I love how Nick lowered his synths to compensate for the lack of bass due to technical faults. Brilliant, as always. John never stopped playing either, and this was so early on in their career. Handled it like pros.
I agree fast thinking and still pro...I also think Andy was also compensating a bit by sliding down on his guitar for a bit of bass drop during the break at 2:35 very pro..and never panicked at all
That low synth part is just there in the song at the end, Nick didn't change anything he was doing (unfortunately). He's the only one that could have added a low part to what he was doing.
You are incorrect. Nick flicked on the sub oscillator on the Jupiter 4 which introduced a square wave an octave down. Super cool heads on everyone’s part.
@@alistairsteadman3765 Yes, I agree, as I said, at the end of the song in the album version that part is there, just like he did here. I'm just saying he didn't do anything extra or save the day; he just played his part when it was time at the end of the song. he COULD have started playing something low earlier to compensate for John's bass going out, but he didn't.
Timeline of bass issues: 1:49 -- bass disappears; 1:56 Simon notices and looks towards John; 2:04 Roger is worried; 2:10 Andy is worried; 2:14 John steps on pedals; 2:28 Simon is worried; 2:30 Simon says something to Andy; Andy attepmts to imitate bass on his guitar; 2:48 a stage crew guy tries do something with knobs onstage 2:52 John shakes his head in despair; 3:11 Nick has set his synth to bass tones; 3:22 Nick plays bass parts; 3:40 dome feedback screech, Simon is annoyed and shakes his head; 3:49 songs finished, Simon stays with back towards audience, ashamed.
the 3:11 and 3:22 are just part of the song, Nick didn't change anything to try and compensate, that part is on the album at the end just like here. And Simon didn't look annoyed, he laughed and looked more like he was thinking, "oh well, what're you gonna do, it's live music".
I’ve recently have become a huge fan of this song, and I wanted to hear it live from the 80s and I come across this video. And seeing how they handle all the tech issues like pros and reading all the comments and stuff is so fucking cool. I like this song even more now and it just blows my mind how talented they were so young
I would've had a coronary. Remember how pissed off James Hetfield was when his mic was out during the Grammys with Lady Gaga? That would've been minor with me. Nice going, John, with keeping your cool like that.
Simon was going to go to John and realized there was no sound on John's side so he looks to Andy instead. This just proves how much John bass is needed by DD.
Simon Le Bon is wearing an Anthony Price suit. First made for Bryan Ferry in his G.I. style period but later also worn by David Sylvian of Japan ( blue colour) in about 1981 when appearing live in concert; and a shirtless David Bowie (blue colour) on the front cover of an Arena (?) magazine.
Saw duran in 81 at Manchester apollo never heard noise like it.looking back i guess i was lucky but at the time there was loads of good bands around remember seeing depeche mode in may 82 and dave gahan singing with braces on lol. Them were the days
Entertainers know that despite technical difficulties the show must go on ( check out Motown 25 when Jermaine's microphone went off and MJ shared his with him)!
Dear Andy, if you ever saw my words here(very lucky me), please PLEASE kindly enlighten how you got that killer guitar tone thru' your Yamaha SG.......
I don't think that crowd could ever know just how lucky they were.
Lovely
exactly!
I would of gotten up from my seat and start dancing
My words exactly. Love them to this day.

@@galtem Yeah any live version of this that I've heard has those low synths at the end

Just shows how empty the music is without the bass. A VERY prominent instrument in Duran Duran, which is why I love them. Bass adds soul to the music.
The bass is the pillar of the arrangement in most of their songs
Yah like there’s no such thing as Duran Duran without their bass
EXACTLY
Love the technical difficulties and John never stopped dancing; A pro at 20 years old.
Ah...John es un genio!!!
He's a great professional put together musician on stage.

I appreciate the rundown. I don't think he's ashamed at all. Good job guys!

don't think Simon was ashamed but your rundown was interesting, I read it with pleasure pushing all timestamps )
Thank you for this. I totally couldn't tell without your breakdown.
Completely live! No tape background. Sounds so much more fresh. How to write a great simple killer pop song.
Wow!!! They sound so good for being live. Simon definitely has an amazing voice.
Nick like the true professional added the bass at the end.
Nick Rhodes the true Synthisist!!
John always save the day when something goes wrong he's very professional. Salute to Mr. John taylor 👍
Here he is in a little panic tho,
DD sounds great when andy harmonises
I love Simon's dancing ... only he can dance like that and still look super cool!
and Simon's big eyes were so very charming back then.......
@@mattma96 Yeah, big blue eyes!
wow! andy and nick stepping up! great to see them concerned for one another, let's do that again please? Andy, come back!
The show must go on! Great professionalism bassist John Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes for helping
1:56 Rogers face looked so worried. Reminded me of a sad puppy. So cute!
Simon at his best; he doesn't miss a note. Overall, a group of well talented kids.
They kept on even though there were problems, they truly are a professional band.
Technical things happen and those guys show have corrected it immediately. Remember, the show must go on great professionalism

Raw and uncut the band rising up into a major act ! Love early stuff the best
Duran Duran still in tune 2020♥

A big technical problems with John´s bass, but he just go through :-)
And the music continues to this day.....!!!
For those who ask if Nick plays❤️...Go Andy 🎸
1:56 Simon: is there anyone out there on bass? )

This a gem!
It really is!
This is just so very very special...early DD and one of theor best songs. Thank you!!
Not sure about his dancing but Simon looks and sounds amazing!! Well done for carrying on too.
I would've had a coronary. Remember how pissed off James Hetfield was when his mic was out during the Grammys with Lady Gaga? That would've been minor with me. Nice going, John, with keeping your cool like that.
They are so beautiful!
mind-blowing
Very cool under pressure especially so young!
ROGER!! ROGER!! ROGER""
Simon was going to go to John and realized there was no sound on John's side so he looks to Andy instead. This just proves how much John bass is needed by DD.
True Duran Duran sound🎹🎹⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🐈⬛🐾
This is so beautiful it's painful
ITS MARVELOUS, i was 6yo,
Great song! The DD beginnings. June 8, 2017
These Guys were determined to make it big and they did.

Thanks for posting these. I've never seen this before. Roger is sooo classically handsome, love his style😍. Best band ever😘
John thought they were on "MTV Unplugged".
formazione originale perfetta
This is a sign of great band as soon as John's bass rig dropped out nick and Andy jumped in to cover and fill in true pros ...
You are spoiling us :-) Thankyou!
The BEST. Thanks!
Increíble!Les amo❤️
Yo también 😍
My favorite DD song !!!!!!!!!
I think this is the most earliest time DD's performance on here CZcams...
One of the best channels here!!!!
Sin duda alguna... John es el corazón de esta banda!!!😍
SI. Sin Duda!
I love this song.
Despite any technicalities the show must go on!
Would have been amazing to have seen them at that time!
Simon has a beautíful voice sings very well👏👏👏

3:07 John's Slapbass missing
❤ ❤❤❤❤
I saw Duran Duran play this song in June 2022 at Castle Howard.
I'm impressed, all of them are wearing new clean clothes
I love you^^Simon
How proffessional to keep calm and carry on, when this was at the beginning of their career, they played on :D
I was waiting for the amazing bassline at 2:54 aaaahh how frustrating :(
I love you .....🌹😘 December 28, 2017. DDW
Dear Andy, if you ever saw my words here(very lucky me), please PLEASE kindly enlighten how you got that killer guitar tone thru' your Yamaha SG.......
The Sound of Thunder has any early live versions?
John looks badass
WOW! Never saw this one before!
Too bad the bass was cutting out.
Is there a.ny xplanation 4 such identity, lov DD
BRASIL
I love this version without the bass with the synths
Something happened to the bass since the middle of the song...even Andy looked at John))
Is there anyone out there these boys are performing for?
i was 6yo,
The sound engineer forgot the bass and the guitar, he has removed them from the final result!!! 😆
Andy was the secret sauce
Hey! What the hell! Why didn't Nick do the cool little descending/ascending scale after the first "Anyone else outside" of each chorus?!!!
1:51 is JT slapping his jack plug to work or did he select no pickups by mistake?
