- Today we get our 1971 Chevy Nova into the shop. This car was originally a 350 4 speed 12 bolt SS car. It has had a few different drive lines during my owner ship. Today we start the process and putting it back to factory with a fire breathing small block and a rebuilt muncie 4 speed transmission.

Dani, you need to buy Dan a set of fender covers for Fathers Day❤️
I can't believe how much this bloke gets done. He has a real job too. I also can't understand why he doesn't have more subs. This is one of my favourite car channels.
Nice to see my favourite DD car getting some love!!
Yes sir me too
She's coming around
Same
WOW finding a car you already own is mint!!
I'm glad your keeping the nova. Beautiful car Dan
I'm thoroughly confused he kept making references he was selling it?
The more I see, the more I like this Nova SS. The badge, alone, is worth keeping, but add to that the overall condition of it and this is one helluva keeper ❣️
Yeah it's a nice unit.
Glad you're keeping the Nova around unless you want to sell it to me, also glad you're ditching the big block. Don't get me wrong, I love them too, legendary engines like the small blocks. I had one I planted in a '76 SS/RS Camaro and another in a '70 Nova back in the day but that was 30 years ago and time and technology marches on. I saw the video on your small block and I'll bet it will be a ripper but dollars to doughnuts after all these years I'm a LS believer. Lighter , more efficient and with comparable power output with just a cam change i'm sold. I just stuck a stock 2009 4.8 into a '86 S10 running a Q Jet with a T5 behind it and I can't believe how it scoots. The small block you're using is very cool and I can't wait to see how strong it runs, getting that weight off the front end should get it carving the corners with ease.
I'll take a small block over a big block any day... So happy to see this happening!!
Love the car. I had a 74 ss nova 350 (replaced with 350 4 bolt from a truck) 4 sp Brown with tan stripes center console gauges It was fun not so much when you flip it 3 times in a row. To be that young and care free again.
Freshen up the big block and leave it. Nothing screams bad ass like a big cube nova. It’s only money need to spend it somewhere…😂😂 Great channel keep it up 👍🏻
I thought you were going to have Cecil and Beanie give that big block a once over...surely it's not quite ready for anchor status yet.
Love you guys...rock on!
Daniel... well, it ain't a Camaro and it ain't the Danmaro, that's for sure.. but.. it'll do! Let's get busy! Life's too short to waste time on stupid stuff! You and Dani are the best! BTW - they think I've whipped this cancer. I'll keep you posted! Got about 25 radiations to go! 🤗
I know it’s going to run and sound good with the new small block installed. I am excited to see DD Speed Shop car actually made to look nice.😊
Bribing Dani with ice cream to get back into her good graces. Well played Dan, well played.
Please don't rush this car, she's a nice car,dan people put your heart in this one,i thank this one will be with you for a long time, doing a great job.
Man Dan you got more ambition for pulling and replacing motors than I do 🧢 hat's off to you great job 👏
With the old school cars we like watching Dan work on, a motor swap shouldn’t take more than a full day thrash. Been there and done that. I am impressed how he has time to film and edit.
Vinyl tops seem to hold moisture, so maybe priming with pdr or someting would be helpful when you put the vinyl on.
I enjoy the practical aspect of your cars going together. I like that you don't drive unsafe cars on the road, like a bunch of yt seem to think is ok/funny.
The first vinyl roof I can remember, was mom's 68 Nova, dark green with matching color roof. I was 8 and seeing the seams on the roof made me wonder how they sewed it onto the metal! Kids, amiright ?
Ive been here since the beginning glad the nova is gonna be back on the street
Real work in a real environment with normal amount of patience, always great to see thank you😂❤
Zero patience haha
Hey Dan and Danielle, I think that you will be discovering how much better you are and how much you've learned in the last 8 years while you rebuild this Nova. Nice car by the way. Peace.
I've never had much luck with the rust converter...great progress. .I already know it's gonna sound awesome 👍
I'm back with a like. I love watching you work. LOL. Much better watching working on something you obviously care a great deal about then worry about internet critics. To thine own self be true. Deep thought. Your money, your cars, your choice. We are just D D fans. You don't need to explain. You are the hardest working person
Great to see you working on an original survivor that is soooo solid, GM all the way!
Nova's are probably my favorite cars. Can't wait to see it back on the road!😊😊
That Nova is a cool ride for sure! 😎👍
I really like how that small block sounds but big block nova’s are really cool
Nice, clean Hot Rod Dan !!! You have done a Great Job assembling that Car from a basketcase find !!! Three cheers to Mur for finding you that project !!! Getting close to countdown; Rave-On Danni and Dan !!!
The car that made me love muscle cars was my brother’s mulsanne blue 72 nova ss. Was a 350/saginaw 4speed/10 bolt posi. He put a monster solid lifter cam in it, intake, carb, Muncie rock crusher 4 speed with a competition plus shifter, and a 4.56 geared 12 bolt. It was a consistent low 12’s car on l60 bias plys spinning well past 60’ . My favorite memory was he picked me up from elementary school when I was in 2nd grade and did a burnout in front of the principal who was directing traffic. I’m now 45 and I’ll never forget that
Oh they're great cars
I had also had a Mulsanne Blue '72. She was a 307/PG, 2 door, with 38k original miles. She was MINT to be that old of a car. Sold her about 5 years ago.
Ive always pulled motor and trans separately. So much less damage, mess and stress. Then i recently built a big block foxbody. First thing i did was make a removable upper core suport. Best mod ive ever done!!!!
You and I both. Especially this Nova being a 4 speed car. Much easier then an automatic.
Dan get it running and driving and fix the roof and drive it this summer. In the winter put vinyl top on and maybe paint it if you want.
Wish I had those problems
Luv u guys
Butternut yellow is one of my favorite colors on a Muscle Car. When I was a kid, we called it Thunderbird Yellow because their was a racing team that raced 55-57 Thunderbirds back in the late 50s- early 60s. When I was 16, I was a dishwasher at a pancake house and one of the cooks had a 56 Hemi Chrysler in that color and another cook had bought a 66 Chevelle SS 396 in Safflower yellow w a Black vinyl top. It was lifted about 2" up all the way around. It screamed High Performance w Cragars and Lakewood traction bars. 👍👍
Yeah I really it and I'm not much of a yellow guy
Hey! At least the sun isn't belligerently cooking...
Can't wait to see you shifting gears again in the Nova, I think you will enjoy it more than ever with that new mill, should be running good 👍👍
The GM assembly line workers installed the SS equipment to make your Nova an SS. THE DD SPEED SHOP assembly line workers (you all) could install SS equipment on your Camaro, making it an SS.
May I suggest you continue finishing the Camaro. Do the automatic as you were thinking and try to find the correct seats if possible. You have put so much work into that car, and it looks so hot... Just relax and take your time on it...
I love the Nova Dan, she is going to be so nice! I thought you might take the core support and grill out to make the removal easier, but it actually came up out of there easier than I expected. Nice job!
Dan keep up the great content! Nova is definitely a keeper. Still cool to see the Camaro be built and now to see the Nova get some love it’s all great content! Keep it up.
Dani, you need to buy Dad a set of fender covers for Father’s Day
Love it glad you kept the nova
That cherry picker has gotten quite the workout lately 😂. Love the channel Dan!
Oya. She's a work horse
Doug here......DD Speed Shop fan.......Excited to see a build you plan on keeping AND has sentimental value. Let's see where you take this one. I'd only ask that you reconsider the vinyl top. Not a fan of those myself! They look OK but I had a '72 Nova with one.....man, that thing always needed some conditioner on her to keep her looking good. And I mean ......all....the....time....Something to think about!
John Denver and " life of"Grizzly Adams ". Priceless.!
Hello Danielle and Danny. I agree..! Don't toy with your future you. IT always ends up screwed......
Looking good can't wait to see it finish 😀
200ibls,big block is alot of weight on front end,and small block,a new rebuild fresh is great, drive so much softer, you two are doing a awesome job,i had two nova's 71and 72,396 big block and small block, love them, then 70, Chevelle, small block to 396,big block miss it to the macks,i will be following you two keep it up.
A year ago when I found this channel (thanks to ole Peg at zip ties). I went back to the beginning and watched all your videos. This nova has been one of my favorites. Glad to see it getting refurbished on.
its just right. snug as a bug in a rug. big block small car. perfect.
My run with Big blocks was a disaster. 396 drag motor in a 64 Vette would over heat at Red lights. Took it out put in 396 350 HP. Ran like crap. Built a 427 3 deuces with L88 Cam. Never ran right threw a rod out the oil pan fudging 100 mph in 3rd. I gave up. Bought a 302 Z28 mouse. Was lighter and revs like stink. Made my Corvette fun instead of a headache.
Dannie: Look Out! Your guy has another love in his life.
This Nova is quite the car overall. I look forward to seeing it as a Rally Sport was meant to be. Keep going Dan 🇨🇦
I think it’s cool that you are doing a vinyl top. I feel they are nowhere near as common on restorations as they were when these cars were new. It helps your car be different than the other novas out there
The Nova looks really nice dan
Don't feel bad Dan every one of us has a younger past self. On my Nova I have a mini starter with headers and guess what numbnut passed Vation did? I put studs with nuts and lock washers on the mini starter, after I removed the nuts and a lock washers the starter still hanging their jammed up against the header so now I have to take the header off so I can get the starter out 😅
At least it’s easy to put the starter back on 😁
Thanks for sharing this video with us
GOOD JOB U2!
Nova bay cleaned up so nice!
She’s a keeper for sure! ❤
Hell yeah! IT'S raining here too. Liquid ☀️"On My shoulder. Makes me happy.....
Gas cans! Dan likes to leave gas cans outside 😂😂
Well Dan that is one bad ass car! Love it!
Motor compartment looks great !
Hey Dan, glad to see you working on the Nova. I'm surprised with as many engines you take in and out that you don't have an air/hydraulic lift cylinder on your lift. I have been using one for over 20 years and it makes life so much easier. I don't know if you have a Harbor Freight up in Canada but somewhere around a 100$ here in the states. Just a suggestion, keep up the good work on the videos.
My favorite car on your channel!
Looks good, I’m glad to see it gettin some Luvin
Love seeing big block hotrod again! Never ever sell this car!!
a coat of paint would look great and fresh.you know it doesn't need much more than a sanding, primer and paint . this car deserves love after all this camaro drama
Gotta be honest Dan. That nova is probably my favorite car you have👍💯I did love the ratty 57👊
Yeah I dig it big time.
The Nova is looking awesome indeed. Can't for the new engine goes in the Nova SS.
Beautiful job for cleaning the engine compartment 🎉
Good content Dan, gonna be cool hot rod, would definitely be cool and very fun daily driver, excited to see how you finish this one, buddy
There is a CZcamsr out there and took a four-door Nova and converted into a two-door Nova you would find that very interesting I'm sure he's actually still in the process
Hey, Dan, I love the Nova refreshing it reminds me of my own Nova. it was a 4-speed with a line lock. with cutout exhaust. that can get you in trouble. I bought a rear spring relocation kit to get more tire clearance. I sold mine and have regretted it since. I can't wait to see what else you do to it.
I really like this car. Glad it's getting a nasty small block and 4 speed. I love the color also.
Very KOOL Dan and Dani
My favorite car. I have a 1969 nova butternut yellow
Great video liking me some Nova good job.
Love it Dan , it’s a just a more factory solid car it warrants the 435 hp motor . Nice choice
Thanks!
This perfect candidate for a snazzy dd speed shop wrap flames big bold letters loud ass zoomys
I have a soft spot for these body style Nova's . I had one in high school and that what got me in to racing and hot rodding
Damn! Now I gotta have ice cream!
Your idea of a "Beater" is a little different than mine. :D She's a peach.
Love the nova probably my favorite dd hotrod an it's finally on video getting love it needs
Dan, you did some really good work on the Nova years ago !!! I would much rather have the Nova than the Camaro !! Speaking of the POR 15, I have used it for over 25 years. It is the best you can get to cover rust. First the loose rust needs to be removed and then apply POR 15. The POR 15 must be top coated if it will receive UV light. Be careful my friend and God bless and your family !!!! Eddy
Love novas! In high school my buddy had a 68 nova SS and I had my 69 Camaro. That was a long time ago. Dan, may I suggest suspenders? My brother wears them and they work great! Pants stay above the waist…
Love your projects and channels.
You need a small power washer Dan , even a little electric one would help so much
Spray the roof with bedliner. It will texture like a vinyl top and not rust the top.
Cool as the Camaro was I’m Loving the Nova!
Love the Nova!!!
I was sad at first when you decided to sell Camaro but in the mean time I have come to love the Nova!!
Thanks for the video.
Wish I had that Big Block for my 82 C10.
Ospho (Phosphoric acid) clean with thinner and POR15 The rust on the roof! Encapsulated and saved forever!
Me, i'd have unbolted the 3 shifter bolts from the case and 3 linkage bars, but you do you Dan! Cut off wheels shouldn't just sit around.
Dude!!! Hot rodding!!! ✌️
Wood Dan here have no fear we will DD Speed shop the hell out of it just you wait. Love this nova buddy
I raced dirt circle track cars in the early 2000s-10s . It was street stock class mostly novas ,Montes and camaros but a few ford torino and even a Ranchero. The engine rules allowed the option of big block or small stock engines ( nobody was stock but mildly to heavily built ) anyway what we quickly figured out was due to weight / balance of the car, the lighter small blocks ran circles around the way more powerful big blocks .
It was shocking in some cases seeing even mild 305s slinging those big fords
Looking good.
You might want to try removing engines with the front end down and the rear of the car up on stands instead. You wouldn't have to lift the engine so high to clear the radiator support and the trans opening at the firewall would be relatively higher.
I find it easier to pull the transmission before i pull the engine, and install the engine with out the transmission attached most of the time.
Looks great 👍
Gonna be awesome!
