I really enjoyed Gravel at its time of release. The DLC Fire and Ice is very good too. Plays great with a pad or a wheel. Physics are very decent. It's the first game where Milestone used the Unreal Engine 4 that they use since then

A rally game that didn't sell well & was criminally overlooked is Rallisport Challenge 2 on the Xbox. I've played most rally games & that game is still my favourite. It has Rally, Super-specials, Ice Racing, Hill-Climb & Rallycross. The car physics are superb & it is 60fps. Great with a wheel. Nobody cared because it was only on xbox. It was ahead of it's time. It's was Dirt before Dirt. It's Amazing.

With a few settings tweaked in the menu, this felt like Sega Rally Revo's spiritual successor. Great game.

  • @AustinOgonoski

Great video Alan. Always thought this game was under-appreciated. Superb performance on PC, really tough AI, had above-average FFB, the dash-style cockpit cam, and a LOT of content. Tons of vehicles, locations, and tracks of all shapes and sizes. It was like DiRT 2 but with 3x the content. Like you mentioned, it lacked the marketing and production value of the Codemasters stuff which is where I think it lost out in the long run. Might have to give it another bash after work.

This is probably the most surprising game that came from Milestone! It is hands down their best game and it was extremely fun to play! All the Supercross games they made were also extremely good to!

SLRE (PC) is my fav rally game ever. It did quite well on consoles actually, especially the PS4. I really hope Milestone will make a successor to it. On PC it mostly failed because of its abysmal wheel support and Dirt Rally popping up out of nowhere at around the same time

I feel like ONRUSH from the same year Gravel was released should've done better. A racing game where you don't have laps or positions but rather team-based goals was a very interesting one. I'm in love with the game's sense of style, both in art direction and vehicle designs. It too suffered from poor marketing like GRAVEL, and its price on launch didn't help matters.
Another one would be a game from my childhood, Re-Volt. Mario Kart-esque racing but with realistic RC physics. No RC game after it ever came close. It's a shame it never got a chance at a true sequel. Thankfully there's a whole community that still hosts races and creates custom cars and tracks for it even after 20 years since its release.

Pretty much all japanese arcade racing games, sadly they've all disappeared in the first half of previous gen, nothing in the last 10 to 12 years (I would say since Initial D Extreme Stage in 2008, even if there has been a couple of RIdge Racer on 3DS/Vita since), no Sega Rally, Out Run, Ridge Racer, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Initial D...

Wow those rain reflections in the end looked fantastic. Sadly i was one of those people who heard ''Gravel'' and chuckled at the poor name, watched gameplay here and sort of didn't give it a 2nd thought. I think i'd buy more racing games if i had a triple screen setup like yours. I've really moved towards VR so if i want to rally/race i go to the usual VR supported games. IIRC I only knew about this game because you guys revealed an early build in the days of the Team VVV Chats. Seeing Billy Strange's comment on V-Rally 4 reminded me, I think that was the same story. These games were so much more fun with a FFB wheel, and I don't think I would have spent so much time with them otherwise.
A game I'd love to see a remake of is any of the TOCA series. Back in the day on most Friday night's we'd drag around CRT TV's between friends houses and have them back to back with our PlayStations linked. I'm sure we played other games using that setup, but I can only remember TOCA right now.

    • @kpegc
      @kpegc Před 5 měsíci

I salivate at the thought of a new Motorstorm with a cockpit view and full wheel/force feedback support.
It could be set in Africa because I think that would be a good region that perfectly suits a revival for that series. It has the tropical elements of Pacific Rift, the terrain of Monument Valley, the variable climate of Apocalypse; I think it even features some mountainous regions similar to Arctic Edge's setting as well. An African setting would be the franchise's best and most commanding way of saying, "We're back".
Furthermore, any sort of off-road oriented vehicle would be totally fit for that region. The setting would simultaneously lend itself well to gameplay variety; and be just as immersive, fun, and plausible as those in the past games.
A new MotorStorm set in Africa with modern technology just sells itself in my opinion. I think it would provide Sony with a game that gives Forza Horizon some genuine competition.

I like the code masters series but some variety would be great. I'd love to see the Toca series on current / next gen too. V-Rally 4 and Gravel look good on the surface, until you try to drive the cars the way a rally car should be driven.
Both games suffer from weird tyre models where there's basically no claw grip. Once you start drifting, the wheels just speed up without any resistance and the car feels like it's driving on ice. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure we'd have two very good competitors to the DiRT series.
IIRC, a friend has told me this had to do with the use of PhysX where if a fix isn't applied, wheel speeds go crazy when sliding.
Gravel also has some weird issues with fast bumps on the road, sometimes you or the AI just get kicked up in the air for no apparent reason...

Rock and Roll Racing (Sega Genesis) such a fun game and SOUNDTRACK. I don't understand why Codemaster's F1 series have to have such a generic and dull music (I remember F1 2000 having Placebo's "Every me and every you" song, Gran Turismo 2 & 4 with that jazz music vibe or Nascar series from 2000 to 2006, amazing soundtracks).
I agree, SLRE was a miss oportunity...but I will keep those stages with me.
Watching this video, I'm thinking if I should give it a try to Gravel, V-Rally 4 or WRC 8 now that are on sale 70% off or if I should wait to WRC 9 or Project Cars 3 to be released.. (I'm more of the SIM side of the moon, but lately I've been enjoying NFS Heat a lot).

This game looks absolutely amazing. The tight circuits I wasn't feeling. But then when it opened out, into long stretches and you could see the course and how to tackle it, that's something kinda unique.
Reminds me of a game called Big Red Racing. czcams.com/video/94nbLl95unw/video.html
The motocross circuits would be a good idea too, if terrain deformation was more apparent. And affected handling and the lines.

I bought Gravel on release and got my moneys worth out of it, I felt like it had a lot of potential and it is a waste of talent judging by how poorly the game did in terms of sales. The online system was very basic also which I felt killed the whole online userbase of the game. For example you couldn't see lobbies that were in the middle of an ongoing race, so even though there couldve been loads of lobbies, if they were active in a race it would give the impression that no one was playing online which I believe created the domino effect of killing the online userbase. I do wonder what happens to all of these assets that were handcrafted just to be abandoned after one game since I thought the car models and sounds were spot on, the name "Gravel" certainly didn't generate excitement either. That would be the equivalent of calling Hydro Thunder "boats" or "water" lol. I still play this game from time to time online with a few of my mates, as its a great laugh.

Nice video, maybe a Dakar 18 retrospective too?

Devs never fixed the flickering input problems, they just said unplug every USB device and you should be fine suggesting they had no idea how to fix a problem other games didn’t have so when they walked away from the problem I walked my wallet away from these devs.

Yeah, budget got pulled on this game, dead on arrival. Shame, potential was there.
