The snap crackle pop is in the Quincy jones sample Summer in the city.
It would simply be that way because the actual vinyl record J Swift owned was old, probably an original pressing from 1973.
Notice fatlips verse, the sample is filtered (all the high pitch frequency is compressed into the low so you don't hear the crackling, then halfway through its unfiltered and you hear the organ and the crackling again.
One of my favourite songs of any genre.

Some vinyl was dirty due to wear and tear and age of the records. It became a part of the sound. Stack enough samples and the snap and crackling will get loud. It really comes to light during mastering when they add compression and other processes to bring up the levels to industry standard.

Yeah "Otha Fish" is incredible. I feel like no one can bounce like the South and the East has traditionally always had the purest lyricists but when it comes to flow, THAT crown goes to the west. The snap crackle and pop is called “popcorn” it’s inherently in vinyl, especially with records that have been used. Some producers would enhance popcorn sounds with samples to make the songs grittier. Also, early EQing couldn’t remove popcorn sounds in all cases.

The crackling wasn't left in or applied. In the beginnings of hip-hop, we worked with what we had and had absolutely no way to take it out. People that didn't have the equipment to make their own beats, used a lot of samples. The crackling is incidental and sounded good. It was just there. It's like watching a movie and seeing insects in the background. You don't add them in or take them out. They're just there and it works. It's part of nature. It was later that people started to choose to add it in or take it out, and this was only after equipment had the ability to do so and people either wanted a clean sound, or a nostalgic authentic old sound. In the beginning, it wasn't a choice. I know... I was there.

Takes me back to 8th grade and playing this on the blacktop while shooting ball (had it on cassingle lol). If I remember correctly it dropped toward the end of the school year because I remember hearing it being played everywhere that summer. Love it as much now as I did the first time I heard it! Really really good (and fun) album.

Very insightful comment regarding the velocity of tech advances during the 90's. It would be very interesting to see an in-depth look at how tech influenced musical evolution throughout the 90's and early 00's

22:09 - 22:19 Wow, thank you for mentioning the Elvis Presley references there. Those went over my head for decades now. Finally someone takes the time to appreciate the Pharcyde song that documented use of modern day words / terminology: "Simp" & "Low-Key" in a disarming way.

The static is something that you get from vinyl samples. I think they enhanced on the beat. Another grouo that applied that sound was The Roots in their song distortion of static. The irony was they were/are a hip hop band that makes it a point to use live instruments.

In 1992 the vinyl fuzz was not an applied effect later on. Yes, but in 92 it was from digging for records in the craziest collections in the dirtiest most rundown thrift shops you've ever seen.

Summer in the City" by Quincy Jones, "125th Street Congress" by Weather Report, and "Are You Experienced?" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
These are 3 of the songs sampled for this song.
Thank you both I enjoy watching your vids. My mom and I stay talking about music all the time. I am 52 years old and not only do I know where and what the samples are because the sampled songs are from my childhood but as a young adult at the time when this song and album came out it takes me right back to a place and chokes me up still.
Peace from the south side of Chicago.
