It’s common to rationalize that tigers kill crocs on land, and it’s the other way around in the water. But the evidence states otherwise.
In a tigers habitat, it resides at the very apex of the food pyramid, with no competition for that top spot. In Africa, sometimes lions have to tolerate hyenas, or other predators getting the food source first. It’s not like this in the tigers world. Tigers are programmed to stalk and kill anything that offers it competition for survival. There is no animal within its habitat that it needs to fear. Sure tigers sometimes get killed by certain other animals, but it’s a rarity.
The crocodiles in the tigers habitat are actually scared shitless of the tiger. If crocodiles are submerged in the shallow waters near the shore, waiting to ambush a deer, for example, and a tiger comes along, if the tiger pounces into the shallows, all the crocodiles will scurry away. A tiger can kill a crocodile on land with little risk to itself. In shallow waters, it’s no different for the tiger. But even in deep waters, it’s thought that crocodiles only attack tigers by accident, thinking they were some prey animal. And in these cases, it is often the outcome, that the tiger kills the crocodile - even if the water is too deep for the tiger to touch bottom…but why is this?
Crocodiles have their 1700 lbs per square in bite to fight with. They have a “death roll’ where they can grab hold of something and roll their bodies with it. This is how they tear flesh off carcasses. Crocodiles can snap their bodies laterally with tremendous force. It can swim well and hold its breath for considerable periods. Yet all of these things don’t present the level of danger to a tiger, especially a larger male, than people would think.
First of all, although a tigers bite is about 950 psi, that is still strong enough to crush bone. But the real super power of the big male tiger is its muscular strength. Humans have two types of muscle - slow twitch, and fast twitch. Slow is for endurance, fast is for explosive movement. Tigers have these, but they also have a third muscle type, which we call super fast twitch, and his body is absolutely loaded with it.
For example, a large male tigers static blow force (that’s swiping at an object with its paw from a still position) can measure 15,000 psi. A human being becomes unconscious around 8-900 psi. A tiger could quite literally knock the head off a human, as a batter hits the baseball off a tee.
Tigers can carry upwards of 1000 lbs just with their mouth up a tree, over a fence. One tiger from a national park, escaped its area by climbing a 12 foot fence to stalk and kill a cow from a farm. The tiger was caught on camera trap climbing the fence with the 900 lb cow, and throwing it over the top, before climbing back into its own protected area. The massive strength of a tiger is way too much for a crocodile to deal with, even in deep water, which is why crocs usually leave tigers alone in the water, unless its a case of mistaken identity.
One event, where a crocodile possibly mistakenly attacked a tiger as it swam through deep waters at night, shows that by morning a ranger, who’d heard the struggle, found the crocodile in question dead, floating on the bank. Its skull had been crushed, and there was a tiny piece of a tigers tail stuck in its teeth. And so it was that this particular tiger had tousled with the crocodile in deep waters, and killed it. Upon examination of the scene by the ranger, he found nothing but fresh tiger tracks exiting the water on the bank. There was no blood to be found by either animal, as the crocodiles battered skull was still covered with unbroken skin.
In general, unless it’s a mistake, crocodiles don’t even go for tiger cubs. This is because they understand that it is in the behaviour of a tiger to stalk and kill anything that - again - threatens its survival, and that goes for the survival of cubs. The crocodile might get an easy meal of a tiger cub, but it’s well understood among the animals, that the mother would not stop until it killed the particular crocodiles that ate its cub. And tigers have been known to stalk such an animal for such a reason for days and days until in was able to kill.
