And this is how they should open the Emmy’s.
I second this idea
Omg. They have to now! They can’t do it any other way!
Yes
PERIOD!!!!!
YES INDEED
They NEED to let the musical happen; it sounds so good.
right?? I'm obsessed with "Creatures of the Night"!
They reveal the plot summaries in the episode section for upcoming episodes. The show may still happen, but it must be to catch the killer.
I want to see this made up musical so bad!
Yes! I want one of the episodes to just be the entire musical!
They will definitely reveal the culprit on the opening night. It's going to be an interactive and musical 🥰😍🤩
Not sure about anyone else, but seeing the anxiety Charles had with this song in an earlier episode made this performance extremely satisfying.
Exactly what makes this scene even more exhilarating and satisfying. 🥹
Agreeable
Yes! I was so proud of Charles when he nailed it!
so are the whole crew, looked at their face, it really feels like all of them still have the trauma of the white room Charles
Right?!?
Even at 78 almost 40 years on from little shop Steve Martin still got it when it comes to musical. He stole the show then and now
❤️
He's my favorite character…. It may sound weird but in terms of awkwardness , I am him, which is why I love his character.
Hard agree!
He’s really got to be one of the best alive right now. I knew he was in a bluegrass band (they’re great live BTW) but musical theatre too? Sheesh! He has it all!
@@kathleendoodles698 there is something about old talent, just can’t get enough.
Steve Martin better get an Emmy for this performance!!! Outstanding!!
He better.
And Meryl Streep for her whole performance in the series
Two, one for acting and one for producing.
Maybe a Tony too, if this thing actually goes to Broadway. Yah, I know I am dream-talking.
@@aneesashariffdefo
His body language during this number is also incredible. He perfectly conveys how nervous Charles is while trying to remember the words. It’s that combination of stiffness with bursts of animation that speaks to the soul of everyone who loves singing patter songs but struggles with memorizing lyrics (okay, maybe that ‘everyone’ is just me).
The constant looking downwards too.
Im also convinced Jason Veasey (Jonathan) is genuinely laughing at Steve Martin’s silly acting.
@@toodleselnoodos6738 yeah I wonder / want to believe that this was the first time the rest of the cast heard Steve Martin do the full song. So the actors' reactions are their actual first-time reactions
@@toodleselnoodos6738 He's looking downward because he's looking at the notes on his pult, though, since it the sitzprobe.
@@countluke2334 I thought that was obvious when I mentioned the looking down, lol
The way (when) he breathes throughout also helps convey a great dimension of the character...it would be wrong (professionally speaking), but works perfectly for this moment with this character...and I sense that Martin does it deliberately.
Please add the writers to the description. Amazing use of alliteration, rhyme, tongue twisters all while telling a three-act story. What a song!
Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman, and Scott Wittman
Wow! Just Wow!
Cant get over!
AND what else I love about this scene is how ALL the characters are paying attention to Charles. They're INTO his performance. Which is really what makes this scene come alive!!! It FEELS real!!!
Of course they were into it, they were expecting him to go to the White Room 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
They are acting… heard of it?
Hahahahaha... Why yes. I'm a director. Clearly you didn't understand my comment. Ah well...
Feels like they were in awe of a classic Steve Martin performance rather than acting in a show
We really need this musical on a real stage or at least the album with the whole musical. It's too good
Steve Martin is incredible
I totally agree - I want to see this musical come to life....but only with Steve as the constable! (Or Matthew Broderick 🤣)
I am so excited for a musical that even real…. They can't toy with my feelings; the musical needs to happen.
YES PLEASE WE NEED THE OFFICIAL CAST RECORDING !!
As a special 3hr musical in-between seasons...
The official cast recording has been released on youtube! Amazing music!
Somebody may’ve killed Ben Glenroy but in these three minutes and twenty-two seconds, Steve Martin killed this!
Also Detective Williams vibing was everything I've missed her!
Yes!!! That’s part of why I loved the tv version better!! All the intricacies going on added to the excitement of it! 💕
I rolled out of bed today yelling "What if NONE of the Pickwick triplets did it!"
Yep! My husband and I both do it 😂
Love how all the actors in the background are clearly not acting and just enjoying Steve Martin in action. Masterful performance.
Right?! 😂 I noticed that too. It looks to genuine to me. Like, they're really chilling and impressed and just taking it all in.
I guess every person in the world instinctively knows that if you have the rare fortune to be on stage while Steve Martin is also on the same stage, you chill and take it all in :)
I'm sure they enjoyed themselves, but don't forget that in character, Charles hasn't exactly been a star performer, so they went from acting nervous that he wouldn't even get through the song to being surprised and excited that he's killing it
lol he's just lip syncing
@@V-visionyou're right, but there are details showing it's not "just" acting.
This episode was phenomenal and Steve killed it here, omg! I can't get this song out of my head. I've been humming it all day at work 😂 We need this to be a real musical, please! Even if it's a Hulu special presentation or something 😭
Agreed! I couldn't get it out of my head either!
Join the club!! Almost everyday I catch myself humming this!😂
I concur!!! I wan to see this musical! Hulu, are you listening?
Yep-becomes a Broadway hit and then it becomes a movie!
Yup, sang it all day today!
finallyyy it's released!! very well done, Steve Martin 👏 my jaw dropped the first time i saw it on OMITB. it was the perfect drop after those white room buildups. an absolute masterpiece. and whoever wrote the lyrics, genius 👏👏
It was a collaboration between the greatest showman, waitress & dear Evan Hansen
And LaLaLand
Anyone else get goosebumps at the bit where he sings “What if none of the pitwick triplets did it”. Like something about the part the way he sings it is so good
Me too! I think part of it is the music change from one intense melody to a slower, more urgent pace with emphasis.
"So quick as a whip, gotta pick which Pickwick triplet did it" is the most satisfying line in this whole thing.
For me, it's "WHO'D HAVE HAD A MENACING MOTIVE AND HID IT?"
“COULD PACO’S PASSION PROVE APOCALYPTIC?!”
I half suspect that the other actors on the stage weren't directed at all for this scene, and we're seeing their genuine reaction to Steve's performance. Johnathan is especially enjoying it.
That's exactly what I thought too!
Yep. Just watch Steve Martin and be amazed.
I've been told that the writers of that song wrote it especially 4 Streep!
The piano "rift" in that song matches to some degree the piano played in their intro.
Canonically they're all innocent, why wouldn't they enjoy their lead just absolutely nailing it? He was finally bringing the production together
We need this on a real stage
❤️
Agree 💯💯💯
They should be on this ridiculous musical. Now I would spend my hard earned money to fly to New York to see it.
Steve will HAVE to do it at the Emmys. We will riot if he doesn’t !
was that cg
I loved how the police and the investigator were the loudest cheering Charles on. “That’s how you do it!”.😊
It's the arms flailing for me. So cute 😂
(plus, earlier in the season Oliver asked him: "what are you doing with your arms?!")
Those are his inspector Clouseau interrogation arms.
Okay, now we need Meryl’s second nanny song!
Genuine chills.
Absolutely ❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's on spotify!
yAAA OMAYGADD IT WAS SO AMAZING
That song is beautiful
Steve really out did himself this season. He nailed the song. The score was amazing!!! The directing. All people involved this season need to win awards.
I've never been more proud of a fictional tv character in my entire life. Nailed it!
I love the parts of this show that seem to be added just so that Steve Martin can be the hilarious and original comedian he is. In the first season where he's in the wheelchair drugged out of his mind and imagines he gets up and makes a long meaningful speech to Jan, only to realize he's mumbling gibberish and everyone's looking at him like he's crazy. Then the white room incidents. President McKinley the fish. And this song.
The elevator scene was amazing. "Where'd you get a qualaude"?
That was incredible!!!! Steve Martin deserves a million Emmys for this performance.
If this is not an actual musical yet it needs to be. I'm really hoping that at the end of the season they announce that it is going to be on Broadway. The songs we've gotten from Steve and Meryl are earworms that just cover so many emotions. This one gets me pumped and Streep's gives me goosebumps. Best season of only murders in the building yet!
It won't be and isn't feasible, but it would be fun!
it takes a lot to get to Broadway and *stay* on. Like, a lot. but this would be cute as a one-off live performance with the original cast, maybe for charity (and filmed too).
@@maggiec83 That’s fine, it could be one of Oliver Putnam’s famous off-off-off-Broadway productions! 😜
When this song happened in the episode, I just bounced off and started cheering for Charles with so much joy! This was undoubtedly the best episode in this season.
Same!!
✋✋✋
To sing our national anthem, please welcome the star of CBS’ Brazzos and host of the Only Murders in the Building podcast, CHARLES HADEN SAVAGE!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Loving the reactions of the young people sitting behind him!
They were loving it so much and getting paid, tool
They seem so genuine, was that their real reaction?
@@keplerscat28 I'm sure it was real! After all, it was an impressive performance!
“A diaper full of Criminal Intent” is a great line.
My favorite part is how genuine everyone behind Steve Martin looked! It looked like if everyone hadn't heard him before and this was the first run like in the actual run of show. Amazing job!!
GIVE THIS MAN A AWARD !
The lyrics to this song are one of the most ingenious things I've ever heard
All of his horrendous rehearsals made me Literally laugh out loud. I love love this show bc of the mix of generations and how gut bustingly funny it can be
Death Rattle Dazzle 😂 I was laughing my head off when he announced it on the show. But now ... I actually really want to watch the whole production! I woke up with this song in my head the other morning-so catchy. SO Oliver Putnam!
I have a feeling this will be remembered as one of the great Steve Martin moments
detective Williams forgot she was working for a second! lol I love the cast
The smile on Charles's face after he nails the first verse is adorable
I just watched the episode on Friday and for the last 2 days I've been just randomly, out loud, singing the line "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did it?" If I'm not singing, I'm humming it. Then I laugh. This song has literally put me in a good mood all weekend.
Absolute same😂
I love how everyone goes from nervous for him to proud of him, that’s including me. This performance was phenomenal.
Finished the season months ago and this song still stays in my head. It’s too good.
This man is such an incredible talent -- which of course we all knew. But this made me appreciate him in a whole new way. This is one of those "earwworm" that sticks in your head and won't leave. So funny!
...incredible talent
Song was written by Pasek & Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen, Greatest Showman) and Shaiman & Whitman (Hairspray, Rogers the Musical, Sister Act)
i didn't expect this season to be a musical season but they made it very believable and smooth story-telling. i hate when people suddenly jump out of nowhere and sing like 75% the length of the show.
These lyrics are just... beyond. I need this to be a real-life musical now.
I love the detective haha "Yes! That's how you do it!" , love her character, was so happy when she walked on the scene haha
I am on my near fiftieth time playing this video within a span of two weeks. This performance is sparkling and delightful with how adroit Steve Martin is with his tone, pitch, and characterization. What an absolute joy to have this performance recorded for all time. Love, love, love it!
I agree 1,000 percent! I can’t stop watching it. A true Broadway showstopper.
Someone needs to start a comment diary like in the Angel Beats op video
I feel you, I just can't stop. it's soooo good!
Please make Steve do the Emmys opening with this song. It's been stuck in my head for the past 2 weeks!
Very dumb that he was snubbed this year
Is there anything Steve Martin can't do incredibly well? He writes fantastic plays, books, his music, books, musicals. Just someone who makes the world a better, brighter place. OMITB is just the cherry on the talent sundae. Bravo!!!
He always has attention to detail
He’s one of my favorite entertainers. He’s a serious musician and a comedian.
Can someone please make this Broadway show for real? So 🔥🔥I’ll go see it! ❤🌟
Take THAT, Matthew Broderick!!! LOL!!! I'm serious, this song - and "Look for the Light" - better get nominated for Emmys! SO much fun to watch. (I gotta learn the words to this song!)
MAKE THIS A REAL MUSICAL 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
@@triceratops3 Everyone who watches this would.
Steve Martin should win an Emmy for this scene. And maybe a Tony.
This is my favourite scene of the season 👍
So catchy! 😂❤
So funny how during the whole season they all described this as a filler song and it turned out to be the best one ❤️
Patter song, not filler. It’s a rapid info drop akin to the a Modern Major General from Gilbert and Sullivans Pirates of Penzance.
@@dvh13 In the show, they describe a patter song as a filler song usually given to the cast member who can't sing very well. It's a dig at Steve Martin's character on the show.
Please, please we need a Broadway musical based on this scene
The more I hear it, the more I can see it as an animation. Can you imagine triplets waddling around all looking inocent and then plotting behind the adults backs?
Almost everyone in that room expected him to fail/wanted him to fail. Seeing them slowly go from skeptics to impressed, to giving him a genuine standing ovation was so satisfying! 😊
Agreed, even after what happened in episode four!
It so nice that Charles wanted so hard to find the killer and help Maybel and Oliver that despite his anxiety he just nailed the song!🎉
Also great so see the full version with the end here!
One of my favorite things about this is the people behind Steve Martin. Their faces and smiles makes it even better.
When you realize that Charles song was the showstopper that the producer was looking for
this was different from the one in the episode! I loved the sequence in the episode, it was amazing, the editing and the story telling, but this was amazing too! Thanks for sharing this version! Steve Martin is amazing! I loved it!!
I think they didn't want to put spoilers in it for people who just wanted to hear the song but haven't caught up to the episodes or watched the show. Like at the end too when they cut to the critic, they left out where they cut to the suspect originally in the episode. So my guess is that they cut that and the collage so they could release it for a wider audience. Like yeah probably people who don't watch the show wouldn't listen to this, but still 😂.
@@ollie2111It also just makes for a better video if you want to see the song
Oh wow! I love that this showed a lot that we didn’t see in the actual episode!!
I am now expecting this to be covered by high school choirs for Halloween.
I’ll never forget this ad long as I live😂😂😂😂😂. I still LOVE this. He needs an award just for this scene.❤❤❤
That one loud and high-pitched 'who' gets me every time. And the bigger frame takes it to the next level
1:01 when he nails the first verse and looks to Oliver in amazement! Haha. I think Jonathan's/Jason Veasey's reactions here are especially fun to watch!
An incredible performance! I watch sitting at home on the sofa, but at the end I want to jump up and applaud with all my might!
I want to yell “YES - that’s how you do it!” Every time.
I've watched this an unhealthy amount of times
Im addicted to this song oh lord
I would pay some serious money to see this done on Broadway with this cast!! Who's with me??
Steve Martin has always been utterly amazing but this performance had me grinning & singing for hours. Emmy for Mr Martin please & thank you! ❤
I don’t get the appeal of that Jeremy Allen White dude (who just won) at all. Meanwhile Steve easily wins us over with how fantastic he is. I think he’s far more deserving of the awards.
When I first watched this scene I had no idea how often I would come back to rewatch it. Steve's performance is genius.
I love that here you get to see his whole performance. I kind of wish that in the show they'd shown more of the performance, and only cut to the other characters for short moments, rather than having the split screen going the whole time.
I disagree! I love the shows more! The intensity, the parts that he emphasizes, the cop’s little movements as she’s singing along with it, all of it! I’ve gone back and rewatched that scene over and over! It’s the best! ❤️
@@janie3117 - I like those moments too. I guess what I was saying was I wish it were edited more conventionally. We could've still seen those moments with the other characters, but just cut between them and the performance. (And in this version, we'd still hear the performance on the soundtrack the entire time.) I guess I just found that the split-screen to be more distracting, rather than enhancing.
This show must be protected at all costs! ❤ May “Only Murders” continue for seasons and seasons to come! 🙏
Steve Martin earworm. I can't do his performance justice, but I'm singing this all the time!!! Please stage this hit!❤ Best song nomination for the win.
This performance smells like a Tony... I mean Emmy! 🙂
If they do it for real on the stage, it could be both! 😊❤
Nah, this is a full EGOT for sure.
This song keeps popping up in my head.
I’ve watched this way too many times 😂
I return to it every time I feel stressed which lately is daily. 😊
He's 78. And that happened.
Cant get of this song out of my head, this series has already become one of my favorites
This whole show needs to go to Broadway! Bravo!
Every theatre student/person is now going to learn this song for auditions/class
This was such a flawlessly fantastic performance! Put this straight onto the soundtrack album! It was perfect. Hurray for Steve Martin!!!
Is this the greatest song ever?
Yes. It is.
I unironically adore this song.
I can’t stop singing this song
I can’t either!! 😂😂
Steve Martin is a legend. Love from India
As a triplet and Steve Martin lover, I whole-heartedly am obsessed with this song.
I love when he looks at Oliver that he got through that much in the beginning!
This show is so good cuz they just let the talent cook. So many shows try to do too much, this show really puts it in the hands of the actors
This is actually so insanely good
Best season of Only Murders so far. Really stellar! 🎉😊❤
As a former thespian, this season has made me so happy. I love them playing with the camera angles and the multiple goings on, it helps to emphasize the sneaking around and trying to not get caught. Also, love that Charles killed his patter song! If they ever had the writers flush out a full album/soundtrack for this musical I'd buy it in a heartbeat if not just to support but I'd love this song and "look for the light"
Not to mention seeing everyone's awe as Martin keeps going, almost as if it really is the first time they've seen it but it's not too much (which is a fine line). LOVE THIS!
EDIT: I would've loved to seen Martin sing out the last note, but that's cuz we saw Broderick do it last ep
The soundtrack is usually released a few days after the last epoisode, and I hope all the songs from the musical will be on it.
@@Tinkerbe11 I’m hoping you’re right and they’ll do similar
@@Tinkerbe11It’s already out on iTunes
A patter song to end all patter songs. I've been so delighted by the musical numbers- made it easily my favorite season thus far.
“So quick as a whip gotta pick which Pickwick triplet did it”
0:58
What a tongue twister that I am proud to say I have mastered lol.
I practice that line and others in the car every day. It’s sooo addictive. I also like “Could Paco’s passion prove apocalyptic.”
May we all be so lucky to be as spry as Steve Martin is at nearly 80. Fkin legend
that last "who!?" though
Who else has this in their head all day, every day????
