Why start at the top? Because the ball is heavy/light? Newtonian physics state gravitational acceleration is constant... Mass doesn't matter. I think the big brain move is starting from the bottom. That way the ball can fall freely when you release the top support, and it can accelerate all the way to the floor. Otherwise, it will be continually slowed down by hitting and bouncing off the supports below as you're struggling to pull them out. But again, we're talking about optimizing like 0.2 seconds tops.

      No, that's just wrong.
Sure the ball would fall and accelerate to the bottom, but that doesn't mean anything. Think about it like this. Assume it takes the same amount of time to take out all the supports, regardless of whether you start at the bottom or top. If you start at the bottom, it still has to travel further. If you start from the top, it takes the same time for you to remove all the panels and the balls already at the bottom.
The ball's acceleration does not matter if the ball is essentially at the bottom (given it takes you the same time to remove the panels starting from the top and bottom), because they're dropped at the same time.
I see what you're saying tho. For instance, if a ball is dropped off a 600-meter tall building, and I drop a ball from 2 meters off the ground when the ball dropped from the 600-meter tall building has 10 meters before it hits the ground, the ball dropped off the building due to its high velocity will hit obviously hit the ground first.
But in this scenario, the ball has ALREADY accelerated to a high velocity. If you wanted to make this analogy analogous to this cube game, then you'd drop the balls at the same time (from 2-meters and 600-meters)

But yes, it doesn't matter if the ball is heavy or not.

What you CAN do to increase time is to start from neither the bottom nor the top. You start from the second to the top.
When you get close to the bottom (let's say the second last panel), you pull the top panel. This way the ball accerlerates and (given that the ball doesn't hit the last panel) you pull the last panel out and then you actually benefit from the acceleration. But this would involve perfect timing and would probably just make things confusing to actually pull off.
