Removing deep scratches from caravan or motorhome windows

  • In this video I share a technique of getting rid of bad scratches from caravan or motorhome windows. For small marks there are plenty of products available to polish them out, but if you have a deep score on the window surface, this method will allow you to remove any evidence of the mark from the window. This method does not include any specialised equipment, but there are some bits of kit you will need for this remedy. All these products are available from Halfords if you are out and about this weekend.

    👍 Dan. In 2002 on my fathers 1984 two berth Sprite had from new when retiring I used T-Cut in circular motions to polish away surface blemishes from over the years and the windows came up like new. No really deep scratches as with your knife. Everyone amazed that elbow grease and a simple product had such a very positive effect and finish to such old windows.

    Thanks Dan. Timely info for us newbies. We damaged a wing mirror and got a terrible scratch all the way down the side of our camper when driving home in the dark on a narrow lane. Random branch! It has polished out of the paintwork, but we were clueless for the windows.

    Great video. I used this technique to remove the haze left by a window sticker. I also used it to remove the melted surface on the caravan washroom basin due to the previous owners hair straighteners! My next task is to remove the discolouration on the basin. With a bit of luck I might only need to use Fenwicks for that.

    I have successfully used wet and dry paper, brasso and elbow grease, applied with an old pair of underpants. Also, very good on the surface of plastic caravan sinks.

    We had a problem with scratches on an acrylic bath and a plumber suggested we polish them out with Brasso metal polish wadding, it worked a treat, so I thought I would try it out on my scratched acrylic motorhome windows and it did the trick, you would not know they had been scratched. I washed the window as soon as I had finished with the Brasso as I am not sure if there are any chemicals in it that could cause problems.

    Hi Dan quality tip fella, just add my twopenneth, "box" the scratch using masking tape, try and avoid rubbing the tape, increase box size by 25mm as you go through the different grades. You will always hit the scratch, and you won't rub an excessive area.
    All the best

    We use a flame polisher at work for the edges of cut acrylic sheets. This makes them smooth and clear on the edges so I wonder if maybe a very quick shot from a blast gas type cigarette lighter would work on them small chips? I don't know but if I had a spare window I'd try it, just be careful of burning the acylic/polycarbonate and putting a brown mark in it....that would be bad lol

    And what if I wanted to get rid of all these minor little scratches, visible on most of the caravan windows, done by the dust, at cleaning etc .... an old goodie caravan.

    I've got a question/problem...
    One sunny day I made the mistake of fastening a temporary screen to my window using rubber suction stickers. The heat from the sun must have intensified behind the stickers and a million tiny cracks appeared in the exact point where the suckers were. Got any ideas on how I can remove them or mask them.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Max, its highly possible you've caused some of the acrylic to separate or stress, i would think that no end of buffing or polishing would get rid of this, ive seen stressed acrylic, and this never returns back to its former glory.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  Před 2 lety

      Hi Pete, For swirls and any light scratches - i tend to use a decent car polish. Something that has a bit of cut in it, enough to remove the very fine abbrassion, but not cut too deep. Apply in straight lines, so you dont add to the swirl effect and that should do the trick!
      Hope that helps
      Dan
