- Many of you followed along with the Channel's facebook album where I shared with you step by step, the amazing toy dump truck build designed by S.G. DeVries and showcased in his book The Great Big Truck. As promised, on this week's show, I take a little time to show off this toy and demonstrate it's many features and it's incredible design.

What a great show! Thanks so much for building one of my designs! And I must say, even though I designed the truck and wrote the book, your level of craftsmanship exceeds mine by quite a ways and you have really done justice to the model. I like that you pointed out where you did things differently from the original design - this highlights that as long as functionality isn’t compromised, you can always alter details to suit your own preferences. Ironically, when I designed model and wrote the book, I didn’t own a scroll saw so needed to use a bandsaw, then sand to shape. Now that I do own a scroll saw, I would also choose to use it over the bandsaw for many of the parts. This video really makes me want to build this truck again.
As a side note, it took about 18 months to design, build, and write the book. Probably about 1500-2000 hours. Lots of trial and error, mistakes, redesigns, and a whole graveyard of rejected or replaced parts. But the end product was worth it. Take care, Kenny!
I’m more and more thinking to buy your book. I just have no time for it lately. And few other projects started and not finished since December last year. You did excellent job on it. I’m subscribed to your channel too.

Don't just think about it Marcelo, do it!!! I bought the book with the intention of making the model "down the road" and each night I would pick up the book and browse through the pages to see what I was getting myself into. The more I browsed, the more I got excited about making the truck and it wasn't long before I was putting the filming portion of the show on hold to make my own Great Big Truck. You won't regret it. Don't sell yourself short on this one Randy. While I will agree that this is an advanced project, it is nothing that can't be done with a little patience and extra thought. Heck, even if you make a piece of the truck each day, you would still be honing the skill you seek as you go. Honestly, give it a try. I think you will surprise yourself. Thanks for tuning in.

What a great project, the designer did a wonderful job detailing the book from what I can see, I agree with Ken about gears, you have to spend time sanding and shaping, I should know I made a Grandfather clock back in 1983 and the clock mechanism are all cut from black cherry (I mean every gear) it took me 1 year from start to finish for this Eli Terry clock, Ken you did a wonderful job on this Big Truck let's all face it We are all kids at heart and I wouldn't give it up LOL great show and tell Ken👍👌

It sometimes boggles my mind Richard, the amount of time and effort it took me to make it. I can't even begin to fathom how much time and effort it must have taken for Steven DeVries to design and make the first prototype of this model. It truly is a piece of art. No question this model is in your wheelhouse! Extraordinarily design and your talent in execution. Also a feather in your cap of Mr. DeVries comments to your build. Definitely see this as an "inside" play truck. Sand and this truck would not play well together. And to be honest, I would have been frozen to the screen each week if you did a video series of this.
I would agree with you that this toy is an inside toy. I thought it was pretty nice of Steve DeVries to drop in to the show and leave his comment. It really says something about his character. He's just an everyday guy like you and me. The difference is....HE DESIGNS WICKED WOODEN MODELS!!!!!! LOL. Thanks for tuning in to the show Dwight and for taking the time to leave the kind words. Hi Kenny, what an amazing model, when you said about the headlights I was half expecting them to light up. The detail on this goes far beyond a toy, it is more like an incredible working model, and I am not even half way through your description so I can hardly wait to see what other tip bits you have here. I don't know if I will be able to join you next week or for several weeks as I will be up to my elbows in this book, i can hardly wait to receive it.
I would of added some fairy lights or LEDS for the head lamps and maybe as running lights

As for the headlights.......I really wanted to put something like that in and every model I make, I want to motorize but I get so far into the model that by the time I start considering the motors or lights, there's just nowhere to put them or their power source. I'm halfway through my build Kenny, just made all the gears and sprockets. Think I may have bitten off more than I can chew though, but I will persevere having come this far.
You've got this Dennis. You're already half way so you have already overcome so many obstacles. Just take your time when it comes to the gears. I found out (almost a little too late) that is was worth the extra effort to make fake mountings and a fake differential to get the fitting of the gears to work correctly and then once you were happy with them, you could mount them in the truck and just fine tune. Either way, I've got faith in you Dennis. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished model. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

WOW! What a model and a great show! You are the KING of model building, your changes made a nice touch. I'm glad I got a chance to tune in. I've been building Alice (my side X side Ranger) a new home. I'm a one-man crew lol. I needed a break to see what you were making and I wasn't disappointed. I just bought some 1x12's today to build a bookcase for our grand-daughter. The price almost made me cry lol. But I'm still trying to tune in. Can't wait to see what is next on your list. Take care!

As for the bookcase for your granddaughter, you might have gotten off a little cheaper if you made it from rough cut diamonds. It might be cheaper than lumber at this stage of the game. LOL. I dont know how you find the time or patience. This would take me a year or more to build, even with the plans.
Those toys take really long to make them. I know something about it from my own experience. I also wish to know how to find more time for my hobby shop. I guess when I retire, but that’s still like 15 years to go. Lol
I've always had a theory on time and patience Dave. You will always find the time to do the things you truly love doing and no amount of patience is required when you truly love doing something that you made time for. It's a win/win situation. Marcelo, as I said to David, we can always find time to do the things we want to do. I work a full time, 40+ hour a week job that has nothing to do with the show or with woodworking. I still find the time to produce two shows a week, work on my hobbies as much as I like, do all the yard work AND see my granddaughter two nights a week. There's always time. Sometimes, we just can't see it. I hope you don't have to wait until retirement to get the extra time to work on your hobby. Remember, even if you put aside one hour a night to work on your hobby, it is still extra time that you weren't working on it before.
Kenny, you have outdone yourself with this build. Amazing model and your workmanship does it justice. I followed your Facebook posts and I am really glad you made this video. I noticed on Amazon that he has two other project books available. Are those builds in your future? I hope so. Great build doesn’t do this one credit. WOW!!
I am hoping to make more of Steve's models Paul. It's just a matter of getting the time to do it and purchasing the books. I will most likely ask for the books for my birthday or for Christmas and then go from there. I'd like to do a build video of one of these but I really don't want to cross any lines by giving away too much from the designer's book. I may have to think about it. Also time wise for a hobby, it is little harder for me, as I am a cabinet maker by trade. After work I just dont feel like doing more cutting anymore. LOL Thanks again for this video

Question: I have all the time in the world, for I'm retired. Is this a build that a beginner could accomplish? Never did anything close to this. I have all the tools that are necessary to make it, but no knowledge how to build models. I like to build furniture and that is a far cry from this build. You did an absolute beautiful job.
It would be hard for you to start on this model. I would suggest purchasing few plans from Toys and Joys at first to practice. T&J also are very nice plans. Check some of Kenny’s videos he uploaded in past. Good luck!!!🤞🤞🤞
Unlike Marcelo (who answered your question already) I don't think this project is out of reach for a beginner woodworker. It's all a matter of having patience and taking the time to work through each process in your head before you make it. You have to remember that this book is more of a set of plans than it is a tutorial and you would have to come up with your own methods to cut each piece. That being said, it isn't much different than furniture making. It's just a smaller scale. The skills and safety measures that you would use in furniture making would still apply. I'm not one to tell a beginner that they can't do something. I'm more of an instructor who says, "if you want to do it, you can". Give it a try Jay. I think you'll enjoy it.
While this model has some more advanced features Marcelo, I don't see it being any more difficult than a Toys and Joys pattern. In fact, a lot of the pieces of this model are much more simple to make than a T&J pattern. Where the difference come in, is in things like the gears and the racks and that is all a matter of patience and taking your time to make sure that everything fits correctly and if it doesn't, remake it!!! Other than a possible frustrating time meshing the gears, this is a very doable project for many different skill levels.
@@acutabove_woodworkings Ken I think I will try it this winter when I have nothing to do because it's cold outside. It will be a challenge, but I think I will try it anyway. The worse that can happen is I modify it and don't make all the gears, which is probably the biggest stumbling blocks in this build. Thank you for making these videos. They are very informative and I'm learning from them. I'm 74 years old and I still love to learn.

I betcha that truck would burn a hell of a lot easier than my Tonka when I was a kid!! How many hours did that build take?

Have you seen his tire tread cutting apparatus. I wonder if it works. He uses it on a small modelers table saw. I have one but not the same brand. Mine is a proxxon. I sent him a message to ask if his jig would work with my saw but never got a response. Anyway for anyone who doesn’t know about him he’s very knowledgeable especially for his age.
I have contacted him several times and always gotten a response. In fact, he even sent me some patterns before I ever started this model. If you go through the comments section of this video, I believe he even commented on it. I have seen the jig but never used or built it. Thanks for tuning in Danny.
Wait, how does the dowel drill centering thing work? Just draw a line through the top guide?
I love the look of the wood between what you chose of the stock. The tires for example look amazing like they are end grain and wavier grain and darker then the rest. Looks very clean too. The bucket especially with the light and dark looks super clean.
Glad that you liked the build. I'm a huge fan of contrasting woods and I love the way that walnut and maple look together. As for the dowel centre "thing".....I'm not sure which one you are talking about here. Can you clarify your question? Thanks for tuning in to the show.
@@acutabove_woodworkings The jig for drilling center of dowels. Video opens with you talking about it. Maybe you made a video of it and I didn’t realize yet?
@@FearsomeWarrior The jig does not automatically drill out the centre of the dowel. It is a jig for holding smaller pieces of dowels so that you can mark the centre and drill them out without having to hold them with your hands. You can find the build here...czcams.com/video/dhh0mi6EfjU/video.html

Hi, Kenny, did you have to make longer extensions to go on the rack gears? Or, make longer rack gears?
Neither. The gears were all just fine as they were. I am assuming that you are referring to the steering mechanisms and all of them were just fine using the patterns in the book. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

@@drail80s I originally made them too short. Not because the plans were wrong, but because I questioned their length and cut them off. I ended up remaking them to the sizes in the book and they were fine after that. I hope this helps.

Hi, kenny, if you could need some advice. On page 173 of SG DeVries book, the big truck build, starting to insert the D12 axle. Problem is it hits the A7 axle part witch is between the F38 pieces. Did you cut out that section of axle to let the D12 axle through> I am on page 173, but trying to figure out how to get the D12 axle through the F38 pieces. It hits the A7 axle. Did you experience that conflict at all? Thoughts?

While I can't tell you what to purchase here Bobby, I have looked at both of these saws and if I had a choice, I would purchase the Pegas model over the Hegner. That's just my personal preference though. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.
Can this be built without a lathe?
Dave, yes it can. I built the original without a lathe, just using standard off the shelf dowels. In fact, I didn’t even own a lathe when I designed this and intentionally detail out ways of construction that don’t need one. Thanks.

Dave, as Steve has pointed out, you don't need a lathe to work on this project. One of the great things about this wonderful hobby of our is that for every process that we need to perform, there are about 10 different methods we can choose to accomplish that process. I like to use the lathe and a pen mandril when working on my wheels because it gives me the opportunity to make sure that they are all completely uniform in size. That being said, the wheels of this model are cut with a hole saw and therefore, they are already all the same size. There are always alternative methods to working on these projects and a lathe is definitely not needed to build this model. I hope you are going to consider giving this one a try Dave. Kenny looking at your video at 19. 30 s the model looks some wot Luna can you adaped the plans and with your skill create a Moon car or some think out of mad max
Any plan is able to be modified to look and function exactly as you wish. The most important thing in modifying a plan is that you have to completely understand how the plan work and how each section relates to the other sections so that you don't change something that will be critical later on in the build. Once the initial carcass of this vehicle is made and the gears and assemblies are in place, the body shape at that point could be modified to be anything you like. I hope that you will try this build and that you will attempt the modification of it. If you ever do, please send photos so I can see what you've done. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
I would be scared to know how much you'd have to sell that for to be profitable. This would be something I made once for my kid and never again
Unfortunately Charles, most models are like that. They are made once and then displayed as proof of your accomplishment. Being able to sell one of these to be profitable would not be possible in my opinion. At 200 hours of work, even at $15/hour, the buyer would still have to pay $3000 for this piece and I honestly can't see anyone paying that kind of money for a wooden toy truck. Even at $15 an hour, there isn't much of a profit there as your time is worth something and personally, I think my time is more valuable than $15 per hour. The bottom line here is that these project are made for fun and for the self satisfaction of being able to do it. The sense of pride that it brings when people see what you've made and how incredible it really is, is worth. more than the money you'd get from selling the model. Knowing my luck, people would see I've made this then hound me to have one too then balk at the price I'd give them lol. Might try a "dumbed down" version at some point, the design over all is really cool.
