On the hunt for the fabled "best driving road in the world" James May has his second bit of bad luck of the day. Forced to bunk down in their cars for the night Jeremy offers the boys some bizarre drinks to help them sleep. Finally the Transfăgărășan Highway comes into view and Jeremy's Aston Martin DBS Volante, Richard's Ferrari California and James' Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder proceed with joy.

Richard- "What a finale to our grand tour"
Little did they know their "grand tour" was yet to come
haha nice one
what do you mean?
The Grand Tour is the trios Amazon Prime show
@@sauravjyotimedhi, he means that from that road to the nearest airport they have a very long and SAD way to go.
*:o*
Drove this road in July 2022 during sunset in a Fiat 500. Even saw a bear on the way down. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of my life. Cheers from Singapore :)
Only one bear? Must have been a slow day, I think in 2022 I saw like 10 in 2 trips around Romania.
I want a fiat 500, too but it is too expensive around here
Old Fiat 500 or new Fiat 500?

10/10 for Jeremy, Richard but above all else and especially for his choice of car James May.

Why wouldn’t he? It’s the most beautiful car ever produced
Ahh yes, the days when helicopters were used instead of drones to capture aerial shots.
JAMamation thinking the same
IMMO Lab or maybe because this scene was a bit too old for a drone. Maybe drones existed back then but they weren't as good, cheap and widely spread as nowadays.
Using a drone is much cheaper and easier and way less dangerous for the cameraman and the crew members as if something bad happened to the chopper it might cause deaths . So drones are much better but this scene reminds me of older days. (Not too old days but at least older)
IMMO Lab of course they were cheaper but it seems they were not practical.
Who used a drone back in 2012 to film anything. Maybe the issue was with the camera quality and not only the drone or the drones' battery or maybe it's connectivity (it not being able to connect to the remote from far away places like nowadays)
@IMMO Lab it's the BBC.. public money is free to them
In just 10 years the cameraman and the pilot are pretty much rendered useless thanks to drones. In this day and age you have to keep yourself up to date professionally to even stand a chance of surviving this grim world.
I will miss these three old fool, I will miss the old top gear.
They're doing the same thing ob Amazon, you can watch it in November
They have full creative freedom on Amazon. They'll be better than ever!
They'll also need to be careful of lawsuit for copyright infringement from BBC, that's what is scaring me the most

Drove the Transfagarasan specifically because of this episode. Absolutely magnificent. :-)
What do you see so magnificent in a slow , overtaking forbidden, one lane ,very long crowded road and very slow speed regulated by cops. The footage was shot when the road was closed and traffic rules didn't count. We romanians could just dream of driving like that anywhere in here, the cops and rules of traffic are just surreal.
The speed limits now are way too low even for that classic dacia
The police now are literally hunting supercar owners to take they're licensees away. The police have more radar cars and equipment than Ambulance 🚑
And the sad part is supercar owners are just a very small part of the population so they have no chance of speaking up to the government 😕
Yes it is amazing mostly in real life

This footage and the whole episode of Top Gear in Romania will hopefully put the country on the world map in terms of people's minds and hopefully encourage more people to visit the country.
The other thing I noticed about the Transfargarsan Highway was just how stunningly beautiful the scenery is. Reminds me a little bit of Scotland.

I am going next week with my partner who is Romanian and yes, the carpathians are almost like a grander scale version of places in glencoe or on the western isles. It's a beautiful place and so are the people
I don't want you tourists here stay away.
I can't help but feel like the country has recently been getting more and more recognition in a sense. I don't know why, but I feel like it's that way.
I am proud to be a romanian and i am happy that some people love the things our country has to offer. And Transfagarasan is nothing compared to Transalpina but here is only a matter of taste. The whole country has a lot of beautiful things to offer.

@@coolmojito Yes, plenty of bears. They seem harmless, just waiting to be fed by tourists. I felt very safe in Romania. Great roads with little traffic. Heaven for motorcyclists. Police are very friendly too.

The Vidraru dam was not built by soviets! The communist leaders ordered it and was bulit by Romanians in the ‘60 as the 5th in Europe, now the 16th tallest in the world.
Transfăgărășan was also initiated by the communist party in the 70’, this time Ceașescu, as a strategic military route.
Nice to see that after 7 years, the conditions from this video improved, the roads are better, Transalpina was reopened (which is a lot more challenging to drive expecially from the south -steeper, reaching 2145m highest point).

,no,but there wether can change very fast.I was there in july,at Vidraru Dam(where they slept over night) in was sunny, and on the top of the mountainm is was raining and 10 degrees Celsius :)

The road is closed during the winter months because is too dangerous for driving. It climbs very high in the Fagaras mountains, so is covered in snow, black ice, one simply cannot drive on it in winter. Unless you trying to commit suicide, in which case, the burned wreck off your car will be found after 4 months, in spring, when road re-opens.
Usually is not a very traveled route, especially in spring and fall, but in summer, is a real driving experience. Trucks and high tonnage vehicles can't use it, its a strictly cars only road, as far as I know.
