Weird, I’m not able to release the clipping mask once it’s expanded to get the spherical pattern. It’s just showing as greyed out.

Same happened for me using Illustrator v27.8 - the 3D effects panel is totally different to what is shown here.
Instead try Effect>3D and Materials>3D (Classic)>Revolve (Classic) - that worked for me: )

hello! great tutorial except when i hit revolve it turned my shape into a cylinder not a circle, any reason for this?
