- The 2 great legends team up on SNL in 1979, with some help from Joey Arias, and perform Bowie's Man Who Sold The World. Simply sublime and otherworldly. And as an extra added bonus: Bowie-Hoisting.

I worked event security at a concert in LA when David Bowie was touring with Klaus Nomi. Before the show there were a lot of people standing around talking and wanting to get to David Bowie. But, in all the frenzy, I watched Klaus step back, look around and began to talk to the staff that was working there. The caterers, the stage hands, and even me. I found him to be one of the most engaging interesting people to talk to. He was a warm, humble and openly friendly person. He was a very approachable and nice person and I have always remembered him and his friendliness to me and my co-workers with great fondness.
WootTootZoot Oh man, that sounds incredible. Is here anything else you recall from that era?
WootTootZoot Oh man, that sounds incredible. Is here anything else you recall from that era?
I’ve heard very little about Klaus... but it’s always this. He’s a secret treasure.
I was a 12 year old odd ball of a tomboy and me and my sis snuck (sp!) down to the basement to watch SNL on this airing. My life changed even before David Bowie finished his performance! I had finally found where I fit in! I'm 53 years old and I have been a hard-wired , die-hard, obsessed in all things Bowie fan since. It took till the internet to find this rare footage. And I learned that was Klaus Nomi, and so I started listening to him and remember the articles of when David Bowie approached him to do this. That was his style Bowie liked with the suit. Klaus has an almost ethereal voice that was of no other. Oh! If I was to have one wish and that would to go back in time of the early 70's and be apart of that whole New York City scene would be just electric! By the time I had learned about Klaus Nomi was too late. Sadly one of the first performers to die of AIDS and even more tragic not giving enough exposure for more to enjoy. So I am like the rest of these good folks saying "Tell me more" WootTootZoot!!!!! Cant leave us hanging!!!
@Ossarian "I'm random asshole with nothing better to do, wishing you a shitty night" -tv fades off-
And today, I learned who Klaus Nomi is. Down this rabbit hole I go.
I hope you watched a few of his operatic videos. That was one very strange and unique German boy 🤭😀🤭
Damn right ! Total eclipse.
Klaus Nomi était un ancien chanteur d'un Opéra de l'Allemagne de l'est. D'où sa voix si particulière et que j'aimais tant........
The Nomi Song will stay with you forever while You don't own me will rock your heart away. Just a few pointers whilst taking that Journey. I'm also in said hole. 😆
Wish more people would give recognition to Joey Arias, the amazingly talented singer in red, that was best friends with Klaus Nomi. The 2 met Bowie at a dinner event and found out he was a big fan of the both of them as well. This ended up being their only collaboration although they wanted to do more. Joey Arias is still alive and does great shows to this day. He’s such a talent.
That is great to know. I will check his videos. On Vimeo someone said. Thanks.
Fuk, ain't that something... Thier ONLY time together?
Joey Arias was in The Groundlings where he knew Cassandra Peterson. He shows up in the Elvira movie as a creepy hitchhiker.
Yes, totally agree. His solo stage act is compelling.
David Bowie et Klaus Nomi : ça leur ressemble tellement, sans oublier l'époque et la chute du mur de Berlin !!!!!!!!!!!!
Joey Arias & Klaus Nomi were exactly WHAT SOLD this Man Who Sold the Word performance.
Wonder if Kurt Cobain saw and was inspired by this performance?
@@thomasturner8064 FYI David Bowie hired both of them, gave them a few thousand dollars for outfits for this song. He said he was going to be dressed up 'Bauhaus'. They went to Henri Bendel and found the red and/or black Thierry Mugler outfits with leggings for $100 each.
@@lowe-quay-shush They did a great job on this and TVC15 from the same show. I heard that Bowie had only very recently met them in NYC.
I love love love David Bowie but I am especially happy that Klaus Nomi is being acknowledged here in the comments! He led kind of a sad life and was so talented.
Soooo true. Just an over-the-top talent, just a thing of wonderment. And: he was a very accomplished chef, to boot! Thanks for your insightful comment.
This is a charisma overload right here.
@Theonlyonestanding It was worse than Ebola. Ebola was scary but virtually no one ever caught it. AIDS was in every neighborhood and people were terrified of it.
@Theonlyonestanding Are you stupid or do you just want to admit you don't know what the word virtually means
who?
Man, Klaus' counter tenor range really adds that extra sparkle to this song.
And Joey Arias too!
Klaus and Joey certainly add a bunch to this version, but I also want to point out how the lack of distortion on Bowie's voice in this version really adds something as well. Rest in Peace, Klaus and David.
This Version is like if the song was written for "Heroes" or "Lodger".. I love it
Klaus takes this song to another level with that insane soprano [edit: apparently it’s countertenor for men]
Not soprano (women singers), but countertenor.
Fernando Graça ooo thank you for the correction! Always down to learn something new
All these years I thought it was falsetto
Klaus nomi is mezze soprano
@ he's mezze suprano
Oh. My. God. I saw this live in 79. My mind was blown then, still is.
macleggett same here!
Same here. Frankfurt Germany and I was 16. This experience has had a lasting effect on my life.
If your mind has been blown twice man you're on borrowed time LOL
SAME. It's how I found out about all those "Do you Nomi?" posters in NY.
It was a compelling moment for many - my parents were put off but we kids were OMG this is incredible.
Klaus needs to have more recognition. A box set would be nice.
Just 2 albums and some songs, and they are hard to find and very expensive
You know what else would be nice? If some *sshole hadn't come along and hacked up this performance with a pile of unnecessary clips.
👏👏👏👏👏👏🥇👍🤗Thanks, Thanks, Thanks 😊 You Are Rigth 1000%.
Klaus Nomi was one of the most gifted and talented vocalist. I feel his background vocals here actually eclipsed alot of what Bowie was serving in that moment.
I don’t think there’s enough material for a boxset. But I get what you mean. He’s amazing.
Joey Arias has done it all.
Singer, comedienne, actor, Cirque du Soleil performer, Drag Queen and a fantastic jazz singer and LGBT pioneer!
From hanging around Madonna Like A Virgin era - to this iconic moment!
He has seen them all come and go!
We need a Joey Arias documentary asap
I read this in Stefan’s (SNL) voice…
not to mention our early 80s band STRANGE PARTY feat. Joey which shall rise again, watch for UK album release by summer '24! look up song IMITATORS
At 50 yo I just learned about Klaus Nomi.
Better late than never.
Makes you wonder at the beautiful pebbles on the beach that we will never view or be able to enjoy. Life is definitely far too short for experiencing all that can or should be. I recall seeing this when it was live - but I was far too young in my 20’s to understand what I was experiencing.
At age 61, here.
I can't believe Davie bowie beat up Klaus and stole his suit.
I recommend you to watch the documentary "The Nomi Song". It's very interesting how Klaus Nomi got the tuxido. czcams.com/video/NySeTvdNtEw/video.html
Thé man who steal and wear Nominé clothes 🤔
beat his a$$
@@dietmarhoerner9076 Thanks man!
Lol!
This was impossible to get on CZcams for ages
I know! I am so happy it is back! The back up vocals are what make it so great in my opinion.
@@anmnou yeah klaus nomi makes any song great with his unique voice
Dragonheart agree! i remember seeing this when it was first televised and just being so mesmerized with nomi
It wasn't easy! But I used subterfuge and determination. What an iconic performance.
Update. Happened upon treasure. I hoovered up (mp4-wise) a pure clip of this. I posted it here: vimeo.com/338752805 Will put it up here on YT soon.
Singing back up is not only the fabulous Klaus Nomi (mentioned in the comments) but also the incomparable Joey Arias (in orange suit). Another amazing performer that has an incredible falsetto voice and sings torch songs. Incredibly talented people!!😊
.....i photographed him and interviewed him....he was truly amazing...we did a red carpet event for VH1....at the legendary gay bar...THE STUD....i was on the red carpet with him...he looked AMAZING...he suspended reality....he also sang to me over the phone...a Billie Holliday song....while he was actually staying in the legendary room she was busted in here in San Francisco....she beat the case....he was very kind and told me about this performance on SNL....the story is Klaus was actually a substitute for....TONI BASIL....who was busy working with BETTE MIDLER at the time.....genius.....

I remember being a 10 year old kid and watching this live on SNL. It blew me away and made me fall in love with Bowie and Klaus instantly.💖
Same for me.
@@willkay7206 and I.
Yup
RIP David Bowie and Klaus Nomi
Klaus Nomi was amazing. So sad he passed way too early. I can’t imagine what his influence on music would have been in the last 20 years.
I am à great one for the German ignored Nomi who went to the US with no notions of music, within 4 years he died of AIDS but composed révolutionary albums I still listen to in tears... Bowie was right to help him get through, my English is bad but genuine, no translàtor
Seeing Klaus Nomi appears suddenly, is such a classy shocker always
I’m addicted. Klaus is like a drug. Discovered him today and I’m completely mesmerized by him. This is incredible.
We are 2
I was thinking today how much better music was in the 80s because of USSR 'The Wall' , Reagan w -MoralMajority- and the influence of Mutual Assured Destruction on art, in general.
Mysterious and haunting. My favorite version of the song, by far. Nomi makes it even better, he should have collaborated more with Bowie
Very well said. I find it simply transporting and otherworldly; Nomi sends it into a whole new dimension. David is in immaculate form. Really just kinda perfection here on earth. Thank you for your comment.
Ashur Darkstarr could you imagine a song with Klaus and Freddie Mercury?
Itbmurr1 They play weekends in Asgaard, Valhalla and Nebuchadnezar’s Palace on the beach in Santorini
@@cfrandre8319 Occasionally Tuesdays, after lunch, in Absorto, Chari-Baguirmi, Chad, let us not forget.
And, Bowie promised to be I"in touch" with Nomi for future projects/tours. Bowie never did. A shame for all of us.
Given all the reasons the Internet sucks, it is redeemed when you stumble onto something like this. Not only is this a terrific performance of a Bowie classic, but it also introduced me to Joey and Klaus. I’ve just spent an hour deep-diving on them and now I have a warm glow about humanity.
And Joey Arias!
I always come back to this version whenever I want to hear this song.
Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias's harmonies are like having my brain sensually massaged.
Merci pour Klaus Nomi
Merci pour lui
Klaus Nomi KILLING THE HIGH NOTES
Klaus Nomi is so deliciously avant-garde.
Saw this as a child. Will never forget it. RIP gentlemen.
I learned who Klaus Nomi was today . Such a beautiful unique individual
This version is so great because of how much Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias added to it. Near the end Klaus belts out vocals so powerful they could’ve overtaken Bowie if he wanted to but he did just enough to elevate the song. And Bowie does his best to keep up with both of them and it makes his performance all the more better for it. It’s probably my favorite version of the song.
A perfectly restrained performance.
A perfect example of how they serve the song. Even with such skill and proficiency, these 3 artists, along with the backing band, keep their parts of the performance in check, to ensure each element of the song is present.
I like your comment, but David didn’t didn’t have to try and keep up with anyone, ever... he had a gorgeous voice✨
What a great opportunity for them all to work together. I agree that this version is the best I have never seen it.. thanks for this..... Klaus is under rated and you appreciated him after he died and bowie was as eccentric as him but more excepted... in main stream
Bowie isn't attempting to keep up with anybody. He is simply performing the song as Bowie does.
This was one of the greatest live performances on SNL hands down!
This blew me away when I saw it as a kid. I was hooked.
👏👏👏Iconic! With Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias!
The world misses you david
And Klaus.
Another fine example of Bowie surrounding himself with others unique talents - the true genius of Bowie.
Yeah, because he was utterly useless himself blah blah blah!
Superior ... I hope my YT Bowie songs makes him smile from far far away ... superfans unite.
Arias and Nomi's backup vocals are great! 🤩
The various clips of Bowie are just haunting. What a bright and expressive life.
I saw this as a lad live in 79.
Love Bowie, of course, but I've never forgotten Nomi, and I think that's important, too.
Stunning. I saw this when it was on SNL. It was scary and spectacular at the same time.
Brave, at the same time..
Klaus Nomi's voice is great!
I love this video for like 40 years. Klaus
My wife recorded very many SNL episodes when they were rerun. And this episode is one of them. This is definitely a keeper. Miss him very much. RIP DAVID. 💔
Amazing to see Klaus Nomi, Joey Arias and David Bowie together, such amazing voices and sadly the world is a poorer place without them. May their music live on, I feel so lucky to be around during their time.
This never gets old. This is art. take note kids. 🥀
This Bowie performance changed us all forever.
It’s changed your, your didn’t provide any evidence that it changed the vast majority of the rest of the world.
Bowie and Nomi together....nothing else comes close....wonderful simply wonderful. 💜
2 perfect aliens found each other
Superior ... I hope my YT Bowie songs makes him smile from far far away ... superfans unite.
THIS IS W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L, DAVID BOWIE AND KLAUS NOMI PERFORMING TOGETHER ! ! ! AN A-W-E-S-O-M-E COMBINATION ! ! !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I remember seeing this on Saturday night live back in the seventies as a child. What an impression it made! Klaus Nomi is an artist in his own right
What kind of dream SNL was this?! 😮
Not only was he a genius with lyrics that kept you guessing sometimes but the visuals were Beyond anybody else is thinking
Fashion, creativeness and the brilliance of Mr.David Bowie
First time I've heard this version. It's fricking brilliant.
Bowie + Nomi = perfect
Plus Arias!
THREE great men . .... Joey Arias in red .
NICE call!
Well done. BTW, Joey Arias has a Vimeo channel, and the pure performance-only version is included. He seems to have very few vids up, so finding should be pretty easy. Cheers!
Thank you, I didn't know who he was.
Joey is totally under rated... usually regarded as Nomi's side kick. He had vision as well!
I saw this when it was first on. He was an innovator I miss Bowie alot. This was for The Lodger release he did Boys keep swinging too.
AWESOME!
BEAUTIFUL!
DAVID BOWIE A LIVING LEGEND.
WITH KLAUS NOMI THE COOLEST!!!
Hard to believe this was only 3 years ago. Rip David Bowie
This is how it is done. Bowie and Nomi. A masterclass. 😢
Been looking for this video for ages now, finally found it, definitely the best version I've heard .Klaus's vocals add an other worldly edge to it. RIP Klaus and David
Yeah, spot-on with regard to KN. Update: was able to find and predate upon an mp4 file of straight performance. I put it here for now: vimeo.com/338752805 But will put it on YT soon.
Here is the unadulterated performance here on YT: czcams.com/video/B0T3ZMCciNo/video.html
YT link I sent will not lift the spirits, I suspect. Vid immediately banished.
But Vimeo link still good!!!!!!! (for the moment...)
why would someone do this to the original video?
This is my all-time favorite song from him, and I am strangely attracted to this particular version almost every time I wish to hear it...it's got an extra haunting quality to it, and I love the rawness of the live performance...when the measure of your artistry was still how well you can carry your album to the stage without lipsync or autotune.
Klaus was wonderful. I adored him
Long live the freaks!
Thank you for upload this great video, Bowie and Nomi together are fabulous, greetings from Mexico!!
You are sooo welcome!
To see this now is like to listen to Mozart . R.i.p David ,Klaus. Always
Epic! Bowie with Klaus Nomi
Joey, Klaus and Bowie. I'd love to hear some more from that trio.
I remember watching this SNL episode. The music scene in NY hasn't been the same since the '70's.
True. It was a little before my time to have participated in it but I appreciate it so much. Much more interesting things/creativity/pushing the boundaries going on and individualism was more prevalent. It seems to have been curbed in recent times.
But this was the beginning of the 80ies!
It's beautiful to imagine David Bowie and Klaus Nomi singing right now up high in the stars...
I found this video on Joe Dallesandro's page a long time ago. After that, I read everything I could about Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias. Klaus Nomi's videos are haunting. His voice is unusual and operatic. His outfits are out of this world. He was truly one of a kind and there has been none like him since. It was a great adventure learning about both of them. This video, above, started it all for me. Their only time with Bowie. I had hoped there would be more. But this was it.
Pure alien art. Rest in stars.❤
Just superb. Two maestros for the price of one: Bowie & Nomi.
So sad we losed such a beautiful icon such as David Bowie
And Prince and Michael Jackson and Linda Ronstadt can’t sing anymore...
no one can stop it , you know....
unbelievable...both together???you lucky Americans!!!
Wow I didn’t thought this song could be more beautiful but then I see this ❤️🙏🏻
What a wonderful artists
Klaus did the show!
One and only... Bowie. Such an Artist. Miss you :(
@really dude ;)
So much talent in this video ❤
Ever wanna feel old
Watch this and remember watching it live.
Man I’m glad I’m OLD
A legendary performance. It's a shame that Klaus Nomi had to die this young.
Indeed one of my favourite versions of The Man Who Sold the World
I’ve never seen this before - thank you so much!
What a masterwork this video is.
When I was growing up in Uk in 70s 80s 90s we couldn’t get to see Tv appearances like this which were originally on USA TV . Thank God for CZcams , we can now get to see what we missed .
I remember watching this when it aired ❤️ Bowie was brilliant and he's timeless. Thank you for posting this ♥️

what a blessing to see this, they are so amazing
That's the word, or one of them. Mesmerizing, otherworldly.....thanks for chiming in, much appreciated!

David Bowie - the Man Who Conquered the World
I am glad we have atleast one song with Klaus and David together
full version finally! i remember watching this live...and being mesmerized and transfixed. still am to this day
I love the internet for gems like this
Klause died in 1983! OMG, that is 40 years ago .... wow! I love this rendition, love it and these talented men. RIP David and Klaus
This is one of the best Bowie video montage I’ve ever seen RIP David and Klaus ❤️
Been searching for even bits and pieces of this great performance of Bowie and Nomi..pretty much non existent...thank you for this...if I die tonight I will die happy.. ❤
It *is* that powerful, I completely agree. But I'd advise skipping the dying part. You seem nice.
@@TheWilliambrew I plan on not dying for a very long time ....just saying if it did happen I can say I saw this lol...and thanks :)
Yeah, kidding...I hope you do indeed live a long, fulfilling life. Cheers. Heck. I could die happy right this very moment, for that matter......
Superior ... I hope my YT Bowie songs makes him smile from far far away ... superfans unite.
Ufff es la mejor versión de esta locura ❤
Can't believe I saw this when it 1st aired on SNL!!!
i wanted to thank you for putting this up. Having been a fan since about 1972, i remember seeing this on SNL when it aired, and my wife and i were about in tears in the perfection of this performance. i didn't know anything about Klaus Nomi then, and years later my kids told me some stories. i am heartbroken still at Mr. Jones' passing. Heartbroken still. That doesn't seem to be going away.
You're very welcome. And yeah; still hurts.
Superior ... I hope my YT Bowie songs makes him smile from far far away ... superfans unite.
like other folks commenting, I remember watching this on SNL, I was 16 and I remember sitting there with my mouth hanging open, in awe, first heard Bowie in '76 - the David Live album, but this performance was different, dont even have the words to this day, but I remember how it struck me
Your lucky Klaus wasn’t walking about your living room with his penis hanging out of his trousers …time to shut your mouth..
My favorite performance of this song by our beloved friend David, soulful Arias, Bowie & Nomi. I feel the electricity every time I listen. May this echo forever and ever!!!
❤️🤍🖤
klaus, si tuviera que catalogar como aporta a este video o a David....es una maravilla.....descansa en paz...te amos todavía Klaus.
KLAUS!!!!! Brilliant man with such a beautiful voice. You are missed!
I remember watching this as a kid... it was a pivotal moment in my life...when I first understand that I wasn’t alone in the world, and I had found my king
Obviously this isn't my real account but i just want to say.. what a brilliant comment 🎵🎶👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏻
Imagine being 13 years old...hearing SNL is funny. Sneaking out to turn on the TV after everyone has gone to sleep and seeing this performance......mind BLOWN...!!!!
Bowie + Klaus Nomi!!! Wonderful version, great performance! Thanks for sharing this!!!
