- The late Ann West (1929-1999) holds her own against supporters of Myra Hindley on a BBC phone-in show. Ann was the mother 10 year old Lesley Ann Downey, the youngest murder victim of Hindley and Ian Brady.
Here she argues against Lord Longford, Hindley's sister Maureen, and journalist Ian Fowler.
This is one of the most shocking things I’ve seen on CZcams. How dare they treat Ann West like this? Despicable behaviour.
I know they're so dismissive, patronising and callous towards Ann for fuck's sake the woman lost her child in horrifically violent circumstances, she had to see and hear her last moments of what was done to her and she gets treated badly by every self righteous arsehole's who think they know better!
This is absolutely disgusting. Ann West is being treated like she’s on trial and being ostracised for speaking the truth. Utterly shameful attitudes from everyone defending Hindley, a woman who lured innocent children to their deaths. My heart will forever ache for Mrs West and what she endured until her death ❤️

I cant believe that this, almost a character assassination of poor Ann west was allowed to go ahead and be televised. she did not say that Ian Brady didn't do anything she said she only heard myras voice over the audio. Its shocking how she was treated its bad enough she lost a child in horrifically violent circumstances but she spent over 30 years campaigning to keep Hindley behind bars and the fear and stress she must have felt that Hindley could possibly be released. Lord Longford said to Ann that unless she forgives Hindley she won't go to heaven.and be with Lesley! That's a callous thing to say to a mother who lost her child at the hands of two vile sex offenders and murderers and Ann stayed dignified and replied to him "ok then Lord Longford I'll go where you're going" and she had every right to call him a supercilious cunt for that comment!
Ann and Lesley are finally reunited in heaven.

Who are these fools who deny the fact that Brady and Hindley, abducted, tortured and murdered? There is no way B and H should ever have been considered for parole. They both died in prison, as was right. Mrs West, and all those close to the victims, have been tortured ever since the murders. RIP children and those close to them.

I'm so sorry about your son my younger brother who I practically raised died two years ago at twenty five after a life of fighting cystic fibrosis I couldn't imagine the pain of having a loved one took in such a cruel way by another vile human being.

Her supporters on this footage played down and normalised the gravity of Hindleys crimes just as much as she did at the time!
Her dared they belittle Anne west and all she had to go through at the time “and did for every day of her remaining life”
It was actually all the Home Secretaries over the years that kept Hindley alive till age 60, had she’d been freed after 10-12 years after her crimes she would have lasted barely months...
It was an exceptional case for the era, and there was no doubt of Hindleys involvement, the fact she showed no maternal feelings toward Lesley Anne in particular is chilling.
And as for being controlled by Brady.....
She could have easily left on a train somewhere then spilled the beans on him to the police...
It was obvious that she was cunning and devious, and she played as big a part as Brady in luring children to their deaths.

Maureen was a good person, but couldn’t resist believing she could have her sister back, I don’t hate Maureen or (fully) blame her for how she handled things. Maureen also said she hated Myra after getting her jailed. Remember this was before psychopathy was well understood.
I wish Maureen had seen through Myra, and had tried to make things right with Ann West.

I always remember my father (who normally sat quiet watching TV, or sat quietly reading his paper or library book, but after seeing Longford on TV, the next day my father said "did you see that bloody silly old sod Longford on tv last night, trying to get her released", then he repeated his first words saying "that silly old sod".
I feel so sorry for her mother, having to go through these offensive questions when she is grieving over her dead daughter.

I sometimes wonder if David and Maureen were involved all along. The couples were spending so much time together. She keeps defending Myra even after all the hate her and David got from their community.
No way, they were not part of it, David helped them under the threat of death. Maureen was foolish but wasn’t a bad person, she was badly affected by losing Myra, (caring about her before the arrest) losing David for a while, losing her mum for a while too. And in the 60’s and 70’s there were few books and no CZcams to explain how psychopaths act.

I always thought Smith and Maureen had nothing to do with it and thought Smith was a genuine man but iv just finished reading Ann Wests son Terry's book that he has written and he is convinced that Maureen and Smith were involved in more of the murders. He said there were 4 voices that cud be heard on the Lesley tape that his mum had to listen to and he recalls a strange remark that David Smith made to him whilst visiting the family. So I dont know wat to believe now after reading his book

@vaimende the tapes have never been released for public to hear, only the transcripts are available online so I don't know wat to believe. I know Ann West said it was only Myras voice she cud hear but on the transcripts there's also a male voice must be Bradys so how did Ann not hear him? Obviously she wud have probably not been taking a lot in as it wud have been distressing for her to listen to her daughter on them. But the son did say in his book that his mother was convinced that Maureen and David were there too
Judge me all you like for what I'm about to say, quite honestly it doesn't make me want to not say it or take it back. Hindley should have been let out of jail, in an empty Street, with all the parents of those poor children and let the parents serve justice.

I wish the UK brought it back too. But in this case it worked out for the best since they didn’t confess to killing Pauline and Keith until 1985, leading to Pauline’s body being found in 1987.

How did Ann keep so calm here with what happened to her daughter and the attacks coming at her. Hindley on that tape was heard saying to Lesley “Shut up or I will hit you one again,” Also when B&H we’re locked up she sent a letter to Brady de-coded it read - Why don’t you throw acid on Brett ?. That was Lesley brother, even behind bars they were getting their kicks out of cruelty to children.

It amazes me that stating facts is "treating Ann badly" per the comments.
Maureen was assaulted by Ann while 9 months pregnant. Even years later Ann acts proud that she did this... telling Maureen she should be dead. Naturally she isn't going to have empathy for a woman who tried to kill her own baby.
As for the journalist he was simply calling out Ann for her lies. Ann lied about the tape only having Myra on it. Ian was on the tape and she led people to believe he wasn't. When called out she then tries to backtrack and say the part she heard only had Myra's voice.
Ann also lied about other things. She crashed Maureen's funeral with another victim's relative and they assaulted an innocent woman because they thought she "looked" like Myra. Both were then assaulted by the family of the innocent woman and thrown out of the funeral. Ann lied to the papers and stated that she looked Myra in the eyes. The prison, home secretary and police all went on record to state Myra wasn't at the funeral. But Ann couldn't bare to admit she had lied.
She also slandered David Smith until the day she died. Had it not been for Smith and Maureen the murders would have continued and Ann would never have been able to bury her child.

An audio recording of her ten year old daughter screaming in pain and pleading for her life, and you think it is perfectly reasonable to assume that Ann was sitting there totally indifferent, only half listening and wondering what to have for dinner that night?

What actually amazes and disturbs me, is that you cite Ann West's assault on Maureen and the girl she thought was Hindley at the funeral - which resulted in no lasting damage whatsoever - and state it like its terrible... yet the torture and DEATH of Ann Wests daughter becomes frivolous and incidental and somehow deserved for these extremely inconsequential events.

It didn't. What it DID do was condemn a woman for assaulting an innocent woman who was 9 months pregnant.
It also condemned her for trying to destroy the life of the very man who STOPPED the murders and made it possible for her daughter to receive a proper burial.
It also condemned her for assaulting ANOTHER innocent woman (while crashing the funeral of the FIRST innocent woman she assaulted) and then LYING to the media when she was called out for it.
I also condemned her for LYING about the facts of the case, including what the journalist in this video called her out for. She tried to state Brady wasn't on the tape. He was but for years she told anyone who would listen that it was only Myra. When called out she lied again, saying she never said that (she had many times).
She also neglected her living children and at one point tried to drop them off at a government agency unless they "gave her money for Leslie". Her son wrote about her mentall illness in his book.
He wrote about how he believes she vandalized her own daughter's grave so she could blame her granddaughter. When that didn't work she decided to go to the media and say it was Hindley supporters (receiving a nice paycheck for the story).
That you would dismiss all of these things simply because her daughter was a victim carries the same logic that a family member of ANY murder victim can assault innocent strangers, lie profusely, neglect her children, destroy a hero's life and profit off the murder.
Ann West was mad with grief to hear your daughter begging and pleading for her life on tapes can NeVER ever be right! It can never go away with emotional pain! It is just a bit depressed it's absolute torture and emotional trauma. I am not saying what Ann did to Maureen was right but it's certainly understandable even David Smith agreed with Ann.

I don't know where you got that info but David was still denying her lies on his deathbed. Ann knew assaulting a pregnant woman who helped put a stop to the murders was a bad look so she needed to make David and Maureen look bad. So she lied and said David showed up at her house and made jokes about Leslie and her brother.
Ann's own son discusses her drug addiction in his book. He describes how she neglected her children and how she depended on the tabloids for money to buy her drugs.
For God's sake she was writing to Ian Brady, telling him things that made HIM think SHE was too insane to even speak with hence he cut off all contact and declined her visiting orders.
