  • I flew to California to test ride the latest descendant of the Harley Sportster lineage: the Harley NIGHTSTER 975 - some of the things Harley did to make this bike more nimble, easier to handle, were INSANE - things I’ve yet to see anyone else do in a bike - making you feel like a way better rider than you might actually be. Here is my review on the first test ride.

    I've learned to appreciate a low center of gravity. My Honda NC700X has the has tank under the seat & the engine lays down almost horizontal. It feels like 400 pounds not 472. If it drops I can pick it up even though I'm old & have a bad back & weak ankles. I'd take a good look at this Nightster if it were in my budget. I thought I'd be on a smaller bike by now but not yet. This Nightster & Sportster S breaks an old stereotype. People said Harleys were about styling but not engineering. Now they are about both. Great revue! Thank you.

      The first, and only Harley I've owned, is a 2005 1200 Sportster Roadster. It replaced a 1982 Suzuki GS850G, and currently has a little more than 82,000 miles on it. Consider this a "long-term review".
      There's nothing on a Harley that can't be fixed by add-ons. I added highway pegs, stainless steel braided brake lines, windshield, Sundowner seat, luggage rack/sissy bar, saddlebags, and Progressive suspension. I'm 6'4", 300 pounds, and the bike fits me perfectly.
      Quality and reliability have been quite Japanese. When I was in field service I rode a lot, and got 15,000 miles from the original rear tire and 25,000 out of the front. Fuel economy is better than the Japanese inline fours I owned, getting 60 mpg at 60 mph and 55 mpg at 70 mph.
      Maintenance costs are far less than the Big Twins. The drive belt snapped at about 74,000 miles. It took me about one hour to replace it. I replaced the ignition switch (wore it out!), clutch and throttle cables at 75,000 miles.
      The new Nightster looks to be a good value for now, until people start riding them and having issues.
      The wild card is product support. Harley is closing dealerships left and right and there's no guarantee that the dealer you buy from will be there tomorrow.

    If anyone is wondering what’s in the space of the “false tank” it’s the air box usually. Yamaha has done this with bikes like the r6 and MT bikes. More bikes than not are using “false tanks” these days to keep the weight low. The big difference her is instead of putting a tube up to the gas filler cap they moved the cap backwards and down too, which is neat and interesting…not sure it saves much weight over Honda’s or Yamaha,s or triumphs approach but I love hidden gas caps because it reminds me of old 50s cars so I’m all for Harley’s move here

    The Suzuki Boulevard 1500 has had the fuel tank under the seat for since 1970's. I owned two 1500 Boulevards over 20 Years. But I have to admit. It was actually harder for me to take a curve. I could lean into the curve with any kind of speed like I can with the gas tank high in normal position. I felt I was going to go off the to the side of the road quite a few times. I had to learn to slow down to get the bike to lean into the curve. I have had a Harley Street Bob, and Harley Heritage now that I have no trouble taking the curves with the gas tank high center of gravity. That 35 - 40 lbs of gas makes a difference up high. But I agree the low tank makes the bike feel like a 750 CC bike.

    Your Street Triple, being 70 lbs lighter, has more hp than the Nightster. Not to mention you can get the current version of that Triumph, the top spec RS for less than the msrp of the Nightster. I’m sure it’s a fun bike to ride, just wish HD would produce an actual performance bike.

      doubtful they will 👀 Cruisers outsell every other bike in the US by a large margine 👀 people who buy Harleys also hate plastic, the turn signals and little covers on the Nightster is getting criticism already. 🤓 adventure bikes are very popular right now so they released the PanAm and shelved the Bronx. Japanese bikes will always be cheaper too especially the ones built in Thailand so Harley wont win in that area either way. the Indian FTRs are not selling well in my area for example 👀 im pretty sure they will release a smaller PanAm before making a streetfighter and probably will will not make a sportbike anytime soon 👀

    This is the first video I watched of yours, and I look forward to watching more of them!
    I recently purchased a 2022 Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster, and this bike seems like Harley’s version of that bike in a lot of ways. In other words, if this was out earlier, it would’ve been a serious contender, but I love pretty much everything about the triumph speedmaster, so the Nightster will have to wait quite a while. Have you ever ridden a Speedmaster? If so, what are your thoughts? Actually, I will research your videos and see if you have one that will answer those questions. :-)
    Cheers!

      Ouch. For 12% more money you get the Sportster S with 27% more power and all of the tech package, The Nightster might draw your eye but the Sportster S will draw your wallet. I know, I already spent money on the seat and tail tidy. So you might ask "Well why buy a bike if I want to change it". What do you do when you buy a Harley anyway? You change the pipe, the seat and the bars... Because you can. The Nightster was marketed as a bike to be modified. You can get a better bike and modify it anyway with the Sportster S for a better compatible price.

    • @MrEiniweini
      @MrEiniweini Před 2 lety

      @Steve Malzone Each to their own taste I guess, I actually like the look of the Sportster S more. It looks like a staffy, all muscle and teeth. With the handling the Sportster S is a little unique in that it is designed to perform better when you get it into a tighter corner and is hard to get the feel of on a test ride (having the bike drop off that front peak and onto the side still freaks me out a little after four months).
      I can't compare the ergonomics because each dealer got one model for display in Australia and will not get more models until about 9 months. I sat on it and preferred the ergonomics initially with the Sportster S. I like the forward controls. Having said that I am about to completely change the ergonomics anyway with the Corbin seat and the reach bars.
      For me the parts I can't change on the bike are the determining factor for purchase, so handling and power are weighed against each other. 99% of my time is riding in a straight line, power wins.

    • @MrEiniweini
      @MrEiniweini Před 2 lety

      @Steve Malzone Absolutely, go with the bike you prefer. Fantastic that you are thinking about the Nightster if that is the bike for you. I am actually kind of happy about it. I loved the HD move into the ADV bikes and it paid off for them. I loved the Sportster S and the target of bringing in riders from outside of the traditional Harley rider (I am that). I worry that the Nightster is a misfire and actually having someone say they would prefer that bike sends me into rapture.
      It is from a personal perspective I guess. I spent a full year looking for just the right mid size cruiser and settled on the Rebel 1100. Two days before I ordered it Harley announced the Sportster S and on the Friday I was planning to walk into the Honda dealership, I walked into the Harley dealership instead to buy a concept. If Harley had announced the Nightster instead, I would be the proud owner of a Rebel 1100. Value for money the Sportster hits the mark for me. It compares in price to both European and Japanese naked bikes with equal tech packages. After that it is just preferred stying.
