No it’s not. He just did a case last week of another a guy who walked into an apartment and stabbed another dude 22 times. There are plenty of cases of strangers stabbing people they don’t know 40+ times

Exactly. More comment on this and other personality traits would have been great instead of focusing on the high murder rate. This murder was undoubtedly different.
Shortly after completing my BA I was nearly murdered by a former boyfriend turned attacker/stalker who lived in the building. With God's help I was able to fight back and run away. As I pulled out of the driveway his hands scraped the back of my car as I drove to safety. I had recently taken a self defense course at Cal State Northridge which gave me the confidence I needed. My heart breaks for Inga; I can relate to how terrified she must have felt.
I attended Cal State Northridge Fall 1999 to Spring 2001. I lived in the dorms and it was pretty safe back then. I'm sorry your ex was controlling and disregarded your boundaries. I would've reversed my car backwards slowly if I were you. 😁

After a day of teaching, I relax while listening to your voice. The case of Inge Lotz has always intruiged me. The incompetence of the police is shocking! And our justice system is broken and corrupt. That is one of the reasons that living in South Africa is like an episode of Survivor (but without the cheats and help!)

My friend’s brother and his girlfriend were living in Johannesburg. They were at home and a bunch of random men entered and they realised they were being robbed. They hid in a wardrobe, the men found them and shot them both to death at point blank range. Tragic and terrifying. Such a waste.

Our police force in South Africa is a JOKE! I cannot believe that we had such a fantastic police service, and in less that 30 years that all changed! There are still cops who care and will investigate a case, but in general they just don't care at all! They are only good at asking for, and taking bribes.
They changed the locks to the door, she still had a security gate, the locks of which cannot be and were not changed.

Inge was murdered in the same apartment complex that I lived in. People commenting here about experiences in Johannesburg.....this area which is near Cape Town is nowhere near as unsafe. Especially at the time that the crime occurred. I have lived in both JHB and CT. The complex was incredibly secure
I guess if you hear murder rates and South Africa Johannesburg is bound to come up. You lived in that complex. What was it like?
@@alsie1882 I lived in the complex directly next to Inge's for 3 years and currently live down the road from the complex. It is a secure and safe area. I always left my door open at night (with my security gate locked) for my cats to come in and out (even when i'd go away on weekends) and I never felt unsafe for a second. It is a highly student populated area that I promise you no one I have ever spoken to that lives there has ever felt in danger in. Definitely not more unsafe than your typical student accommodation areas.
Thank you so much for pointing this out. Everyone in the comments just hears the murder rates and assumes that something will happen to them when they come here when they have done absolutely no research on the type of crimes/location of the crimes. How many of these murders are tourists? Not even a fraction of the percentage.
I'd personally would not feel much safer in a country like the US.

The guy who killed her was already in her apartment when she came home, she just started the movie when she was attacked, it wasn't anyone who lived in the apartment complex, they wouldn't have needed the remote, or had their own, three suspects, the guy who changes locks, he could have had a key, her BF, could have gotten the second set, and a worker doing the tile. She was looking at the magazine waiting for her movie to start that she probably bought when she was at the store, who ever it was had time to lay in wait. Not knowing what time she would be coming home, they had to wait, did her BF have that time? don't sound like he did. I say the guy who changes locks on doors who I would be looking at, funny how she died the next day after the lock was changed.

I think the motive was 100% sexual, very pretty girl maybe so much so that the attacker was unable to perpetrate a rape hence the massive over kill in stabbing injuries.

I worked at the same company as Fred van der Vyver at the time. Sadly the police bungled this investigation epically, so it's likely that the murderer will never be brought to justice. I live in Cape Town, and it doesn't feel like a warzone. Most murders that occur are gang related and confined to the less privileged areas where daily life is a struggle for survival. Thanks for all your hard work, Dr Grande.

Most crimes start from poverty, and it's not just about evil people trying to murder everyone. That's why the countries with more wealth will always have lower murder rates.
From a couple people I know from South Africa I've heard that the high home security the rich have serves more as a deterrent against crime than to genuinely stop anyone in the act. That's the impression I got from people from Cape Town and Stellenbosch when I brought up the infamous images of upper class neighborhoods full of barbed wire.
I've been to Cape Town and fell in love. I fell in love with South Africa as a whole. It did not feel like a war zone to me either. I was careful, but I take same precautions here in London and when I lived in NYC.

We were taken on a drive through a upper middle class neighborhood in Johannesburg about 30 years ago, and every house was surrounded by high walls topped with curled barbed or razor wire -- just like you would see around a prison.

As a Salvadorean, it really hurts to hear these murder rates! I was constantly in fear and watching my back as a kid while traveling to and from school, but I didn't know I was living in the worst country in the world. Damn this hits differently now.
Hopefully, now with Bukele as President things will get better. Everybody seems to admire him and appreciate everything he's doing for the country.

Thank you for covering this case. I live in South Africa and the high levels of crime are very real. Where I stay, we have an electric fence, multiple alarm systems and security cameras and we still have problems with crime. One of our neighbors were shot a few years ago and armed robberies are commonplace. We have a beautiful country, but we have a lot of crime, corruption, poverty and high levels of unemployment. Many people want to leave, but are unable to afford it.
OMG!!! I was planning a trip there this year or early next year. After seeing this video and reading the comments I am strongly reconsidering.
@@user-eu3qy8uf7f You need to establish the safe areas in the places that you are visiting. Don't display any valueable items in public and keep your purse and/or wallet close. Always keep your car and home doors locked and do not leave valuable items unattended. I also suggest not picking fights with any of the citizens in South Africa. Most people are very friendly, but don't wrong anyone and do not let anyone convince you to do something you don't want to do. It is a beautiful country and it's very cheap for people from other countries to visit. Get yourself a good hotel room or a fancy room in a lodge. Check the reviews and enquire about their security measures. Follow these tips and you should be fine. You just need to be aware of the dangers and act smart. Leaving your car door unlocked would almost certainly lead to your car being stolen, hijacked or burgled.

I find none of the evidence against the boyfriend compelling except for his insistence to let it be known that he was trying to reach her after she was deceased, something a guilty party often does. It has even greater weight when revealed that he often couldn't reach her but never before made an issue of it.
I think he spent the night at her place to time and gauge everything. Neighbors. deliveries. construction. opening / closing of security gate. location of cameras etc.
I don't think we know what the real evidence was. How many gash wounds? Where were the wounds? etc. What exactly was electronically time stamped at work? Anybody with IT knowledge can skirt surface problems and change timestamps. Ask how I know.......heheheheh
It seems sus to get someone else to go for him.
Despite the limited window of opportunity from the electronic devices, I think Fred was the killer, but the police did such a terrible job with the investigation, they left huge room for reasonable doubt. They effectively aided Inge's murderer in getting off scot-free through their incompetence.
Still, every aspect of the murder itself--no forced entry, the clothes she was wearing, the lack of any sexual assault, the excessive violence of the attack--points to Fred, not to someone who was looking to rob and/or sexually assault the pretty blond they first saw that morning. Additionally, his behavior as described in the relationship would fall well in line with a jealous boyfriend who would react violently to the prospect of the relationship ending.
Even the "exculpatory" timeframe from the electronic devices could be a red herring: sometimes when logging off from a computer, the computer might show you as still logged in until it times out on its own. In such a case, it may have given him just enough extra time to kill her, clean up a little, then go back to work. Not to mention, that even as-is, the timeframe only made it difficult--but not impossible--to commit the crime, which included just leaving her right where she was killed.
I completely agree. Physically she was far more attractive than him, and he must have known that. The lack of sex makes me think that deep down she did not really want him, and she knew she would inevitably leave him. She must have been giving signs that she wanted to end the relationship, and he probably just couldn't stand that. Classic "if I can't have you nobody will".

Good points. I do think I've heard white people are targeted for murder there. Esp farmers, but I think in general as well. But that aside... he sounds pretty guilty to me too. He likely didn't like what she wrote in the note... I bet after the big fight he was wanting to gauge where she was at, and didn't like it... or, I wonder if he was planning on trying to fake a suicide note somehow using some of what she wrote. I mean... who sees someone bludgeoned/ beaten/ stabbed to death & thinks they did it to themselves? Well, I assume that would get a little 'messy' & not look like an OD or w/ever. Big 🚩imo. I also always find it sus when the guy 'has to go check on her' when it really hasn't been long enough to panic yet. In my experience, esp after a fight... they're happy to have the extra time. I really think he asked her to write stuff down in hopes of using it to prove a suicide. Not a typical request from a guy... but not impossible either. He probably forgot the note in his rush to get there, lol. It's not funny... but trying to figure out what these people were thinking... you gotta laugh sometimes.

I'm from Ireland and I was in work a few weeks ago unloading a trailer,the driver was from South Africa/Cape town and the stories he told me about where he lives were absolutely awful,couldn't imagine trying to grow up their,I live in Dublin and its rough enough but Cape Town sounds like hell on earth

Cape Town is actually lovely. I‘m not South African but lived there for almost 10 years. I attended the University of Cape Town and have great memories of my student life there. Granted it was a while ago but even then South Africa was already „notorious“ for its violent crimes. We all had to be careful, of course, but, believe it or not, you get used to it.
Cape Town is definitely not hell on earth. It is a lovely place. Like every big city it has crime but it doesn’t just affect everyone. I have lived year for 58 years and haven’t been the victim of a crime.

I was struck by the detail that she was still holding the remote when her body was discovered.
This makes me think she was passed out prior to the killing. I’m sure a toxicology test was done. What were the results? Did they find a date rape drug in her? This is something they’d possibly keep quiet.
I was also confused about that detail bc Dr. G said she had many defensive wounds. Then I thought maybe she tried using it as a sort of weapon while fighting back.
@@Illtakeamoodringtogoplease No, I honestly wish you were correct as that would mean she suffered much less. But thats not the case. She had extensive defensive wounds on her showing she valiantly fought back as hard as she could. Investigators believe she was holding the remote when the attacker pounced and, in the sudden moment, she tried to use what was in her hands (the remote) as a defensive weapon. That's why it was still there when she was found.

If you are looking for a motive, the BF is the only one with a motive. However, it could also be a random murder or a murderer who has not yet been caught. Nothing was stolen, which suggests that the goal was to kill her.
It’s possible Inge was cheating, as Fred suspected and that person would have a motive as well. It’s also worth pointing out that Fred had motive, but not opportunity.
Yep and she was not raped, so it’s unlikely that it was one of the workers that return after getting fixated on her (we are talking a psychopath ) but it could be that it was not the boyfriend but some kind of serial killer. We don’t know because of the bad police work. Sad, if the boyfriend is innocent his life is also ruined as people will continue to believe he was. And then is no closure and to justice for the family
Random murders typically don’t involve 47 stab wounds. That would indicate a crime of passion.

Please examine the case of my friend, Lisa Bishop, who disappeared when she joined a young man with a boat setting sail for the Caribbean from Florida. Her case was featured years ago, on Unsolved Mysteries.
@Melissa James thank you. I met her and her boyfriend in Atlanta, GA. My boyfriend at the time was a good friend of Paul. We lived in NYC. We spent a course of days in GA and Lisa was different from the people I met as acquaintances and friends. I was also in my early 20's. Lisa was mature and warm, inviting, and the drama free type of person. Pursuing her career. During a time where
youn g adults were kind of narcissistic and direction less(myself included in certain aspects), she stood out, to me. Also, I was familiar with people in New York, didn't meet many people who were down to earth. Anyway , when my boyfriend would return from Atlanta ftom his business trips, he would make a point to telle, "oh, Lisa told me to tell you "hi" hope your doing well. Hope to see you the next time you're in Atlanta, etc". Just very nice. And I know she would take the time to ask him how I was doing,etc.
We talked just a couple of times by phone, and I was just happy to have incidentally, met a very nice, kind, friend. About 9 months after I had first met Lisa, her boyfriend Paul was visiting New York and had stopped by my boyfriend's house. I was happy to see him and asked him how Lisa is doing. At this point, he told me, she was missing, from a boat trip. She had a journalism degree and was working on a documentary. I was completely shocked, not only about that she was missing, but that my boyfriend hadn't thought to mention it, to me?? My boyfriend did regularly smoke pot and it was definitely not a relationship based on either of us having good communication skills, but still, I was just, shocked and saddened to hear this news. Within the next year I moved back to Florida, I never heard anything again about her. And once in a while I would inquire with my ex bf, who also, hadn't heard anything more about her being found or her case being solved. A few years ago, I happened to watch an der episode of unsolved Mysteries, where they featured her story, and it was even more devastating ,learning the facts surrounding her disappearance. I think it was her inexperience with shady people, that made her too trusting of this young man she met. Because she wasn't the average young, impulsive woman looking for excitement and adventure. She trusted, that most people are civilized and good natured.i think because she came from a kind, good family and had good relationships with the people she met. It's just beyond sad 😢
I don't watch unsolved mysterious anymore because it drives me crazy not knowing what happened to them
There is hardly any person in South Africa who has not been affected by violent crime, and we have virtually no protection from government. Apart from incompetent police officers, systems needed for the solving of crimes have collapsed, eg DNA testing (backlog of >210,000 cases). In addition to murder, we also have to contend with high levels of robbery, theft and home invasions. Constant vigilance is required, whether at home or out and about. Still, I do not wish to live in anywhere else than in my beautiful country.

I have lived in Cape Town and JHB my entire life. I have been mugged twice and a mate and I were once kidnapped at gunpoint for several hours in an area in JHB. This horrifies my international friends, but many of my peers here have similar stories.

@@hambam7533 I really try to encourage people to come visit. There are amazing places to see. Violent crimes mostly occur in townships and informal settlements, but you would be foolhardy to let your guard down in even the nicest areas in town.

I live in Cape Town and the slant given on violence is a bit misleading. Yes, there is extreme violence here, apparently 70 murders per day in the country. However, the violence is mainly localized to areas where lethal gangs operate. I'd never go anywhere near those areas, anymore than I would go to a similar area in other countries. That doesn't mean you won't be the victim of theft if you're walking around with expensive jewelry and cameras. You'll be an easy target. South Africa is an awesome county to visit. The beauty is breathtaking and the people, warm and friendly. My guess is that one of the workers hid in the apartment, or managed to figure out how to get back in. The person who changed the lock would be highly suspect. She was taken by total surprise on her couch. The investigation was extremely shoddy and botched. Police here are understaffed and under trained. This could have happened anywhere in the world, and it does. Sadly.

The remote was not in Inge's hand. There were two remotes - one for the TV and one for the DVD player. One of the remotes got wedges between Inge's body and the back of the couch. The other remote was in the vicinity of the foot-end of the couch.
Having parents and family who lived and some who still live in SA, its so sad to see how much worse it has become.
This is a complex case. Fred does seem like the likely suspect since she wanted to break up with him and she had bruises on her arms, but it could have been one of the construction workers. Anything is possible. It's too bad the authorities did such a shoddy job regarding their investigation. It's sad.

@@frankG335 Usually "overkill" is a crime of passion which would point to the boyfriend but there are so many factors in this. The 15 minute window of opportunity for one. Could the boyfriend have been right? Could she have been seeing someone else? Maybe she let the other guy in to watch the movie with her and things turned bad. Maybe he's the one who put the bruises on her arm, and maybe she changed the locks to keep her main BF locked out so he wouldn't walk in on them. Life can be stranger than fiction. Who knows what the real truth is? If the police had done their job properly there would have been an arrest by now, but more than likely this case will go unsolved. It's a travesty to think that the perpetrator is on the loose ready to kill again.

I wish people could stop using the analogy of "over kill" to give the credence that it could only be done by an intimate partner or someone close to the victim. It's not always the case and unfortunately it's this mentality that lead to this case been unsolved. A total stranger can very well use extreme violence too,a psychotic drug user or a vengeful killer that sees their victim as the representation and manifestation of their rage and anger.
The police were totally inept..didnt even interview the construction workers..also seems odd that such a security conscious place didnt have CCTV...I hate unsolved cases..the very thought that the perpetrator is still free I find unacceptable

Bad police work is a theme in these unsolved cases. Although it may have been the bf, they should have also investigated the contractors. I believe police should investigated all of the possibilities and then rule things out based on facts (not their opinions about who has done it). How could they not have looked into the contractors and how could they have "returned the dvd"??? Poor Inga she is an absolutely beautiful and talented young woman who deserved much better. I hope that this case can still be solved one day! I think it could have been a contractor just lying in wait that surprised her. Rare compared to being attacked by a person that the victim knows but still possible.

I agree that it was her boyfriend. I wonder if all the timeframes were accurate. Who else would have the slightest motive? Yeah, I know, the murder rate is astounding, so probably a lot of killings with no obvious motives. But, seems this one would have some kind of motive. Nothing of value taken; no sign of attempted sexual assault. Incredibly senseless if was not a jilted lover.

Personally, I've been to South Africa several times- I even lived there for a few months when I was 22. I've been to quite a few different areas of it, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Gansbaai (where I lived), and Phalaborwa. Despite nearly always traveling by myself, as a 20-something year old American woman, I can honestly say I can't recall any occasion where I've felt unsafe in South Africa. Sure, there are areas to avoid and stupid things you shouldn't do, and I know this is just my anecdotal experience, but I always find it a little sad how many people are put off from traveling there because of horror stories like this. Of course you have to use common sense (as you should when traveling anywhere), but simply doing that was always enough to keep me safe in that beautiful country.
I was there in earlier years and at all but one of those places you mentioned. The 70's were safer but the politics were unfair. It was one of the most beautiful countries, flowers everywhere, beautiful Jacuenda trees blooming in Pretoria, clean air, great weather, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, lovely. I also went to Zambia, then southern Rhodesia until 1980. all beautiful. Victoria Falls was spectacular but we were escorted there from the airport under armed guard on both sides of our bus, later learned 2 girls had been murdered in Victoria Falls, tourists, I believe. It's a beautiful and unique country / countries, it would be sad if people cantexperience it due to danger.

Yes, I agree. Most contractors would only call by at a pre-arranged time… and being turned away could have made him irritated… I don’t know the full story but I do wonder about the contractor. Poor Inge.
I’m an on location technician, and I kinda savor being turned away from a job. That means less work for the day. I get the feeling that tile guys were responsible as well, but I doubt that being turned away was a motive. Maybe they just got a glimpse at an opportunity to catch Inge alone.
@@levi1929 yes, I know what you mean. I don’t know about you… but sometimes it’s not WHAT people say but HOW they say it that makes all the difference. Maybe she was dismissive or a bit curt to the contractor because she was focused on getting the letter to Frank. To the contractor her attitude may have come across as “the final straw” to someone who maybe had been harbouring a bit of a crush on her. I think it could have been someone who had some kind of premeditated inclination to kill Inge, possibly because they felt rejected… I’m no expert… but it doesn’t seem to have been burglary and the stabbing itself seemed frenzied, as if taking out frustration or anger. I’m not totally sure of the boyfriend’s innocence either. It’s just an awful thing to have happened and no justice for Inge’s family. Perhaps one day someone, who knows something, may confess.
Perhaps one of the contractors stayed behind or came when power was cut. They wanted to rob her but apparently after killing her did not find anything. As she was completely taken aback, she sat in the same pose of reading a magazine. But 47 times!

It has been scientifically proven over and over that the fingerprint was not taken from a curved surface. Nothing of the fingerprint lift is inconsistent with being from a DVD holder.

Emotionally abusive partners will literally go off the rails if they can't reach/contact the other person the minute they want to. The abuser will escalate very quickly.
That is why you don’t put up with it and leave. At least Women can goto a Shelter anytime they want. Males have no such option. There’s no such thing as a Male Domestic Violence Shelter where I live. I know more Male victims of DV, than I do Females. I am one as well, at least Verbal/psychological Abuse. My Cousin’s Native Wife also beat him while he was dying from Cancer and was too weak to do anything.

Police botched the investigation, I believe there's a general view that the accused was indeed guilty. Accused has a rich family so hired a top notch defense attorney who could easily create doubt in light of police's incompetence.

The chance of getting murdered is as low as winning lottery. All you need is some common sense, paying attention to your surroundings and listening to your guts feeling.
If you do a search on highest percentage of murders in the US you will see that there are quite a few cities that also have a high murder rate. Check out St Louis Missouri. I wish I knew about the high murder rate while visiting Jamaica and the Bahamas several times and walking around by myself.

I live in South Africa and my dad was hijacked. We never recovered the vehicle. My uncle was burgled in his home, tied up and gagged. An attempted robbery also happened at our home, we still have the bullets in the wall. Thank goodness we got the door closed in time as my dad ran inside. My husband was mugged. My childhood friend was raped a month before her wedding at gun point during a home invasion while her mother was in the next room. We simply don’t realise how ‘not normal’ it is, until people compare it to other places.

The police matched a fingerprint they found on a DVD holder to Inge’s boyfriend Fred. As Inge rented the DVD just hours before her death it means that Fred was in her presence that afternoon. However, he claims that he was at work all day, 50 km away.
Did you not notice the part where the fingerprint lifted from the dvd case was clearly from a curved surface like a glass or cup, and therefore most likely a plant. Don't forget that these 2nd/3rd world police forces are only interested in closing cases, not finding the truth, they will make up evidence, lie and do whatever to get out of doing any extra paperwork or actual police work. In such countries, a police job is a license to steal and live above the law, nothing to do with solving crimes, sadly.
Except that fingerprint turned out to have been lifted from a cylinder. So could not have been from the DVD case. Apparently the police did a terrible job preserving the evidence.
He was at work that day. They have video footage of him getting to work and clocking in and then leaving work. Have a look at the documentary Huisgenoot: ware lewensdrama Inge Lotz

Doc, you’re humor is so far beyond funny, I can’t even hold a candle.
Amanda from South Africa here. Fred behaved very suspicious after the murder however the contractors cast doubt on the suspicion. The shady Police work didn't help either. Something else: Her Mother volunteered at a domestic violence charity and warned Inge about Fred. Her Father paid several Private Investigators but due to evidence lost due to the bad Police investigation, the private investigations turned up nothing. The place where she was killed was indeed one of the most secured in one of the safest areas.
Can you analyze the case of Miya Marcano? Her tragic ending was in part due to a lack of security at the apartment complex she lived in. I also know some people who interacted and befriended her.

The worker theory seems the most likely to me. There are males who feel a lot of acute resentment and even rage toward attractive women, particularly white women, especially attractive privileged white women (or even toward perceived-as-priveleged white women in general), to whom they are very attracted but who are unavailable to them. They might be perceived as rejecting, unaccepting, aloof, out of reach, judging, in some cases racist, or otherwise looking down on or uninterested in them.
There are many well documented cases of extreme violence that follow this pattern. The feelings do seem to be more common and stronger than most people realize.
