I just came to a realization...
Most of the major rivalry between Britain and France started after William The Conqueror conquered England. William The Conqueror was Norman (which is pretty culturally close to French). France has really just been fighting its long lost brother for all these centuries. France can never not fight itself.
They fought so hard it made the US
The only reason it started was because William I was still a vassal of the french king when he became the king of england, which made everyone involved mad. The hundred years war was basically a civil war to see who should rule france. It's after they were kicked out of mainland france that they became their own thing. The rivalry remained because at that point why not. The english also switched to protestantism a bit later while France stayed catholic so they had a justification to continue their fight
