- Oh my gosh! You never know what you'll see when you get back into the Louisiana backroads.
If you’ve ever been to Louisiana, you probably went to New Orleans, got drunk, got back on your plane and left. If you did that, you missed out on a whole lotta stuff.
When I first got to Louisiana, of course I did that New Orleans thing. But only for a couple days. Then, I took off and headed up through cajun country, into the woods, over the river, past all the farmland and Shreveport and into Arkansas. The whole trip took 5 days.
And boy did I see a lot. And they sure were nice days for Louisiana backroadin. Partly cloudy and 75 degrees in the springtime.

Me too! Raised in Lafayette and went to high school in Lake Charles… college in Ruston. I married a military man, and live in Nebraska now, but miss Louisiana every day. Those damn hurricanes… The only reason we can’t go back. Nicest people in the world.

A 6 piece crawfish had me dying 🤣🤣. One thing I’ll add, you said, they put more emphasis on hunting and fishing than education… education is a broad term. You need to be taught the things it takes to thrive in your environment, we might not do so well in a big city, but on the water we survive on things that some pay $35 a plate to eat in a fancy restaurant.

It really bothers me that Nick said people in Louisiana pay more attention to hunting fishing and not on education. Shame on you Nick. Hunting and fishing is in our blood. Education is extremely important to us. As far low income families and drug abuse another shame on you. Tell me something where do you live. I guess no poor families (your words not mine) in your city, no drug abuse and heaven forbid no prisons.

Absolutely LOVE Louisiana! The food, people, culture, history. Friendliest people in the US. Only one thing comes to mind that’s not good is the roads. Worse roads of any state I have been to.

@@innotechI lived in Lake Charles, LA for 3 years in the early 80’s. I worked for a popular guy, who had a couple of popular restaurants, I was shocked when visiting the homes of some of my coworkers, their families were rich!! People acted the same, money or not. But that was a long time ago. 🤔

I love ppl like the guy in his truck. So friendly and loves to talk. Never do I meet ppl like this in California. Nobody talks to anyone not even in my apartment complex. It’s sad.
My son lives in New Orleans. First time I went down there from my home state of Washington, I was amazed at how friendly he people were, no matter if they were black or white, just nice people, so different from Washington State.
It’s the people that make Louisiana a special state.
We really all do love each other down here❤

Slovenia is where the word slave comes from. Africa was and is the capital of slavery. I'm sure you heard the Egyptians had their slaves build the pyramids. To this day there is still mass slavery in Africa.

One thing I learned from working in south Louisiana. If you see people that wear little white boots evacuate for a hurricane. Run for your life and don't stop until you pass up Forest Gump because it's gonna be bad.

I am a trucker. I ve been everywhere. Louisiana, especially its back country, for some reason is one of my favourite places in the country. Something special about it. It took me some years to realise that. I live in South Florida myself.
Nick, I grew up in the North Louisiana region--Shreveport, Grand Bayou, and Nachitoches. I've lived in Louisville, Ky now for 25 years. It was great to see the familiar places and gas station food that I tell people about. Meat pies are the BEST!

I've been watching your videos for a few years. Used to watch mainly because you would cover subjects I was searching on. I wasn't always sure about you, but you have really developed your channel, and your style, and you do a good job of getting down to the truth of these areas. Very well done Nick. It's nice to hear from good people in a world that looks not so good sometimes. Also the lumber mills in Canada have been closing down sense the 90's(from the East coast to the West coast). It's been bad for small towns that depended on that one or two saw mills for work. Building is still happening so all the lumber is coming from somewhere.
Trump put a tax on Canadian lumber coming to the U.S. also

Frog legs are too damn expensive to put in a meat pie. Meat pies use beef. Frog legs are fried. Plus the meat is totally different. You'd very much be able to tell.

My wife and I enjoyed mint juleps and fried alligator at Bon Sejour Plantation. Lots of cool stuff in New Orleans also. If all you do is get drunk you missed it.
On my first trip to Louisiana, my dad and I drove south from NW Arkansas to Shreveport, then kept going to the Gulf and stopped at a few wildlife sanctuaries, plantations, state parks for swamp kayaking, and random sea food joints along the road. Dad got nervous in places where there's a road but mostly water around you, but I love those areas. We camped on the most mosquito-infected coast we've stayed at (Grand Isle?). But it was fun. Thankful it was March. On the way back north we stayed on the east side and cut through Arkansas through Monticello and Pinebluff. Outside of Monticello had the BEST fried chicken at an unbranded gas station, lol.
I love NW Ark- Lived there for 10 years in the '90's. That trip is fun. I have taken those roads too. Monticello is still my half-way point between BTR and NW Ark (Used to be Pine Bluff but no more). I live in Baton Rouge.

There are places where people live so far up rivers on houses on stilts over a swamp. They have boats to get around because there are no roads and there is even a guy with a pontoon boat loaded with barrels who provides trash collection. It is a different life in Louisiana.

I was born/raised in Lousiana. The people are geniune, hardworking and just flat out good people.
Depending on where you go in Louisiana it can seem like a different state or even country. I've lived in the Shreveport-Bossier area for decades, recently moved to East Texas.
Shreveport has become very dangerous.
Ive lived in Longview for 45 years. Shreveport has always been dangerous.

Yeah, in the 80s Shreveport wasn't great but it's a different kind of dangerous for the last 20 or so years.
Last time I was in Shreveport was in the early eighties, I don’t remember being scared, but we were young and we all drank. We moved from Detroit to Lake Charles and people offered us alcohol everywhere we went!! 💕

In my experiences in Louisiana here is how I rate it. Great people, great food and great fishing. For you hunters out there.....Great hunting as well.....from what the great people have told me.
My sister had and has a Mexican Imports pottery business down here in South Texas and a few years ago she asked me if I could deliver some merchandise for a few clients she had and has up in Louisiana to their businesses, I had only driven and or ride along while going thru rural Louisiana , that time I decided to goof around I'm some of my numerous trips I took to Louisiana and found out how awesome and beautiful,not only how beautiful the whole rural cities in the State are but it's awesome how friendly and beautiful it's people are , I spent about a couple of months driving thru out Louisiana, and in my lifetime,I'm 52 , actually turning 53 tomorrow, like I said , I was a roadie for a whole bunch of bands and artists thru out the 80 s, 90s and early 2000s and I'm my likings , Louisiana is simply beautiful and it's people are simply awesome !! ✌🏻👽🍄💚😚💨💨💨💨💚🍄👽✌🏻

I did spend some time in New Orleans but we traveled to New Iberia because my husband and I loved James Lee Burke stories that are set there. We drove around some, and visited a walk through swamp.

We were down and toured mostly rural areas, old plantation houses and battle of New Orleans site to figure out just how you guys managed to win one (😉). Met a couple of farmers and pretty well instantly knew we had so much in common. One family came up to visit us back. I would call them severely normal people. Like Alberta USED to be.

Beef and curry chicken are the two main ones you get in the islands. They call them patties as opposed to pies. Had plenty of those when I lived in the Bahamas. (Hot patties)
We actually have a lot of Caribbean culture down here…kind of a melting pot. Beans and rice is huge down here too

I just spent 2 weeks doing a southern states tour. The people there are so nice. They greet ya a lot. Not shy to talk to ya. Nothing like here in Washington state. I'm originally from Virginia and miss the southern hospitality.

I loved this video of Louisiana that you posted.. I love Louisiana. However only got to go there once during Mardi gras. But I had a chance to tour around a little bit. I love the plantations and the trees. Just a laid-back country feeling!

Actually, we have a lot of people hunt and fish in North Carolina, at least where i live. They hunt the deer and rabbits. And I think I'll pass on the crawfish. I went to Louisiana 20 years ago to visit my brother while he was stationed at Ft. Polk befor he went to Iraq and watched him eat a whole big plate of crawfish. I have a picture of it too. It was a nice trip though.

In the South gas station food can be pretty darn good
in a gas station here you often find Greek and Lebanese restaurants too because many station owners are middle eastern. We also have a great chain called Grab n Geaux that has smokehouse in the back with legit barbecue brisket and pulled pork

That was a great video , I especially liked the gentleman who filled us in on the timber industry. So much of America has lost its markets. I think it would still be worth a trip to explore , every one has to live as they wish, the people seemed very friendly.
I love hearing about how people live. What industry is prospering and the pollution issues. I have used these videos to ask hood questions in my plan to sell my FL home to buy in in NC .

Enjoyed this video. I grew up on the Westbank area of New Orleans, the bayous of Barataria and Lafitte. Still have lots of relatives there. I moved out west 20 years ago, before Katrina. I like the warmth without the humidity. Hearing the Cajun accent in your interviews with the locals was very familiar. I've lost my accent, mostly, but my students can hear it occasionally.
I lived right there too 93-95. I was stationed in the Air Force Base and had a apartment nearby. Good times.

Love your videos. And especially this one being from south Louisiana. You show a different side of life that they don't show on TV. The common thread of people saying drugs are a problem is true in my eyes. So many people from my hometown have wasted their life away with drugs. And it's not just Louisiana, it's small town America and it's really a problem that needs to be addressed.
Are they hooked on fentanyl and/or worse?
@@amazingdany it's mostly meth and fetanyl now. But it started 20 years ago with pain pills just like so many other parts of the country. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorists but it's affecting such a large amount of people it feels like a form of chemical warfare being waged and the government is just letting it happen, or even complicit.
Nick I keep telling folks to watch your videos so they can see how other cities are.
Like what's happening in California and Washington. Georgia and other places.

Nick I’ve been watching your videos for years. I’m from Shreveport and have lived in California since 2005 when I joined the Marines. Shreveport holds a place in my heart though it’s a tragedy to go home and see the city turn into what it has. You didn’t show much about Shreveports downtown with all the casinos and riverboats. Hi Nick! I watched this video yesterday but was on the move so didn't have a chance to comment. This is a great video and really gives some background on the people you meet when you really go beyond the main streets. I know their life is not what everyone, or even myself would enjoy but to see them continuing their lifestyles from generations ago is really uplifting.
I know when I click on your videos I will always be entertained and might even learn something.

At about 10:35 I couldn't help but notice all the tiny frogs jumping in the parking lot. Very lovely.
Born and raised in the bayous of S La but left for NC after Hurricane Katrina and never looked back. I’d say your video was an accurate portrayal of life there. It’s an interesting place to visit but you don’t want to live there.
I’m tired of the hurricanes too, want to move, but don’t know where to go…scared I’ll miss it honestly
