Bringing An Abandoned Gold Mine Back To Life: Part 19 of ?

- Winter may be receding, but it is still cold on the mountain. A somewhat pleasant day or two at the gold mine will be followed by a week or two of freezing winds and even snow still! This was a long winter and it seems like it is fighting hard to live on for as long as possible. We have seen no sign of the squirrels yet. I hope they made it through this winter.
Speaking of life and making it…
As some of you know, I worked as a war journalist for about a decade. Therefore, I’m no stranger to seeing pictures or video of people that I knew before they were killed. However, it still has an impact on me every time. It’s difficult for me to articulate, but there’s something poignant about the images that don’t seem significant at the time, but take on so much significance later when you look back and realize that you were seeing the final days or moments of someone…
I mentioned to a friend that I had come across footage of Matt when I was working on this video. He responded in a half-joking fashion that I should sensationalize the thumbnail to something like “RIP Matt - His Final Days” or some other clickbaity nonsense because other big CZcams channels would. I realized that he was right, but it had never even occurred to me to do that… And I won’t do that. I’m not saying that I am a saint, but I am weary of the self-promotion and clickbait that seems to have infected the mine exploring community on CZcams over the past couple of years.

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Rest easy Matt, hope you hit it big on the other side
Love all these updates, looking forward to the mystery section!
Sorry for the loss of your buddy, nice that you found some footage of him
Sorry for your loss, Rest in peace Matt.
It might be worth the time to get some old tires and lace them together with cable or chain to make some absorption mass to protect your workshop. like how they use a blasting mat on construction sites, except you'd only have to make 5 single collums. drill some anchor points in the back and hang them in front of the blast so you don't get high speed debreis flying around in there. if you hang them as close as you can to the first shot, you could even just put some more anchors back towards the track and hoist them up out of the way while you slush. they just need to make a curtin to isolate that working area while you blast. if you want a second safety to hold them up just nail some end plates on either side of that blast chamber and you can drop a board in they can sit on
shouldn't take more than a day to set up and you said you were waiting on the bore team anyways. old tires are free and the rest of that gear definitely isn't
Good intell
the mine manager at a long disused gold mine used to have a small electrowinning cell that the mine water flowed through on the way out, made of corrugated copper sheets and carbon rods out of the 1.5v dry batteries, got a lot of gold that way. also used to remove and replace stulls fron old sections where there was wet mineralisation deposits. took the old stulls home, dried them, burned them in a slow combustion stove, and got gold out of the ashes with mercury, these days you could probably use chlorine
Rest in Peace Matt and a last Glück Auf on your way to the other side.
Thank you for the update of the mine projekt.
You all did a big amount of work to bring that mine back to live.
By the way trust your engenier.
At the Rammelsberg we have this costruktion too since 1970 and ii still in good shape.
😊
I wish you all Glück Auf
Yours Frank Galetzka
Hallo, it's my first time commenting, I'm from South Africa. So glad I found this on CZcams, it's so awesome to see what you are doing, I watched all the videos I could watch on Monday, couldn't stop! And just now your new video came through...
I worked in a SA gold mine as a miner/blaster for 9 years 1987-1996, now you can understand why watching you equip and fix up this old mine brought old memories back. When I started on the mine we did "Opening Up" that was exactly what you are doing opening up old mine tunnels replacing everything again...
I'm really sorry about Matt, my condolences to all of you.
Hope the next video will be very soon.
Thanks I'm Dudley
Condelences to Matt's friends and family.
Blasting a new drift and maybe connecting to older workings? Exciting!
Need to find a way to assemble some ladders and see where that vent pipe goes!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Algorthim making me miss my all-time favorite series!!! Well I am hear now, evev if it is six days late. Great video as always!
Great work with the footage of your progress. Sorry for the loss of your crew member!!
This update shows a lot of progress! Very sorry for Matt's passing, of course. That has to weigh on everyone involved in your mining operation. Great work with your footage and it will be interesting to see what you find near the top of that stope! Please, stay safe!
I know this work is unbelievably hard, dirty, and dangerous but I would retire from the phone company tomorrow, sell all my stuff, and drive out west to work on an operation like this. Dream job.
Saw the notification on my phone and I'm here for a like and a comment for now for the 'ol algorithm, but I'm hype to watch this when I get home from work
Nice to see Some one Respectfully Remembered R.I.P. Matt !!!
Sorry for the loss of your co-worker, J. He was way too young.
Yes, a long winter....been wandering around in this area since 1976 and don't remember one quite this stubborn. Can't believe we ran the AC last weekend and went back to the wood stove yesterday. Nuts. The first welder I bought was a Lincoln buzz box, a bit newer than yours but similar. Ran a lot of rod through that old beast, it still works fine. Taught my sons to weld with it.
Figures the geologist would manage to pick a spot to go that makes the most work for the people doing the work. I suspect you guys are used to that.
Mining innovation..good stuff!
Thank you for posting this footage of Mat, I miss my little brother more than I can express. 🫶🏽 rest easy, dude.
Thank you. I was hoping that some that knew him would get a chance to see it...
@@TVRExploring I have a couple tribute videos on my channel as well of him if anyone wants to check them out. ❤️ he was such a great guy, our family is devastated over his passing. Thank you again!
@@RuizGirlz Hopefully, I have some additional footage of Mat in the remaining videos I have from his time there. I had forgotten that he was present that day we moved that equipment underground for the drillers, for example, until I was editing the video... There was a day that Mat, another miner and I performed a miracle with ropes and winches to free a trapped ore car, which I REALLY hope I captured at least some of on camera.
A lot of viewers have left really nice comments about Mat...
Sorry to hear about Matt. Y'all should name the new drift after him. As always stay safe and stay strong out there
Very sorry for the passing of one of your team Justin. I am glad that you do not fall for the clickbait option.
May you rest in peace Matt. Too many leave this world too early!
I hope you can show the blasting and clean up process punching that drift
Sorry for your loss. But thank you for the great shots of the mine
matt didnt look very old another taken to soon hope he is watching over you all..
i perhaps dont say it often enough but all the video is much appreciated you are showing me an invisible world and bring to life some of earths wonders cheers..
Loving the updates on the mine you are showing us mate all very interesting 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for this vid and acknowledging Matt in a respectful way, clickbaiting has gotten ridiculous throughout Y/T as a whole.
I am from the Gold Country too, Placer County to be somewhat precise, it is good to see the views and sunshine outside too.
A very interesting video again, i wonder what is too discover next, and sorry too hear Matt is no more, he was still very young, sometimes death comes as a surprise, and sometimes it is expected, but it always feels too soon.............................
Shaping up nicely, so excited for future updates.
12:20 RIP Matt The Miner, God bless your family and Thank you for sharing this
Wow, that's really a trip. Thank you for showing this.
Thank you for the update and the welding machine I have used one just like it built to last.
So sorry for the loss of your buddy Matt. He was really young. The video was very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Been watching your channel for quite a while. Enjoy what you do and I am always glad to see that you don't go it alone like some people. Sorry to hear about Matt, may he rest in peace.
Lots of stuff going on for the length of video. Jam packed indeed. Thanks for sharing Justin. Sounds like lots of interesting things coming up. Very sorry to hear of the passing of your fellow miner. Hope you and yours are well.
GLAD TO SEE Y'ALL BACK IN THE MINE!!!!
Stoked to see you punch that drift. Its awesome watching this mine come back to life.
Sorry for your loss. RIP Matt...
Good luck guys. Thanks for the video
Sorry about your buddy. I'm glad you have some video with him, I'm sure that will mean more than you'd think to his family and friends.
We had a guy named Matt on the crew down here, he worked the conventional mine down the road and the rubber-tire mine we're operating now. Everyone called him Mongo after the character from Blazing Saddles; he'd one-hand 8x8 shaft sets and was a hell of a mine carpenter. He died in an ATV wreck in 2021.
My father has a really old welder just like that one these arc welders are beasts and they keep on working you guys need to preserve that one
Still the coolest series on CZcams
Just wish there was more videos of working in this mine!!
I'm sorry about Matt. He looks young; that's sad. Thanks for pointing him out
RIP Matt. Could you tell me how many work in this mine and when the mine was originally started. (I’m an old fart and have watched the old episodes but forgotten 🤣) Love watching the documentary as it’s a chance to see new methods compared to the old ones. I’ve a lot of respect for miners and what they achieved. 😁👏🇦🇺
13:35 I love the sounds of the mine.
So sorry for your loss 😪
Condolences for Matt. Too young to pass.
This content is really cool, watching this development work is fascinating to watch.
surprised that instead of smaller explosive loads you didn't suggest going old school: dig the "short" distance with a pick ax....ha! evidently they went great distances doing it that way as you have shown us.
In my younger days, we used scaffold poles with a rope attached to the top, to reach higher levels in mines. Kept joining poles until we got the rope to the top 🙂
The problem with that is that we have nothing solid to anchor from on the spot where we were standing and there are a number of obstacles in the way if we were to try and brace ourselves off of the floor of the adit. It's a tricky one.
Thank you ! Makes me wish I was 30 years younger... (Sorry for your loss).
Get a painters exstenstion pole and attach a video camera to inspect hard to reach areas. Take a look int a Siuerra blaster, low power blasting system, works quite well for smaller rock busting.. Sorry to hear about Matt,Prayers.
Others would have been ruthless and baited people with the tragic loss of a young mans life.
My condolences to those who knew him.
This is one of my favourite things to watch here.
I there more footage on the P-app?
Those core drillers working another 19 days means that‘s somewhere in the range of 200k? I can‘t recall how many there were but that wasn’t cheap.
Thank you
That painting alone, would make me quit the mining 😁
Haha, yeah, you've got to love senseless rules...
OOoohhh actual mining very cool ....that old welder probably still works ....
Sorry to hear about Matt, my thoughts to his family
Deepest sympathy to Matts family and friends and workmates, that is sad at such a young age.Justin does a company own the mine or privately owned?Watched all 19 and enjoyed the lot, thankyou.
Really cool dude hope you come across a prosperous vein.
I think everyone (myself included) would be shocked if we did...
@@TVRExploring Forgot to mention I'm sorry about your friend man.
We used to have a idealarc 250 just like yours , damn good welder
I'm sorry to hear that man.
Sorry about what happened to your buddy Matt. He looked too young to pass away.
Very good to see something is being done to the flooding situation. That grouting should certainly keep it nice and dry.
Sad to see the guy go, he looks like he was very young. I wonder what happened to him.
Good luck with the mine. I believe it is going somewhere, and by what I've seen thus far; I think there may be a profit to be made. Hopefully you did the calculations right on how much ores are in the ground, and how rich these ores are. Gold its value is as high as it as ever been. So, you can go pretty far to get it and still make money.
Greetings,
Jeff
Glad to see the follow up, condolences on your fellow miner though(RIP Matt).
Not to kill any suspense your building here, but did you get into what you thought was a level at the ventilation pipe?
RIP matt
RIP Miner Matt
Your body looked very young… Sorry for your loss
Well, first my condolences . . . as for the video it is always interesting to see how far you have come in reinvigorating the old mine. Unbelievable what you guys have done. Looking back at the first video and this one is just proves it.
It's definitely come a long way...
that mine makes a lot of water
I would've thought the engineer would recommend blast mats to lay over the face to slow back blast shockwaves etc.
Not that Common these days, used to be made of sisal or hemp ropes (A use for old shipping ropes used to tie up ships at dock. Aunt stitched together.
Rest In Peace Matt
Seen it all painting wet sets. Wow
You've gotta love it...
What other than a little more explosives, and little more time, would've been the difference between moving 50 or 60 feet either side of the work station.
I mean honestly, engineers sometimes remind me of Dr's, and they forget whose working for whom.
They think that even though we have years of experience in whatever trade we may be in, that we're several layers of intelligence below their superior piece of wall decoration claims they've got over normal human beings.
For ever time I've had to teach those types thar just because the theories aren't always the reality of real world everyday practices.
That what they have on a piece of paper with their firms stamp on it does not work, because there's not enough room for half of what they all want to stuff into the space.
Something applies to what they say doesn't work, because this or that book says it doesn't.
But in reality it works fine if done in the appropriate manner, and you may have done it many times before.
well said......only thing they are missing is the white coat........then there would be no questions even allowed.......lol
Very well said!
Nothing that I can see. Sure it would cost a little more on paper, but any savings will be wiped out if the 1600 station gets blown to hell and needs to be retimbered.
May I suggest using an airless paint sprayer rather than trying to roll it? Looking really good so far guys!
4:35 is your Geologist studying this vein or is it known from records to be played out?
6:11 lol paint wet wood with flame resistant paint, MSHA(?) is giving me flashbacks to the Army.
This area has not been drilled before. So, the geologist is studying the vein. The comparison to military logic is apt!
Lol, so long as they don't start requiring ID10T Forms!!
@@jamesthompson8008 Hey private go to the commo shack and ask for a can of squelch!
Sorry about your buddy man thats rough.
Im curious as to the cost of the cores and how its billed if you dont mind me asking?
Fallen friends, wish we could live longer.
Don't trust old rope with your good health. Time and abuse of the rope could be catastrophic to you.
The biggest risk of the equipment at the 1600 is probably that tank. The air pressure wave from the blast is going to hit that tank on its side, the worst direction. If the tank is pressurized it might help keep it from collapsing. But it also needs to be anchored to the floor and braces against the wall or all the connected piping can get broken if the tank moves.
Are tram car derailments still a daily problem? Or have the problem sections of track been fixed up to reduce such events?
my condolences did matt go with you on other explores?
Man, it looks like you have a trout stream. Mo money, mo money, mo money!
I used to use a welder just like that one.
Where do you get the yellow ventilation bag from ?
R.I.P Matt 1 ❤ =^~^=
Think airless sprayer. Maybe an alcohol based paint. Doubt water based will ever dry. A non flamable fabric coating would be better
Matt looked young. What happened to him?
MSHA - Please paint the waterlogged wood timbers so they don't burst into flame. Yep, sounds about right - government mandated waste of time and money that serves zero purpose other than to allow them to say they're doing something.
Safety is important but when safety becomes stupidity it gets annoying and expensive both in time and money!
Where is your mine located? Looks like north California or sw Oregon
Northern California.
Should put bright led lights through out mine
Let his soul Rest In Peace
Jeff Williams thinks that is mine is Justin‘s!
what is the mineral of value in this mine? GOLD?
chose what you do wisely not for 'the' money only
Is the train electric?
Yes it’s Electric: that big box in front of the Driver with the fire extinguisher on it… is where the huge batteries live!!! The driver controls the forward and reverse with one lever connected to a rheostat that operates a DC Motor.
It is very similar to an electric golf cart only bigger and on rails or an electric fork lift without the lift and on rails.
It's so quit!
Condolences concerning Matt! /(-_-)\
See ya at the exit portal Matt!
Cause of death ?
You hiring?
We were desperate for people in 2021 (good pay, no experience needed), but I'm sorry to say that we're not hiring now.
RIP Matt. Was he jabbed?
well said my friend!😢
all but 1 pallet of the grout got wet and totally ruined....30k wasted
That's how you do it!
