- Aryton Senna’s death shook the world in 1994 and now 30 years later we are still remembering one of the greatest F1 drivers the world has ever seen. Also remembered is Roland Ratzenberger who died during the same weekend, the day prior to Ayrton's death. The 2024 Imola GP marks the 30th anniversary of Aryton Senna's and Roland Ratzenberger’s passing in Imola and the scenes were quite emotional and even past F1 legends like Sebastian Vettel were at the track for a special Ayrton Senna/Roland Ratzenberger tribute. If you know much about this circuit, you will also know that there is an Aryton Senna memorial - this Aryton Senna statue is something I along with many other F1 personnel take the time to visit every year to get a sense of how much the Brazilian F1 driver meant to the world. Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger will long be remembered.

Agree. Just correction, my understanding is that although the broken steering column caused the accident, it was one of the suspension arms which pierced his helmet that caused his death. But I stand to be corrected if that’s not accurate.
@@axelknutt5065That is accurate. The suspension arm was one of a number of head injuries. The wheel being another. Interestingly Alboreto had a very similar impact at the same corner in 91 and walked away.

Senna is hands down the GOAT. I met him in Adelaide after the 92 AGP - had a quick chat for about a minute - walking down the access lane behind the pits - he was leaving the venue - as he got in his shuttle vehicle he gave me his Marlboro McLaren umbrella - he said "Here this is for you". Still got it on my wall. I was a 19 year old kart racer aspiring to F1 at the time (sounds old for karting these days, but back then it was normal - Senna himself raced karts until 20/21) - for almost all of us in that camp at the time Senna was the absolute GOD - to meet him that day was surreal. 18 months later i was watching the 94 San Marino GP with my Dad as usual - we watched every race together for the best part of a decade - the camera was on-board with Schumacher through Tamburello and i would always go into race mode when the in-car cameras were shown (still quite a treat in those days) - so i noticed immediately when Senna speared straight on - even before he hit the wall i shouted "Senna off" and i immediately realized it was the superfast Tamburello Curve and was concerned, but hoped to quickly see him get out of the car. When he didn't we hoped he was just knocked out. Then it became clear the situation was at least serious or worse, and then some reporter's voice said the words i will never forget; "Ayrton Senna has grave head injuries." I probably knew then what the result would be but couldn't believe it - watched the rest of the race hoping for good news - can't remember any of it - was just this numb feeling. Even 30 years later it's hard to believe. I continued racing, even eventually did a F1 track day - but never got a pro gig - way it goes for most of us in this sport. Kept watching F1 but to be honest it was never the same again - the magic was gone, it was the day the music died. It was a privilege to be around in the Senna era - i wouldn't trade it for anything, not even to be young again - he was the highlight of motorsport history - an absolute GIANT! RIP Champ!

I truly appreciate you mentioning Roland Ratzenberger, he's often just forgotten or overlooked.
Although he didn't become champion, he was a great driver in his own right and these legends shouldn't ever be forgotten.
Senna led a meeting to cancel the race after Ratzenberger accident. He was overvoted by money.

The saddest part is that Senna had an Austrian flag in his cockpit he planned to wave as he crossed the line as a tribute to Ratzenberger.

One thing I'll never forget is when Dale Earnhardt Sr won the NASCAR Cup race later that day his first words in victory lane were condolences to the Sena family and you could see he was visibly a little shaken at the realization that being a "superman" doesn't mean you're immortal.
And to think he suffered the same fate. Two Motorsport greats gone too soon.

Senna raced for 10 years in f1 buddy... check how many of these years he finished in the top 5, top 3 without having the best car, he won monaco 5 times in a row and it would be 7 if he hadn't crashed in 88, those +60 poles he achieved in just decade of f1 with less races and so many other things.

I consider myself very lucky that I'm old enough to have seen Aryton Senna race live and in person at the Detroit Grand Prix in 1984. (Detroit, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸)
I saw his last win (Adelaide 1993), his last home race (Interlagos 1994) and I was at Imola for that bad weekend.
At Adelaide they used to have a concert after the race. Some people would buy a general admission ticket and go straight to the stage and not bother with the race. In 1993 Tina Turner was the main attraction and Senna was on stage when he sang 'Simply the Best'. It was a long day but worth it.
I knew Seb was a Schumy fanatic, but never heard from him about Senna. 🤔

Schumacher was also a Senna fan so...
Senna is Seb's favorite driver too. He often shares about how he heard about Senna from his dad and people around him, how Senna is not only an amazing driver but also an amazing human too, and makes him like Senna even more...🤍
Still makes me cry even 30 years later. God Speed Ayrton, We still miss you.

It sounds cruel, but I love to think Heaven cheered. Tambourines (Tamburello) are used in the Bible when warriors come home from battle.
I was 33 years old, and watched the events of the 1994 Imola GP live on TV. Thanks so much Kim for showing the memorial and park - I’ve always wanted to visit it!

That was a dark weekend in motorsport. It seemed that everything that could go wrong did. Barichello's crash, the death of Roland Ratzenberger, the crash between Lamy and Lehto at the start of the race, and of course, the death of Ayrton Senna. Senna Sempre
I remember all too clearly that weekend, that moment when, for only the second time, Murray Walker was speechless. What is often forgotten, is Barichello had a horror that weekend too.

I’m happy to see the whole Motorsport community come together to pay tribute to Senna. However, I couldn’t help think about Schumacher. He’s still here, and alive, but in reality, he’s basically left us for over a decade. We do not remember him on the anniversary of his accident nor do we set up a memorial for him. We can only hope that he pulls thru, no matter how little of chance it may be

My heart sank that day as I witnessed the accident live along with many others. Senna was distraught having witnessed what happened to Roland prior. 1 of my idols was gone despite what the media coverage said prior to arriving at the hospital.. 😢
I have yet to visit Imola. It’s on my bucket list and rest assure I will be paying tribute. It was great to see my flag just above the Brazilian one with his face on it. 👏🏻🇵🇪

I love your Italian subtitles 😂 It's about as far as I get as well, I understood a few words but that was it 😅 But it looks like a lovely memorial. I wish I would have seen Senna race back then, but I was too young still. I still want to watch a few races on F1TV, but sadly they don't have the complete seasons of those years.
Thank you very much for that video Kym, we all remember where we were on that fateful day, I was up working on the Indy car grand prix after seeing Senna win his last race at the 1993 Adelaide GP in the under powered McLaren ford, such was his pure skill. I stayed up on Sunday night to watch the race and woke up the next day to the terrible news. Senna inspired a generation of racing drivers and will never be forgotten. Thanks for paying tribute to Roland Ratzenberger who also sacrificed his life following his passion. Cheers

Imola was one of my favourite race tracks. I used to stay in Bologna and catch the train. The Imola train station is on one side of the town and the track the other side. Even in the early hours on Sunday there were many stores open so you could buy some more water and something to eat at the track.
I was,there in 1994. On the Saturday morning we sat at Tosa but moved onto Variante Alta for the afternoon. On Sunday I sat on the hill at Rivazza with some Italian friends.
Touching! I’m going to Imola next year for the race and will be sure to check out the memorials. RIP Ratzenberger and Senna.
I've always had Imola on my bucket list and I can't imagine leaving that memorial dry eyed. Senna was an amazing person on and off track and both him and Roland were headed towards greater things before they were taken from motorsport and the world. They're always in my memory when f1 visits europe and Italy specifically.

The kid talking about Senna and the hotel room wasn't even born the year he died.. lol. I feel old. I watched that horrible race on TV and attended the Canadian GP same year. In that race they awkwardly added temporary chicanes on the back straight to slow the cars down.. The whole sport was in shock for months.

What a weekend that was. Let's not forget Rubens Barichello who crashed on the Friday and had to be resuscitated due to his tongue blocking his airway.

I was devastated the day he died. I named my son after him. I'm glad to see he is still very loved and missed. Man, what could've been if he'd have been here longer. Lastly, I just ordered one of the shirts that the drivers were wearing.

The greatest qualifier of all-time…wet or dry, the greatest Formula 1 driver of all-time - Ayrton Senna. Senna had abilities, race craft and control over mind and machinery that was beyond the level of his contemporaries- Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Schumacher, Berger and Patrese. His intense powers of concentration is legendary. The fact at his last race he had focused some attention on Roland Ratzenberger and wanted to give the Austrian a tribute by carrying the Austrian flag in his car when he was, unfortunately, killed shows the mettle of the man. He deeply cared for the sport and its participants and conscience about improving safety standards. Fast, consistent, intelligent, sensitive and charismatic - there will never be a Formula 1 driver like Ayrton Senna.
It just give me goosebumps. Senna was my hero!
So many thanks to people like Sir Jackie Stewart who helped make racing safer. No deaths of an F1 driver in a Gran Prix race.

I was 17/18 when Senna died and my family always watched the grand prix together. I remember seeing the accident and the commentators saying he was ok because he was moving in the car, so didn't think much of it until later on when it was confirmed he'd died. He was always so passionate about driver safety and his death actually does seem to have had an affect on the development of the halo and the other aafety features to help protect the drivers as much as possible in what is an inherently dangerous sport. RIP Aryton. RIP Roland.

You mentioned both Senna and Ratzenberger that weekend. However Ruben also had a horrific accident, and it was a miracle he wasn’t killed. A dark, dark time, that many of us will never forget.
It should also be remembered that Piquet and Berger also had bad crashes at the same spot as Senna years before. Yet they did nothing to make it safer. The neglect there certainly led to Senna’s death. In fact the Berger crash is so similar to Senna’s. Then just a couple years before Alberto and Patrese had crashes at that same corner.

There is a video on CZcams showing the extraction of Roland from the remains of his Simtek and you can tell that at that moment he had passed away. If the FIA had admitted this fact they were set to lose millions as the event would have had to have been cancelled and knowing this they decided to fly Roland’s body to a hospital and pronounce his death there. Obviously we all know what happened the following day,we lost one of the biggest names in motorsport history. It just amazes me that money was more important than the safety of those competing in the race. We lost a driver who had finally achieved his dream of racing in F1 and through pure greed we also lost an absolute legend.

Technically, 3 racecar drivers died on that weekend. Barrichello swalled his tong on his crash, and he says that he died for 6 min, when then he was ressussitaded by medical staff by the track, He has no recollection of the weekend and he says that the next memory that he has is him carrying Senna's coffin days latter.
