And then you have to consider the branching effects outside of that. Americans everywhere are suffering because of this nonsense, and some dont even know it.
Kag001 And does it count contractors like me. I was doing electrical and plumbing work on the courthouse downtown when the shutdown started. Sure, we have other jobs currently, but the courthouse renovation was a large chunk of our profits and we don’t have enough work for everyone at the firm.

Actually, even just the threat of a shutdown is disruptive. I'm a contractor (not a fed), and one week before any potential shutdown, we have to go through a full list of prep activities. So much time gets wasted and productivity lost, even if there isn't a shutdown or it only lasts a day or two (like the last two). This is a total disaster, though. I honestly have no idea, financially or work-wise, what to expect next.
What is the thinking behind all of this mess
One must look tough and seem to be working hard to fulfill campaign promises in order to be re-elected. One must do this regardless of if one thinks one will get the funding for the wall or not.
It doesn't exist. No one thinks in this administration.

Dig under it and get in because there’s a concrete base surrounding the bottom. Can you do that very far on a wall in the middle of nowhere? No. A house has a roof. Does the border wall? No. So you can go over it. When I was a teen, some of my friends and I scaled a tall wall around a water tower that had barbed wire around the top of it. Somehow some not mechanically inclined teen girls managed it just to see if we could. You think some Mexicans with more to lose won’t manage it??? Guess again. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And they will find a way. You want to stop illegal immigration? Go after the corporations that hire them knowingly. Why won’t rich people in government do that, which makes more sense? Because they freakin’ hire them themselves. Trump couldn’t find an AMERICAN maid or construction workers??? Yeah sure, right. He doesn’t want to punish himself and his rich friends that benefit from having cheap labor that puts more money in their own pockets.

If the shutdown doesn't end in the coming weeks, then a very expensive cascade effect will start to roll through our economy. It could take years or longer to recover. For instance, the U.S. government has agreements in some other countries where it operates to not furlough employees-they can only dismiss them with generous payouts and, I understand in some cases, full pensions. This is becoming not just a mess, but a very expensive mess.

Good comment. That's their defense mechanism: to protect their "inside" (which they love) and keep out what they hate. But as Trump is also a narcissist, he projects that wish onto everyone around him and he feels threatened by people unlike him or outside his inner circle (which is shrinking). He's very eager to build that wall because for him it would be a wish-fulfillment. When a person is speaking people like him aren't listening - they are substituting what is being said to them with their own fantasy of what's being said (this can take many forms). Trump should definitely see a psychoanalyst.

I mean the wall aside, which would basically cost us the entire economy Spain to build, not paying 800,000+ workers for an extended period of time will have a MONSTOROUS effect on the economy.
On a basic level, because many of those 800,000+ people will be unable to buy things (due to their slashed incomes) that’ll tank the consumer good’s industry, not to mention all other product-based industries. And as shown by basic economics, if people are unable to buy things, that’s mean there are also people who are unable to sell things.
And if they’re people unable to sell things, then those same people are unable to buys too
And repeat.
If you continues on too long we could have something surpassing the 2008 Recession or even, combined with the funds needed to build, maintain and secure the border wall, we could be looking at something comparable in nature to the Great Depression.
Which obviously, would be pretty damn bad.

This awful for government workers. They don't get paid and when they get paid they are put into a higher tax bracket, because it's a lump sum. They also aren't eligible for emergency assistance like food stamps because they have a job. So many if them are required to show up to work in order to get the back pay but literally can't even pay their bills or feed their families because of this ridiculous BS. I'm so sad for these people.

Insult or belittle God, a prophet or a group of religious people and that's acceptable, the "freedom of speech" and "comedians shouldn't be censured" narrative, but insult or belittle something like the LBGTQ community for example, and there's an uproar. Well done, you've just destroyed your career... I'm not saying the latter is fine, it's obviously not, I am merely pointing out the hypocrisy and I don't really understand it yet.

From a non-partisan standpoint, how are these people not getting paid? I mean, I understand not opening bureaus etc., but these are your employees, you can't just say "nope, not paying you". Are government employees paid by the hour there instead of a fixed monthly income? The US is such a weird place, I wouldn't want to work there.
Can it be that the expenses are higher than the profits?
