Salomon Genesis is the real deal. I haven’t reached for the Speedgoats since my pair of Genesis arrived from Running Fanatic in Latvia last Fall. Only the Speedland GS:TAM rivals the Genesis for longer-hauls in the High Country. Happy trails! Snow is finally starting to melt.
Has the Genesis held up well regarding durability? I heard there were some concerns with how soft the foam was.
@@ConversationalPace I have about 300 miles in mine, mostly on snow. There has been some unSalomon S/Lab creasing in the midsole but it hasn’t bottomed out. The outsole has held up well and the lugs provide noticeably more traction in slippery conditions than the Pulsar line. The fit is the best ever for me in any Salomon as they seem to have used a larger last. Can’t say enough good things about this shoe! Along with the Naked T/r it’s my trail shoe of ‘22.
This is the review I have been waiting for--thank you. Your comparison of these two shoes, from real world miles, provides great insight and help as I decide which shoe to buy next. I started trail running years ago and Salomon was my only consideration, until I eventually branched out to Hoka, Saucony and ASICS. Once the Ultra Glide came out, I gave it a shot and loved it. I ran a few 50mi and 50K races in the UG1, on mildly tech terrain, ran with confidence and stability and loved every step. Based on this comparison video, and considering the sale price of the UG1, I'm adding another pair of the UG1 to my rotation. Many thanks again!

Great review, really enjoying the added footage of shoes in use and close ups on the different shoes. I have enjoyed the UG 1's but was curious about the UG max. I love the Pulsar trails too. Much firmer than the Glides, but also know that the glides and pulsar are built on different lasts, but too firm for me to want for a longer ultra. The Glides are based on Salomon's road last, wider. I do love the quality of Salomon's, as a 160lb guy I easily get 5-600 miles out of their shoes before they are too broken down for running. Never have I had a failure in materials, unlike some other brands.
I do like the comparison reviews when comparing two similar models either same brand or similar purpose shoes.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching! That Glide Max TR might be worth trying out if you are looking for even a bit more cushion than the Ultra Glide 2. That does come at the sacrifice of some protection, so depending on where you're running, it may or may not be worth it.
Glide Max TR is for hikers, casual walkers, heavier people, people who care more about comfort than performance, etc. Huge segment of the market.
It's also a great dirt road shoe for more mellow miles. FWIW, I think everyone should have a shoe in their rotation that is more about comfort than performance😅
I picked the UG1 on sale (about $85 US) and am really enjoying them. They have about 150km (95mi) on them so far, including a 50km in the mountains with 2500m (>8000ft) of vert on some highly technical terrain. I haven't seen the cushion bottom out yet, and I'm 6'3 and 180lbs. Fingers crossed they keep on trucking; it's currently out of the UG1, Saucony Xodus Ultra, or La Sportiva Akasha 2 for CCC later this year.
That's a beefy 50k! All 3 of those shoes could be great for CCC. All really similar actually. Maybe depending on weather one would get the edge over the other, but for the most part, whatever is the most comfortable and you feel best in will be the right choice
I have enjoyed the Genesis as much as any other shoe to date. The width, softness yet stability makes this shoe a dream for me personally. Hope You both get a chance to try yourself . Enjoyed the comparison discussion !

The Ultra Glide 1 was a great shoe for 100 miles or so, then it flattened like a pancake that was run over by a large truck. Squish never returned. I stuck mine in a shoe recycling bin in Chamonix after losing hope around 150 miles.

Really enjoyed this format! I had a pair of Ultra Glide 1’s and had the outsole detach under the mid foot around 150km of road and buffed trail. Any concerns for durability in the 2’s?
Oh wow, really?? I haven't heard of that happening to anyone before. I didn't see any signs of that happening in the 2. I wonder if the pair you had was just an unlucky manufacturing defect. Does happen from time to time. Has that been a problem with any other shoes you have worn?
@@ConversationalPace Never had this happen before, and Salomon just replaced them for me, but have had two warranty replacements for Peregrine 12’s due to uppers tearing at 150km’s and a warranty on a pair of Mafate Speed 4’s for the toe bumper + overlays unsticking 😅 As far as I know I’m not a particularly heavy footed runner, just seem to break shoes… Really enjoyed the Ultra Glides as a door to trail. Sounds like I fit very similar to Finn in width at a US13/UK12. Didn’t expect to ever have a Salomon work for me; hearing about the S/Lab last made a lot of sense
Salomon has definitely been trying hard to make shoes that have a more 'american' fit, without sacrificing the Salomon feel. I like seeing the innovation and risk taking regarding stepping out of their comfort zone! If you live in a warm climate, don't leave your shoes in the car or exposed to hot temps, as that can degrade the glues. Or perhaps you just run really hard!
I can see the GlideMax as a direct (wannabe?)-competitor to trails shoes like the Trabuco Max2, I think Salomon is throwing different lasts and the same EnergyFoam at a dart board to see what sticks, but it strikes me that a LOT of their trail offerings are just competing with each other. Passing on both; had the UG1, and it just blistered my big toes anytime I went over 5 miles in them. (Sadly).
I agree I think Salomon is willing to cannibalize a bit of their own sales to see which direction the US market is leaning towards. Thanks for watching!
2’s are nice, my first Salomon that I’ve enjoyed. Xodus cushion tho is real different than this. I can see myself wearing these for casual town outings to running on rolling terrain and some tech trails. Xodus I wouldn’t want to walk around in, but love them on tech trails like heil or hall ranch. This has a firm midsole to a degree but I kinda like that about it. Not too squishy or bouncy either. And yes Salomon has its style and color schemes down. Hoka should take note…Tecton 2 color ways are full on “Romper Room” Colors and it’s just plain ridiculous lol.
That's a great way to describe the Ultra Glide cushioning. Agreed, It's a shoe I could wear a little more casually than the Xodus. Hoka is just trying to get as many eyes as possible to gravitate towards their products!😅
I had a couple comments on the Ultra Glide 1, which I have 160miles in: First is that, along with the Sense Ride 4, I sized down from US13M to 12.5, as they both run way longer than any previous Salomon S-Lab shoes in years past, switching out insoles in both shoes as well to adjust fit. Second is that the UG1 cushion feels like it is going flat, and I don't feel enthused to put them on now. At 180lbs, you'd think the Glide Max would be for me, but I sense no interest in that either -- I suspect it would be even more unexciting and slow than the UG1. The Sense Ride 4 was a very good shoe for me (220miles) I just wish the midsole was a tad softer. Still looking for a goldilox shoe that is stable enough for tech terrain, rolls well, and doesn't shock my bones on impact on longer runs.
Have you tried the Topo Ultraventure or MTN Racer? Both of those are well cushioned, but not mushy, and also provide decent protection
@@ConversationalPace I do have both mtnr2 & uv3 (discount code from a local sponsored athlete). After 60mi in mtn2, I do like them but haven't gone long, being a little leery of the cushion (I see the new MTNR3 will have a higher stack, which strikes me as the same situation as these two Salomon shoes, it could make it worse). The uv3 feels too unwieldy to call it a running shoe, and the poor outsole grip puzzles me, it looks lovely but I don't know what it's good for...
I have the Solomon speedcross 5. I had to change the insoles because I got blisters from the original insoles. The shoes are amazing but are very heavy. Do definitely looking for a lighter shoe. I am just scared about blistering.
Either the Glide Max TR or the Ultra Glide 2 will have a more forgiving fit than the Speedcross. The speedcross does have better grip lockdown, but depending on the type of trails you are taking these shoes on, the Glide Max or Ultra Glide might be good options to try out.
I have problem with glide maxtr when running downhill for some times i got blisters on Rt big toe even the room on the front is quite roomy. The rest i like it
I've gotten that issue with some shoes as well. I figure it has to be something with the rocker (or lack thereof) with the shoe and how my big toe works (or doesn't work) with the shoe. Sometimes people get blisters on higher stack shoes where the foam wraps up around the sides of the foot slightly like a bucket seat.
hello, I'm from Indonesia, I want to ask, I once read a CZcams comment about Ultra Glide 2, it said that if the shoes get wet, is it difficult to dry them? please answer
I don't believe that to be very true. The Ultra Glide 2 has a moderately breathable upper, and dries out in a normal amount of time. Perhaps they were referring to the waterproof version of this shoe, as in that case would take longer to dry out if the inside got wet. Hope this helps!
Both of these are on Sierra for $59.99. I'm a 8.5 in the Asics Trabuco Max 2 and a size 9 in the Nike Zegama so unsure what size to order. I'm looking for a max cushion shoe. Great video and blessings! For about the same price they also have the Altra Lone Peak 7 and Altra Provision 6? I've never tried these brands but I'm interested in them. Great video on this shoe sirs!
I remember the Glide Max TR fitting closer to the Zegama, and the Ultra Glide 2 fitting just a hair bigger. I had my regular 10 in both, and while the Ultra Glide was a little longer, it definitely wasn't too long. I've always been one to opt for the slightly longer between the 2 sizes because I just can't stand my toes mashing against the front of the shoes

Would you buy the TR? They are on sale but everyone saying they creak.
I thought they were comfortable, but just lacked protection under the forefoot, which was a bit of a dealbreaker for me. I'd consider if they were on mega sale for like 80 or 90 bucks
