Epic Fail: Rebuilding a 1968 Camaro - Hitting EVERY Roadblock

- In this video, I take on the daunting task of installing a dirt cheap, used motor and transmission into the Quick Flip Camaro. Nothing went well and it fought me at every turn.
But the challenges don't stop there! Once the motor and transmission are in place, I tackle the next phase of the project: replacing body panels. Whether it's dents, rust, or simply wear and tear, refreshing the exterior of a vehicle can breathe new life into its appearance.

I think it's great seeing this video of Dan struggling clearly sick of it, and ready to throw in the towel several times right after the podcast where he was just explaining how he didn't understand how many folks could work on cars then stop mid-project without finishing. These are the days that wear on folks as time goes on, and the older you get the more it wears. Thanks for sharing the struggle!
i remember, when he got burnt out on the Black Nomad, and pushed it aside for 3 months.. yeh, as we get older, our drive to finish a project, gets sidelined, lose interest, and sometimes, just quit altogether..Your right. The Older we get----
Power on thu it guys. The end result is to get paid so you can get on to the one that you will enjoy.
I struggle on the daily haha
That one of the reasons why I follow Dan, he shows how it really is. Other people only show their perfect moments 👍🏼
I spent last weekend pulling and reinstalling a 440 in a 68 Chrysler 300. I started fitting the header’s I bought, and had to lift the engine a few inches to clear the steering, and then realized it touches the starter. Starter for a 95 Dakota is what everyone is saying works. This coming weekend is going to be bolting everything back together, and welding collectors on the exhaust. Fluids and fixing any issues I overlooked. Just turned 55 last November. I’m realizing I’m getting a bit old for this type of thing.
64 years old here--been building or working on my dads/brothers cars and trucks for 50 years--still going strong as long as God allows.
Thee Saint of the forever spinning wrench is smiling down apon you. 👍🏁
Thanks for sharing the struggles i was this way trying to shoehorn a 454 into my 77 Chevelle it didnt want to cooperate what so ever lining up Motor mounts so switched the BBC clam shells for the stock 305 ones and FIT like a glove
Awesome job on getting the engine, transmission into the 68 Camaro. Hard work is never done. Keep up the great work.
Watching you work on cars then makes me feel better when my projects don't go smoothly. 👍👍🇨🇦
Haha they never go smoothly!
Dan in my old age, I have learned if I put it back in the same place every time. Every time I never have to look for It.
Dan was definitely riding the struggle bus today. I think someone needs a vacation
Making a project car run and move under its own power is what always motivated me
this level of frustration is why DD Speed Shop is so popular. This is REAL!
It,s very cathartic to see someone else suffering, that never has right tools at hand and always has to remember were I last used them (a habit I,ve tried to break for my whole life)u definitely control ur rage better than I ever have
I think yall need to do a 30 min episode with Danny, and teach her what sockets sizes an 1/4" 1/2" 3/4" ratchets look like. I really think that would really be a hit!!! You guys work together so well!!!
Hi from Saskatoon! Just sat down for dinner and look what's on! Awesome entertainment!
Thanks!
You sure are fortunate to have a partner like Dani. Don’t forget to take some time for her away from car stuff and do some of the activities SHE likes to do too. Not saying you don’t, I only speak from lessons I’ve learned myself over the years. Your experiences may differ completely. 🙃
Dan’s quote of the video. “Probably pulled 2 motors a week for three weeks , no big deal” LOL
I mean...
@@DDSpeedShop, The best tool for a engine swap is those crank tilters. Time saver definitely.👍
It’s fun watching Dan struggle on easy things, quality entertainment!
Didn't feel easy haha
Love your entrepreneurial approach to this build...saving something for someone else.
Dan the Camaro man!
Team internet here.love the way you make it look easy to do a quality restoration 😂
I'm stoked about the back to back Camaro builds! I just know these videos are going to help me when I find my Camaro project car! 😁👍
Pushing it in ,that's your job, Dan 😂😅
Poor Dan.
If ever there was a time to stop and have a cold snack this video was is.
You know there will be better days.
Love the videos guys.
Dan my doctor said 2 year's ago I need to drink more water, so I stopped drinking sodas and eating chips and started drinking more water and I've lost a total of 60 lb
Yeah same here. Another belt notch thus week!
Thanks for going so fast I was waiting for you to start it.
Speedy D’s car sales. Where honesty is our policy, because of you get what you see on Lubetube 😂
Might not be good but I sint hiding it haha
You need to take a couple days off Dan . You don’t want to be doing that and you are making it harder and beating yourself up.
Totally buy a short bus fixer-upper and call it the DD Speedshop Strugglebus. Man, we all get those anger moments when the 'simple' things just don't go our way. Good levelheaded recovery.
Hey Dan, just wanted to say that when you start struggling and getting irritated to take 10 or 15 minutes step back take a breath grab a soda and destress. Nobody likes to get frustrated and angry working on vehicles. I know because I was a mechanic 40 years ago and man there were times when I would really fly off the handle. But a wise older man my boss John stepped in one day and told me to go across the street, get a pop and a candy bar and come back in 15 minutes. I did as he suggested and things seemed so much easier after that. He also told me that you can't let a inanimate object beat you, you have a brain and that machine doesn't. It worked for me, I have more patience when I'm working and I know when to step away. Of course I'm not trying to pump out videos for a living either. Just thought I'd share my two cents with you. Wish I lived closer and could snag up sale vehicles, but I'm in the States so kinda difficult. Keep up the good work.
Looking good!
A controlled fit was Jedi like.
Thanks for posting every day. Always my favorite and first choice. Keep up the good work.
Man what an awesome runner for someone
DD Speed Shop black floor matte!
I don't like Camaros much but I like watching everything you guys do anyway. Keep on keeping it real. Greetings from sth Australia 🇦🇺 👍 🐨🦘🐪🪃
Thanks for sharing this video with us
Temper, temper Danny lol! I learned working on these old cars when you get frustrated, walk away.
Looks like dan is getting twitterpadid!😊 I guess it is beer thirty!
This feels like when i put that clutch in the exs Golf on the street in front of the house on the weekend. You want to drag it into the bush but fight through.Neighbors love me.
Dan the floor pan man I would like to see you make a video of all your bloopers we have bad days. throwing wrenches and cussing our heads off lol
I thought that plane was zooming right over you to drop 700.00 bucks before you got happy again! Lol
Stuka dive bomber!!!!
Haha
Dd struggle bus here all 20 minutes of it 😂😂😂
Dan , maybe you could sit down, take a stress pill, and think things over - LOL. Keep them Doggies Rollin` - RAWHIDE !!! He-yahh !!!! Rave - on Danni and Dan !!!
Power through the anger Dan! 🤣🤣
❤ love your videos, awesome content😊
Great video
A trick I learned when installing a SBC with the car in the garage and not having enough space to come in from the front with the lift is to go in over the front wheel at a 90 degree angle THEN roll the car forward as you drop the engine down with the engine and trans balanced and not using a floor jack under the tranny.
Must have been a long day. Dan sounds like he needs an ice cream.
Great job Dan and Dani. Love that Camaro. You are going to be able to pull moters in your sleep.
Hey there’s a scarecrow Camaro in your garage ❤😂
Your lucky to have such a good helper .
Sometimes ya gotta let the 'MAD.D.' take over...
Just remember Dan, it's ALWAYS better to be pissed off than pissed ON...just tryin' to help.
The struggle is definitely real, glad I'm not the only one with that issue,
69 vette, 427, gives me the stink eye, everytime I look at it,
3years on getting the drivers head on, it took a 4 year old and a 9 year old to get the job done!!!
Now on to the passenger side, lol
It's always that way my shop good days and bad days
Then this is awesome that you found this 68 that's not rusted it out and you have the capabilities of putting this thing together quicker needer cooler and save this puppy cause you have all the 68 stuff plus to 67 already basically schooled you to get this one up and running. Just know this Camaro can look super cool and I'm glad you're gonna put a cowl hood on it and if you find a rear spoil that will really set it off for that hot rod look to round out the body cause if you put a flat hood on it and no spoiler that's one thing but you gotta have a cow hood and a rear spoiler to make it rock. With your excellent metal fabrication skills and twisting wrenches I know this will be fun to watch when this 68 looks super cool 0:03
I swear a transmission can sit for 7 years with no pan on it and if you move it it drips.
Some kind of magic box.
Great progress! ❤️😎
Dd speed yea bra ❤❤love from Australia 🇦🇺🤘🤘
Look at them 882's!! You know what that noise is! It's the airport behind the Gardens. It's only a mile away!
Dan, you show me that I am not the only mechanic that has bad days working on cars.
Dan once you put the motor mount bolts in the header will be off the steering head
The 4bbl Holley carb is a mileage master, it's only rated at 450 cfm. These were popular replacements for the Q-jet after the second energy crisis in 1979.
Danielle is such a positive person...
She really keeps your spirits up
All that struggle to get the motor in cause you didn't want to move the jack stands now thats entertaining
Dan, for as many nights as you spend in the garage, I can’t believe this was the first time I saw visible frustration bordering on anger. I can’t believe it hasn’t happened sooner. Looked like a great night to close the doors, hop in the SoMadd, and get you and Dani creamy chocolate chills at Tim Horton’s.
Glad I've never had a single day in the garage like that...
long time subscribers got to say loved the video
Dan, i found out a long time ago when i had numerous hot rods like you do. When you get all ruffled up on one and its not going the way you want, take one of the other hot rods out for a beat cruise! (I suggest the nomad, supercharger noises calm the soul lol) and when you get back youll be in a better mood and have a bunch of motivation! Give er a try!
Absolutely. 60% of the time, it works every time. You need a car or bike that you can beat on for an hour to get the cobwebs out of your brain.
And the struggle continues!!
We have all been there sometimes as smooth as butter next time everything goes wrong ! 😂
back at another camaro. nice .. might as well so u dont loose all the parts u found already for the last one and this ones way more solid.. stay cool .. i got white t yesterday :D
I suggest we call it "The Chaos Camaro"
This kinda convinces me to avoid Camaros! I didn’t have nearly this much trouble dropping a small block into my 74 Vega! Lol
Dan, you're such a maestro!
I have to hand it to you Dan you are the master at creating content. Making an easy job turn into what looks to be an impossible job and then when it looks like all is lost it falls into place. A real art form. Making sure that the engine hoist wouldn't fit around the jack stands was a genius move and really added to the drama. I have admit that I did have to pause the video several times because my neck was hurting from shaking it from side to side as I watched you struggle. Keep up fighting the good fight buddy! BTW these comments all in fun. Take care.
This is just too funny I have had days like that 😊
Effin leaf blowers!
🗿💨 its common to crack the trans- dipstick tube when its not bolted on engine. They crack at where dipstick tube enters trans. Been enjoying the Camaro content Dan, thanks 👍 Peace ✌️
On the next episode, Dan starts to fall in love with the ‘68 Camaro and decides to keep it 😂😂😂
I've never seen someone struggle so bad putting in a sbc especially with no front clip in the way. And put some damn hydraulic fluid in that damn hoist!!!
Dan! Time to take a break! Hit a couple car shows or something. Watching you struggle is wearing me out. I still dont know how you keep up the pace.
Ok, i wont stop by randomly. Or maybe i will. 😂
K, i wont.
I realize that things have moved forward since this video was recorded, hopefully Dan will get his second wind and end up putting
the car into a state that prospective buyers will find attractive.
Yes Sir!!!
Wife sits with me from time to time she said it’s nice to see Daniel put the girls away😅
Hey Dan, great videos. I'd be interested in the shifter in the back of your truck if your not going to use it on the camaro project. Keep it up, I'm a tri 5 guy too.
Sometimes it doesn't pay to get put of bed, walk away. Come back later and boom. Bob's your uncle.
Future Dan wants to go on power tour and its frustrating present Dan. 😃
Come on! Dan, you're a fabricator. You can fabricate something up that the tires fit in so you don't need the jack stands or just use some blocks to put the tires on in the long run, it'll make your life easier
I have everything for the front drum brakes for the front of that.
You pay for the ride and you can have it all
I gotta give you kudos for struggling thru and Kudos to Danielle for laughing and filming along ..... my tantrums are loud and my vocabulary is not fit for children so basically I'm a 2 year old with a sailors mouth and my wife just about turns and avoids me like the plaque when I'm not acting like a "Mature Adult" oh and yeah I do occasionally throw things. At least Dans fits dont offend Danielle and he keeps smiling thru it all.
👍👍
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ It looks like you deserve an ice cream Dan 😋 if I were being videoed as frustrated as you were the entire video would be bleeped from profanities 😂 great job is always guys 👍✌️🇺🇲
Time for a tool round up.
Wish I could afford one of your running cars, but right now I'm getting effective for my home
Another Camaro? You must have stuck your finger in lamp sockets quite a bit as a kid Dan (and never learned that it hurts)! Enjoying your pain with a smile on my face!😄
Where is the Incredible Hulk when you need him?
Good practice next one will be easier lol😂
If monster garage were still on I'd put Dan alone on a build and guarantee he would get it done in time.
You sure made that look hard.
Dan Dan your a baaaaaadman..you just don't quit,
I bid $701 🤣. Sleep it off Dan, tomorrow is a new day!
