  • What is spiritual bypassing, and how can we know when we're engaged in it?
Spiritual Bypassing is "tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks."
    - John Welwood
"Awareness or presence is never avoidance. In awareness, you allow yourself to feel whatever it is that you feel; you do not repress it in any way."
    - Eckhart Tolle
"What you resist persists." - Carl Jung
"Repressed emotions are unactualized spiritual lessons." - Jeff Brown

I've been slowly making sense of things and I'm getting somewhere.
    I have a theory/hypothesis/idea.
There is a hierarchy to your being/existence/self.
For now it's as such (in order of depth):
    1. world & body
    2. nervous system & feeling
    3. psyche & knowledge
    4. consciousness & perceiver
    5. awareness & self
When we say ailment we mean level 1.
When we say blockage and tension we mean level 2.
When we say shadow work or spiritual bypassing, we mean level 3.
When we say awakening, we're talking about any one of many processes/insights/transformations which may involve any or all of the previous three levels that significantly affect the experience of level 4, the perceiver.
When we say enlightenment, we're talking about self-realization of the self as awareness.
If this is accurate, then spiritual bypassing may be very relevant to the psyche, overcoming blockages, and reaching higher states of consciousness, which in turn may be relevant to the goal of self-realization. But according to this perspective (which isn't yet in my experience) spiritual bypassing is just another description/concept and itself a misdirection from the ultimate truth that none of this is real and nothing is actually required for self-realization other than awareness.
I've seen gurus with enormous power in their ability to transform lives with nothing other than their words. They can be quite broken people. They have essentially bypassed allot of things that would have made the journey much longer. This is sometimes talked about, but only when someone liberated is talking of the ultimate. I'm merely repeating and peculating.
As for me personally, I have had changes occur in me and allot of the concealed parts of my psyche revealed to me. This changes the quality of my life somewhat and empowers me. I even experience some things that could be described in whimsical ways or even miraculous ways, but it doesn't actually get me closer to liberation as much as it seems. Because to do that I need to turn away from everything and focus on only awareness until the sort of cataclysm that is enlightenment occurs.
Instead I've become even more interested in spirituality and even thinking about this that I'm talking about.
I've never used the word bypassing. I've seen others use it, and I've even seen a highly trusted and powerful guru use the word in the opposite way most do. He used it to mean, bypassing spirituality, because that can be a distraction in itself. When I learned what the word means I realized why he used it, and so carefully and thoughtfully too.
I came up with my own word and description for the trap that is most relevant in my experience which I actually haven't heard others use or describe. Externalization.
Externalization is the primary underlying universal distracting force in all of life. On any level, there is this force that turns the attention outwards and away from looking at the self. This can be seen easily in the psyche in the form of repression, projection, transference and spiritual bypassing.
But to me it is more fundamental than the psychological. I suspect it manifests even in the body and in all of life. And the self referred to is not just the person/psyche but the self as in pure awareness. I suspect it is that fundamental. And from this perspective, the very concept/mechanism/manifestation of spiritual bypassing and it's solutions are themselves another form of externalization.
Seeing this I see life as a kind of perpetual compromise by the self in the form of externalization. I suspect that the very mechanism of manifestation incorporates externalization on some fundamental or metaphysical level.
Therefore life on the path to enlightenment is literally just a game and delay that the self plays via this fundamental principle of externalization.
As gurus who have been liberated age, they tend to get less and less concerned with life and all the different aspects of it. They seem to be constantly changing towards seeing everything as an "externalization" or distraction to the ultimate which they wish to share with their students. When they interact with people not on the path they entertain the drama (externalization of the self present in the individual). I suspect because they see clearly that not many will come to know the ultimate before death. For those of us who aspire to, even spirituality itself must be seen as a distraction.

There is a HUGE difference between repression and non-judgemental acceptance.
The problem is not a problem, your judgement and attitude towards the situation is the problem.
By simply accepting what is without judgement by the ego, one can let it go without repressing or bypassing...

  • @MysticCaravan
    @MysticCaravan Před 12 dny

Yes, I agree. And would add, that in the Mahayana, we have the resources and practices to help us see what needs to be healed. One should not think that everyone who is making progress on the path is faking it. There is this danger where if someone says something like 'there is no good reason to start a war', which is in line with the Dalai Lama's quotes around 'war is monstrous' and 'we are brainwashed to think war is acceptable', then the person who says 'there is no good reason to start a war' may be accused of 'spiritual bypassing'. It's the classic case of labeling someone who's views we don't agree with. We should never label someone in this way. It is short-circuiting our own development and cognitive function. In sum, being on the path of the mahayana does not mean you are spiritual bypassing. Don't give up on paths that are proven and think you are just going to find yourself without any help, sangha, teachers, etc.

From what I've learned, ALL emotions are seemingly energies in motion, both good and bad. Good emotions encourage attachment while bad emotions encourage repression and the right path can help free you from both. However, from what I've explored, BOTH of these types of energies in motion have an absolute need to be expressed and released, possibly more than once, in order for these overwhelming emotions to pass and liberate yourself of them. Otherwise, your path will likely lead to suffering or more suffering. And unfortunately, sometimes this suffering can last a lifetime and possible beyond. Great discussion & love your channel!!

I believe this is what’s called in common parlance as, “Fake Virtue.” It happens especially in the religious communities, I have seen it. Truthfully, there are many reasons for someone, well anyone of us to act in this way. Fake virtue is not always due to nefarious desires or intentions, although that can be true in certain circumstances. However, it is egoic and needs to be checked.

For most people the spiritual path is simply an attempt to write an autobiography which is more pleasing than the one they had before, with enlightenment the glorious final chapter in their life story. But some don't feel the need to write any autobiography, good or bad. They can laugh at their anger and folly just the same as they laugh at their jokes. No need to bypass or address. Just keep an eye on things so they cause no harm, and let them be.

  • @IExpectedBSJustNotThisMuchBS

Thank you. Had not heard of the phrase spiritual bypassing and so I learned a new phrase. Spiritual bypassing is what I’ve called the magic bullet or magic escape route. Something so many of us yearn for. Years ago I dreamed of getting stuck in an underground tunnel/thoroughfare on a chariot with an imminent threat posed by my having to pass through the tunnel. So I sought escape to the surface. But at every exit I might use to bypass having to go through the whole tunnel, I was faced with stairs, something the horses couldn’t manage. I reached the frightening conclusion that I had to go through the tunnel. (So much symbolism in that dream that I will not go into.)
The tunnel represented a health issue I’d lived with my whole life. I used to think “If not for this ailment, I could do thus and so.” As if there was a me without that ailment. When I awoke I realised there never was a Madison who could do thus and so. Prior to that I kept living in an alternate world so as to put off processing and feeling the ongoing grief of the never ending losses I experience as a result of living with so many restrictions.
I came to realise the whole dream was telling me there are no magic bullets in life; you can’t go around, over or under, you must go through. (I’ve had spiritually abusive people tell me that “as soon as you understand why you have this illness, the illness will disappear because it no longer serves a purpose.” Part of the toxic positivity you spoke of.) Oh yeah, you can go around, over, and under with your feelings, but as you pointed at, at some point it comes out in one way or another. The part of us that seeks understanding eventually throws water at us, and we either see the wake up call for what it is and acknowledge we need to go through or we adopt other strategies of repression.

To me, its like the difference between taking the beginners course vs the advanced one. Oh yeah, you thing you've got this positivity thing nailed down? Here, try keeping that act going while carrying a thousand pound rock! I believe that in going through the tunnel we are learning and growing in strength and wisdom, and we are to accept and embrace the journey fully, and move through it in full faith that the God of all has a perfect plan that we just cannot yet fully comprehend.

Spirituality is 99% bullshit. I experienced my initial awakening 23 years ago. This included a direct ecstatic encounter with Source Light. The process of facing, purging, and integrating the shadow, repressed instincts, emotions, feelings, complexes, wounds, etc takes decades of agonizing inner work. Everyone wants the Light and the Bliss and although one can taste it momentarily, to realize and actualize it so that one is always abiding as that takes a lifetime or even more. The religions sell their religion with promises of salvation, angels, light, bliss, ecstacy, etc but they fail to inform people what is truly involved. In our times, narcissism is epidemic and everyone is badly wounded. Great to see you shining light on the subject of spiritual bypassing, which is all too common in our time. The Soul must be purged and healed before authentic realization happens. Peace.

Timestamp 11:01. Your words speak to what I've been going through for the last week. There have been 4 unusual situations that have surfaced in relation to 4 different people in my environment that have set me off. I don't think how is all that important. It's almost like the anger that stirred in me in the first instance funded the other 3 situations. I began TM back in the seventies, so it's trained me to observe myself, my emotions, feelings and reaction conjunct with situations. What I've observed in my experience, if I allow the emotions to be there they usually pass. In TM they teach that in the process of meditation, thoughts will arise, that thought represents stress release. Rather than pushing it away, it's a matter of observing the thought and gently bringing back the mantra. In some respects I think I do it in what I've been going through this past week. There has been a lot of sadness. I have not really been fighting it, it's beginning to lift at this point. What I think I've come to realize, just like with meditation when a thought occurs which pulls us from our objective of meditation in order to transcend or move into bliss consciousness momentarily, the same thing seems to happen with us internally if we have unresolved emotions. The situations that occurred to allow me to view and experience my internal disruption were opportunities that others unconsciously provided for my benefit. It's been a tough week but the emotions seem to be dissolving. Whether any of that is actually true in absolute terms, I would not try to see the idea to anyone else; but it is my current conclusion. Thank you for providing the podcast, it definitely spoke o what I've been going through.

Leonardo da Vinci said "The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions " Plato shared with us wisdom he learnt from Egypt, wisdom that was a death sentence in Greece, Rome (Christianity) ..Pythagoras, Socrates and later Hypatia of Alexandria. Plato in his dialogue "The Republic " tells the parable of " The Cave " Plato starts by telling us of prisoners being held in a underground den, let us examine this den via the geometry of Bernhard Riemann and Felix Klein..Klein bottle..3rd and 4th dimensions. Plato tells us that the prisoners are bound up unable to move their heads, let us examine this bondage via the psychology of Erich Fromm..socialisation of consciousness.. aware-unaware. Plato tells us that the prisoners mistake shadows for substance, let us examine this mistake via the philosophy of Thales, Hume and Kant..synthetic a priori judgement..not thing in itself. Plato tells us that one of the prisoners is released, let us examine this release via the wisdom of T Lobsang Rampa..stilling the mind and conscious astral travel..leaving the cave/body. Plato tells us that the prisoners will reject this release, let us examine this rejection via the psychology of Stockholm Syndrome..Plato quotes Homer..forgive them for they know not what they say. It is not the hole picture for me. I had narcissistic parents, the mother wanted a sunny sunshine boy, who no longer rebells and be angry, for each vulcanic bliss of anger that was justified, you get some distractions or ignorance and other strategy to get the child to be happy or peaceful. In order to create your own idealistic personal child, that hear to your commands like a roboter.
So that’s the stone which unleashed to roll with these kind of programs. In fact now I know the programs with my mind and understand who the works, but the programs are on a different board branded, which react faster then the mind, some call it instinct.
And to be on that mood with the insecurities and anger feels not good. You can face the parents or you go new paths in life.
To feel (be aware) and release the anger and other negative/unpleasant emotions can be a way to deal with it in a peaceful way, and may you find huge amounts of different techniques and philosophical ideas to do this.
I think is not the point of all, in my way it is/was important to find out, what is life all about, going forward with the hole bag of the past with huge expirence it‘s not easy.
Enlightenment is a trap or illusion that gives a lot of people in this world a good economic business opportunity.
U.G. Krishnamurti is maybe a different guru at all.

As always you arrive to share your insight that resonates with me. I would love to have your guidance with regard to dealing with a teenager (female). Maybe you could do a video covering this. Im only recently awakening (1-2 yrs) and she is 13 so she was living with unawakened parents. We, now I, am responsible. She is fully aware of my awakening and I am aware of my control tendencies. The triggers have spiked and so this tells me I am denying something in me but how do I guide a teenager without some aspect of rules that need to be adhered to without control? And here is my confusion, frustration, and sometimes anger. Please, i hope you can consider to create a video on this topic.
Meanwhile i think its time for me to relisten to your videos. Thankyou as always 🌸

I think the term “spiritual bypassing” gets thrown around a lot. I don’t use it in the way you mention here. There def is a way to spiritually bypass accountability for your actions by using spiritual concepts as a means to manipulate people and situations. When the Sakyong of Shambhala demanded BJs from attendants, telling them that in the Ultimate Reality they didn’t feel comfortable with it-that was spiritually bypassing their actual feelings and desires. He wasn’t wrong-Ultimately we don’t have selves with preferences, but in that case why was he demanding it in the first place.

If you have the peace of Jesus in you you have it because you gave all your burdens to him. When you know you are forgiven for your sins you don’t carry the world on your shoulders anymore. Now if you think you are a celestial being or a Demi God or Some sort of enlightened special Human and you cant shake the guilt or your past miss deeds are haunting you. Than that is when you realize you are nothing special you are only human but a prize in the eyes of Jesus. So give your life to Jesus and be humble or be humbled by life!

It’s difficult to be on the receiving end of these judgements… my sister has a habit of dismissing my concerns about being safe from coronavirus by saying “I already know where I’m going when I die” . This is condescending and insulting on many levels, but I don’t have a way to puncture these pretensions without making more karma for myself... Instead it’s the challenge of Jesus words that state “forgive us as we forgive others” . In a human life one of the most difficult things is to leave yourself undefended from attacks of this kind and have sufficient faith to not retaliate.

Yes but after having tried to go through with it with other people in conflicts and they ALWAYS turn 100% responsibility back to yourself and NEVER acknowledge your perspective or consolidate with maturity. At some point you need to get the fuck away from that situation and not have them trigger you constantly.
Forget about enlightenment? What if you're tormented by negative entity attachments and shit life - what then? Just sit with it? Or go within and try and look for answers that you just CAN NOT find answers to in the mundane life? There is more to this than you make it seem. How to deal with spiritual torment if not with deep spiritual practice??

I'm in the same boat, dealing with a narcissist family member. Having boundaries and going no contact helps but it angers them and they put out rumors and gossip in order to control what others think about me. Now other family members are avoiding me. It hurts of course and I wait for the day I can be validated, that they expose themselves as not being the saint/ golden child. I would love to have opportunity to see the bigger picture, take mushrooms, dmt or auaska but like the trix bunny it never happens as close as I almost get. I'm stuck trying to figure out why this situation exists without the ability to understand perspective.

Ever notice that how we see 'Enlightenment' needs to come with some sort of supernatural validation? That person is a saint because he/she performed miracles. That monk has it going on with all that cool superhuman Kung Fu stuff. They know some cosmic secrets you don't....secret things...mystical things.
True enlightenment is a real downer. You're enlightened to the fact that it's all humbug. -What a buzzkill! Enlightenment is realizing all the cool stuff is all horseshit.
So who needs it? Rock that delusion, man! Believe in it even if it isn't true! You'll live a happier life and have a lot more fun! Sure, ya need to keep some enlightenment stewing in the back of your brain so you don't go off and do something stupid. (Lookin' at you, snake handlers) But life is just a ride and a sucky one at that without a little magic.
