I don't know about that.......of course you did have two HUGE egos trying to engage with each other in the moment, but I didn't necessarily get the feeling that Cosby was trying to "upstage" him (or vice-versa). Seems like they both were just trying to find a 'rhythm', or something they could both latch onto to have some fun with.....and, for whatever reason, it just didn't work.
I DO agree with you that the end result was "painful", though.....or at the very least, just NOT that entertaining. But, it happens, and there's nothing you can do but move on....

I agree with you completely. Cosby overdid it on the grading of the book. Even when Cosby asked Jerry to sing the song, he had his head down. It just goes to show you, Johnny makes it look easy. Lots of people tried guest hosting the show but many of them say how difficult it is. The problem is interviewing the guests. Johnny is great with comics as he plays straight man a let's them shine with their material. Then when he has an actor or a serious guest on the show, he's very cordial and makes them relax. That takes talent. I love Merv Griffin and Dick Cavett but they can't compare to Carson. Griffin was a nice guy but he kept talking over the comic's punchlines and interrupting. Cavett had a good show with very interesting guests but again, he's a nice guy but once you're use to Johnny, the rest are all 2nd best.

He was a damn good entertainer, because I truly do love his sense of humor. I've never seen a show of Jerry's. Just remember though, because they are apart, they don't need to fit the molds they were once in. Dean also wasn't a vocally trained singer and I don't think he pursued it like let's say Frank did.
