  • This is an audio recording from off Blanton Lane in Pleasure Ridge Park, Louisville, KY. We went under a tornado warning a little after 4 AM on January 30, 2013 as an intense squall line with rotation moved through. Several minutes afterwards, a second tornado warning was issued for the northeastern part of the county and a severe thunderstorm warning for winds in excess of 80 MPH was also issued for the same area. The sirens sounded a total of 5 times. The roar heard during the second activation is from straight line winds. No tornadoes touched down in our county that day, but there were some weak ones that did touch down across the river in Indiana. The siren ambiance gets a lot better from the third activation onward, because the wind changed direction, causing more sirens to be heard. Sirens heard are Thunderbolt 1000T's, a fiew distant 2001's, and possibly a distant 3T22 winding down in places. In the clip at the end, you can hear one of the Whelens at the Rohm and Haas plant in Rubbertown sounding in Alert, giving the all clear, which the city's sirens do not do.

Nothing like waking up at 4AM to a whole bunch of Thunderbolts going off for a tornado warning.

It's one of the things I've always imagined when still used to live by Harper Woods

That actually happened to me once. One dark night in July of 2018, the forecast called for rain or mild thunderstorms. The storm that was expected to be mild suddenly and quickly grew in size and strength without warning, right as it was about to enter our county. This caught the National Weather service off guard. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was quickly issued, but the fast-moving storm had already entered our county by the time the warning went out. Due to the lack of advance notice, one town in our county woke up to 90 mile per hour sustained winds.
After being informed of the high winds by the town fire chief, our county EMS decided to activate all sirens in the county around 4:00 AM to warn everyone else of the incoming storm. When the sirens activated, the storm was only three minutes away from the house I lived in at the time. No damage was suffered in my town because the storm turned at the last second, but it was still a very frightening experience. Making the siren activation more frightening is the fact that my town has a 1000T on chopper level 7. It is very close to my old house, and it was pointed directly at my bedroom when it activated. Let's just say that it jolted me out of bed!
That night is still very fresh in my mind, and it is one that I will never forget for as long as I live. Just hearing the first Thunderbolt activate in this video brings back memories of that night.

Update: The NWS has confirmed that an EF0 tornado did cross over from Harison County, IN into Jefferson County, KY. It did more damage in Indiana than it did here.

By far my favorite ambience on CZcams, I hope this video is here forever I often come back to use it to sleep.
Most of, if not all of these sirens are still here in fact a lot of the Jefferson county system has held up well

I know it's scary because it's a tornado warning but those things actually sound really pretty!

The Whelen apparently does sound for tornado warnings, but I've never heard it sound during a warning myself because the wind usually doesn't blow from that direction until we're on the back side of the storm. The Whelen does Whoop for plant emergencies, but I'm not sure what the tornado warning signal is. It could be fast wail though, because they tested it in fast wail last month. They also use air horn as a fire signal.

I knew the weather was going to get bad, so I stayed up until the storms passed. This recording is from my grandpa's back porch, and I had him put the mic on the porch and let the recorder run all night. I was safe in the basement at my dad's, and my grandpa didn't go outside during the storms.

Does the Whelen also sound for Tornado Warnings too and yes it would be very confusing if anybody lived near that Whelen to hear it go off for a All Clear has there been any complaints or confusion about it and would the policy change for that siren anytime soon
