a nice feature.

    • @DaddyGotCoffee

    I've been using this for almost a year now. I absolutely love it! Power hasn't been an issue since it's 240V here in Europe. I agree that volumetric programming issue is annoying, I rather just weigh each shot and go by what my scale tells me.
    Another (small) thing I wish I could do is exchange the steaming knob with the lever from the Baby T. To me, that lever looks just as good and controls the power of the steam wand a lot better than the knob.

    I bought this machine after a lot of research and have been using it for 6 months. My thoughts to potential buyers...
    1) Overall, there is no machine which matches performance, features and price with my styling and speed (fast) preferences
    2) the first machine I was sold was a grey import with a 3 pin adapter - it blew my RCD every time I switched it on. Maybe a fault on the machine but I sent it back and replaced it with a machine which had been converted to run on 230v and with a 3-pin (I am in UK), it now works perfectly.
    3) my only gripe is vibration - it is strong. This means that the integrated cup warmer (don't think this is mentioned in review) cannot really be used as cups rattle too much. Also, smaller cups can shift whilst pulling a shot - so a coffee scale with rubber mat is necessary.

      It’s not crazy expensive but it’s still expensive! Don’t rush on this, keep saving. Technology is always improving and costs dropping. I'm not a student anymore, but I have the same issue. I'm on a barista express + niche, and the niche definitely broke the budget.

      @@DaddyGotCoffee FYI - There is the Ascaso Dream PID and for someone that does not quite have the money - the Dream PID (which I have) does everything this machine does with the exception of instant steam. It only takes a minute for the steam to produce. I usually ramp up the steam as I fill my pitcher with milk and get my cup and thermometer ready. For the difference in money you can not beat it, and it is a beautiful machine. I have been using mine now for almost 4 years, so it does hold up.

      I got around the supply problem by buying just the walnut wood handle piece and carefully shaving off the end with the hole at a very steep angle (leaving a slight notch for the handle to align with the thickness of the existing round walnut knob) and attached it with the cut surface going almost completely across the diameter of the face of the circular round knob. It's permanently glued on and looks very professional, matching perfectly with the round knob. It reminds me of a wooden oven knob in shape but only with a joystick handle sticking up. LOVE IT!!! Hint: I got it aligned first with a hot glue gun to make sure I got the on/off angle right and then used wood glue. SUPER DOABLE!@@DaddyGotCoffee

    I laughed when you informed us of the Duo Plus because I never feel satisfied when I order new expensive items like this. Also completely agree with Ascaso’s scaling issue. When paying $1700 for a machine, I would like to at least get it within a week maybe 2 not 2+ months for order date. Also the Error message issue has me scared, I’ll try to think positively, but sometimes I just have that type of bad luck…
    Anywho great review! My takeaways were:
    - I’m glad I ordered it in Black because I know I’ll like this machine whenever it arrives
    - This machine looks daunting as hell and what have I gotten myself into lol 😅 I say this because I have absolutely no barista or espresso machine knowledge and while yes, I can learn… I am struggling to find a good tutorial resource or guide on this machine. I am considering buying this Steel Duo after watching your videos. But one thing concerns me a lot is why they ship with a 14g basket instead of the standard 18g basket?? I saw from the other CZcamsr reviewing Steel Uno saying that it is likely because the machine is a bit under power to pull a 36g coffee, the temperature right out of the portafilter spout fluctuates more than it should. Have you experienced any difference between using a 14g vs. 18g basket? Thanks again.

      How difficult is this machine to descale? I'm currently using spring water on a Flair 58 because that's what my gf likes to drink and we use a water delivery service. Scale is not really a concern on the Flair but I know it will be something of note on a pump machine. I may end up having to use different water.
      How difficult is post shot cleanup? My Flair 58 is the only espresso machine I've owned and I have the ability to press the group head water through the puck so that the top of the puck screen is dry. How do you handle the excess water above the puck after a shot? Does that just get dumped out into the drip tray? Is it a non issue?

Hopefully, the steam power isn't an issue, but common Ascaso, bring all the versions of the Baby T to the US market not just the flagship!

    Morning! Most would say this is not an upgrade over my more expensive Profitec Pro 500 with flow control (fellow Canadian) but I am thinking of making the switch. Any thoughts? I guess my only hesitation is Sprometheus saying he can't get light roasts to stop tasting sour without running them as ristrettos. I notice you use Pilot so mostly medium-light - what has been your experience? The other point is that the E61 is simple and I wonder if the Duo would feel like I'm fighting the automation by holding a switch down. Thanks for reviewing and your time!

      I can’t speak to Spros personal taste experience, however I have tested these machines extensively with a Scace II and thermocouple and can confirm that they are incredibly temperature stable. The way he ran that test had several flaws and is not representative of real world performance - I can elaborate but it will move into geek out territory 🤣

    I've had the machine now for about 3 months. I use it daily. The only 2 things I've noticed from the QA standpoint is that the OPV valve did whine when tripped when I adjusted the pressure down from the 11bar that it's set to at the factory. I lowered it to about 9. There was an audible whine/whistle (there's other videos that state this) but this is also part of a break-in from what I read elsewhere. It wasnt annoying enough to worry about and it's all but gone away in the 3 months I've used it.
    The error code, at least my encounters with it are when I forget that it's on or turn it on to preheat it and dont get back to it for over an hour. I work in tech, so my default of turning it off and resetting it has fixed it every single time. Generally when this happens it seems that it's a heat issue and the PID /controler ciricuitry shuts itself off and displays the error when the machine gets too warm. The top has been very hot to touch when I've experienced that. To avoid it I simply put the autoshutoff at 30 mins and I dont have the issue.
    Outside of that, I've not had any issues. The thing just seems to work great. I've been keeping on top of keeping it clean. I rinse the reservoir out every week and do a backflush cleaning every other week. Daily backflush rinsing, and the drip tray is rinsed daily as well. Even with daily use and using the bottomless portafilter, the thing still looks brand new.
    For consistency the programming I dont tend to use because of the opv plumbing, there does seem to be a bit of a consistency issue that seems to vary from 5-10g. If it's within 5g I see that as perfectly workable.

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Great feedback! I would agree with all of this! I don't tend to use the volumetrics either but as long as you are not hitting off the OPV ceiling they tend to be pretty good.
      I have changed my recommendation away from setting the OPV at 9 bar. I now recommend to keep it at 11 and manage your puck prep/grind so that it tops out at 9 and then declines. The machine is much happier when being run this way. I go into more detail in my "Best Ascaso Settings" video but I'd encourage you to give it a try!

    • @DGPHolyHandgrenade
      @DGPHolyHandgrenade Před 7 měsíci

      @@DaddyGotCoffee I'll give it a try, but I find I have a harder time with consistency puck prep wise trying to just control pressure with the puck. But yes, If you're good with this, then the volumentric is the way to go you can almost "set it and forget it" for the bean/grind you're using once you get that dialed in. It really is the backflow from the opv that will affect the volumetic measurements the most.

    • @DGPHolyHandgrenade
      @DGPHolyHandgrenade Před 7 měsíci

      I did wind up getting a lot more consistent in my puck prep. In fact the last week in a row the only variance in the volumetric programming was 0.1g+- 20g in with 45g out. Puck prep and consistency is absolutely paramount to having the volumetric programming work as intended/expected. I did screw up and rush one and it was about 4.5g over this morning after having a very consistent 0.1g variance. YMMV of course.
      BTW: I took your advice and cranked the opv up to 11bar. Puck prep is consistently getting between 9 and 9.5bar. This is also key to having the volumetric measurements actually work. consistent puck prep and not having any backflow from the OPV.

    I’m curious about you using the Duo on your 15amp outlet. How was the machine able to operate correctly without a problem? I don’t know if I feel comfortable trying to use it, but is there something i can buy that would allow me to safely operate it?

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I’d really consult an electrician on this, and I believe building code varies region to region. Where I live (I believe) electrical code states that a “safe” load on a circuit is only 80% of the actual rated load. So a “rated” load for 15a circuit is 12a in reality. Anything higher needs to be bumped to a 20a circuit. So it’s possible that the “real” load is something like 14a, which is an unsafe load for a 15a circuit, but technically possible without blowing the circuit. I should get a voltmeter and test because the question comes up often just having done it personally doesn’t bring a ton of clarity.

    • @paolocoletti3424
      @paolocoletti3424 Před 2 měsíci

      I disagree. The circuit can draw 100% safely. If your entire kitchen is on a single 20Amp circuit just be aware of other appliances on at the same time as the machine. And not that it doesn't actually pull 20Amps just more than your normal 15. If you are at all nervous you can halve the draw by not brewing AND steaming at the same time! Brew and then steam. Logical really.....

      A couple thoughts, not every creator does this, but in addition to being better for transparency (imo), these on camera disclosures are required by the FTC.
      Regarding the machine being compensation, at a certain point there is no value in “another espresso machine” for someone who reviews espresso equipment 🤣. For me, accepting espresso machines to review is work and isn’t actually very valuable to me otherwise, aside from being fun. I don’t sell them because I like to have the option for future content, but I do loan them out to friends and family. So in that regard, I personally don’t consider it a form of compensation, especially when I get direct compensation from other avenues that has meaningful value. If a machine IS compensation, it’s not very good compensation, especially when you have something like the Baby T on your counter 🤣. Regardless, I’ll always say on camera so you can make your own opinion. If I don’t say anything about it going back, it’s not going back and that is true in this case as well, unless they one day ask for it to be shipped back for some reason!

The difference is that metal (block) is a more efficient heat conductor than air and more thermally stable. So as the element kicks on and off the block will maintain consistent temps.

    Wow, at 6:52, where did you get the "marble" accents for your portafilter handle and Niche? They're gorgeous! ... almost as gorgeous as you. ♥ ...but stop biting your fingernails!

    The machine looks beautiful but I see no advantage against a Lelit Elisabeth.

      Like everywhere the differences are in the details. For example the Steel is ready in 3 min vs the Elisabeth on 20. The shot programming on the steel is volumetric and not time based like on the Elisabeth. The quality of the portafilter in the steel is stainless steel with wood handle and knob while the Elisabeth has plastic handle and plastic steam knob. The steel can be descaled externally while any boiler ideally needs to be taken out and immersed in descale solution. Of course all these benefits come with a large increase in price.

      👆👆 Also, in North America the Elizabeth is practically the same price as the Duo. Some people will prefer a boiler solution and that’s fine, the duo offers other advantages/features

      @@DaddyGotCoffeeoh I didn’t know that. In Europe the price difference is significantly higher.

      @@NilsBruch yeah North Americans pay a lot more for Lelits compared to the rest of the world. It may have something to do with modifications needed for their line to work on 120v, not sure. Definitely changes the value equation for North Americans

      @NilsBruch tyour so right. The warm-up time alone is a deal-breaker for me on most units and absolutely every boiler. I ended up settling for a Bambino plus because of the virtual instantaneous ready time for either Brewing or steaming or going back and forth within seconds. Anything in excess of 5 minutes or a minute back and forth is a deal-breaker for me deal breaker for me. I'm not going to wait 20 minutes and then spend another 10 minutes making two drinks. If I get a fancy or coffee though waiting 10 minutes for this group head to warm up wouldn't be a big deal

      Ironically I find the nicer machines are more friendly to new users than basic entry level ones.
      But, I just released a video on the best way to set up these machines and dial in a shot - czcams.com/video/Mc7Z3uzpWDY/video.htmlsi=WXXXk85iALcqIPgr
