I was searching for the specs for 7.3L turbo axial play and came across this video. Not a Crummins, but the concept is the same. It confirmed my thoughts that, unlike what the old lady says, if you can feel the ol' in and out, it's bad.
    Thanks bud.

Thanks Rob I give the turbo charger a check on the Dodge every now and then and it got some play but I never seen any impact or marks . At some point I might have to change it out . I be interested in your advice on a good replacement for around 350 hp and towing . thanks again

What's in it currently....if it's a h1c I'd jump up to a hx35 as a cheap upgrade. If its hx35 a hx40 is a good step up. But you gotta look across the board at everything else before dumping a few grand on a good high end turbo. You can make 350hp on a stock turbo with just a little bit in engine mods.

Rob, no axial play and very little radial play. Almost 200k miles on the rig. How much more life can I expect. or maybe an better question is what's the average lifespan on a 5.9 Cummins turbo?

What causes the play at first place?
Any advice on how to avoid it

Make sure it has good oil, let it cool down and down over speed

Check out my turbo at 270k miles. From what i’m pickup up, it’s still good.

Hard to tell in the video. But if the whee can touch the housing or be really close it would be no good in my eyes
